P urpose of C&RL News College & Research Libraries News is the official news m agazine of the Association of College & Re­ search Libraries, a division of the American Li­ brary Association. Its purpose is to record signifi­ cant activities of ACRL and to report news about academ ic and research libraries. As the official ACRL news m agazine, C& RL News m aintains a record of selected actions and policy statements of the Association and publishes timely reports on the activities of ACRL and its sections, committees, discussion groups, councils, task forces, and chap­ ters. As a vehicle for communication among college and research libraries, C& RL News reports news items pertinent to academic and research librari­ anship, including inform ation on bibliographic in­ struction, continuing education, appointm ents, acquisition of special collections, grants to li­ braries, new technology, and publications (brief notices). The editor bears responsibility for the contents of each issue of C& RL News. Materials selected by the editor m ust be new sw orthy, tim ely, and of practical value to people in the field. The editor has authority to decide w hat m aterial is appropriate for publication, based on the following guidelines. The editor also reserves the right to make appropri­ ate revisions in m aterial selected for publication in order to standardize style or improve clarity (ex­ cept official ACRL documents, president’s letters, and similar m aterial). Form al, theoretical, or research-oriented arti­ cles in ap p ro p riate for C & RL N ew s will be for­ w arded to the editor of College & Research L i­ braries for review. I. Length Articles and columns should be no more than 3,000 words and no less th an 500 words. II. Style C& RL News style is inform al, bu t informative and accurate. III. Content Materials selected should fall into one of the fol­ lowing categories: a. Reports on a project, program , or research un­ derw ay or recently completed dealing w ith a topic re le v an t to academ ic lib ra ria n sh ip . Footnotes should be minim al and charts or tables avoided. These reports may be prelim inary descriptions of programs or research to be published form ally at a later date in library literature (e.g., “Docum ent Delivery Service,” December 1986). b . Reports on a recent conference or workshop of interest to academic or research librarians (e.g., “The Off-Campus Library Services Conference,” January 1987). c. Reasoned and inform ed speculation or com- January 1987 / 29 m ent on a relevant topic, especially if solicited by the editor or an official ACRL group (e.g., “Igno­ rance Was O ur Excuse,” O ctober 1986). d. Manuscript A u th o rs sh o u ld su b m it tw o copies, d o u b le ­ spaced, following either the Chicago M anual of Style or T urabian. The preferred typew riter elements are: Courier 10, Prestige Elite 12, or L etter Gothic 12. H yphenated w ord breaks should be avoided. V. Requests for Donations C& RL N ew s m ay occasionally p rin t requests for the donation of books or m aterials to libraries, es­ pecially foreign libraries, which have suffered ex­ tensive loss through fire, hurricane, or other n a tu ­ ral disaster. O ther libraries soliciting contributions for other reasons will be referred to the rates for classified advertising in C & RL News. E d ito r’s Note: These guidelines w ere adopted by the C&RL News Editorial Board at the D enver M idw inter M eeting on January 25, 1982. ■ ■ Oberlin Conference for College Librarians F ifty-three head librarians from independent liberal arts colleges m et in O berlin, Ohio, on No­ vem ber 7-8 to discuss a wide variety of common concerns ranging from autom ation, preservation, and building renovation to collection developm ent and collaborating on fundraising w ith college de­ velopm ent offices. The retreat, w hich was held in the O berlin College L ib rary , was b u ilt around person-to-person exchanges and small group dis­ cussions. Stanley Paulson, vice-president of the Associa­ tion of American Colleges, outlined some consulta­ tion services th a t his Association could support to benefit small institutions beginning search efforts. JoAn Segal, ACRL executive director, noted th a t m any of those present had been active in ACRL over the past few years, and she encouraged them all to have a stronger presence w ith in A CRL. L inda Smith, a faculty m em ber at the University of Illinois G raduate School of Inform ation Studies, won the group’s approval for a study of the p ro b ­ lems college librarians face in supporting the sci­ ence curriculum . The steering com m ittee for the conference in­ cluded W illiam A. M offett (Oberlin, shown above speaking to conferees), Willis Rridegam (Amherst), John Sheridan (Colorado College), Kathy Spencer (Franklin & Marshall), Christopher McKee (G rin­ nell), Eleanor Pinkham (Kalamazoo), Becky Pol­ lock (Reed), and R ichard W erking (Trinity). The group resolved to reconvene next year at Grinnell College, Iowa. ■ ■
