ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 4 Meeting of New England College and Research Librarians The New England College and Research Li brarians, a chapter of ACRL, convened its first meeting on November 28, 1973, at the Massa chusetts Institute of Technology, in Cam bridge. The program, on “Faculty Status for Librarians,” was pre pared by the NECRL Steering Committee: Thomas H. Cahalan, chairman; Richard A. Olsen, and Roger J. Poulin. The guidelines prepared by H ar vard’s Study Commit tee on Professional Li C. James Schmidt brary Personnel (H ar vard Library Bulletin, v.21, no.3, July 1973) were presented by Edwin E. Williams, associ ate university librarian at Harvard, and Philip E. Leinbach, associate university librarian for personnel at Harvard. C. James Schmidt, chair man of the ACRL Committee on Academic Status and director of libraries at the State Uni versity of New York at Albany, analyzed the Harvard guidelines in terms of ACRL’s policies on faculty status for academic librarians ( “Stan dards for Faculty Status for College and Uni versity Librarians” and “Joint Statement on Faculty Status of College and University Li brarians,” C R LN , September 1972). The pro gram attracted nearly 175 librarians from six New England states. ACRL’s contribution to the program is part of an increased effort of the Association of Col lege and Research Libraries to develop its chapters through participation of ACRL officers and committee chairmen in programs on issues of concern to academic librarians at the state and regional levels.
