Profiles Lawrence D owler, librarian of the Houghton Library at Harvard University and special assistant to the director of Houghton since 1985, has been appointed associate li­ brarian for public ser­ vices in th e H a rv a rd College Library. D o w ler joined th e College Library staff in 1982 as associate librar­ ian with administrative responsibilities for rare books, manuscripts and special collections and general oversight of col­ lection development. Before coming to Harvard, Dowler was acting director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and associate librarian of the Sterling Li­ brary at Yale University. He was instrumental in the planning and development of the AMC format that has become standard for machine-readable bibliographic control of manuscripts and archives, and directed the H arvard-Radcliffe M anuscript Survey and Guide Project, which covered 48 repos­ itories. Professionally active in research library forums and special collections concerns, Dowler serves on a number of collection and access-related commit­ tees at Harvard and elsewhere. In the summer of 1987 he conducted research at the University of Michigan in the uses and users of special collections as the recipient of a Mellon Fellowship. Dowler is a scholar in American history who holds a Ph.D. (1974) from the University of Mary­ land. J ames F. W illiams II, associate director of li­ braries at Wayne State University, has been named director of libraries at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Williams began his career at Wayne State in 1968 and was appointed associate director in 1981. He has served as a member of the U.S delegation to the People’s Republic of China on Exchange of Biomedical C om m unications, Presidential a p ­ pointee to the Board of Regents of the National Li­ brary of Medicine, delegate to the Michigan White House Conference on Libraries and Information Science, and d irec to r of the K entucky-O hio- Michigan Regional Medical Library Network. People in the news Anne K. Beaubien, director of the Michigan In­ form ation Transfer Source at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, has been awarded a distin­ guished Alumna Award by the the School of Infor­ mation and Library Studies at Michigan. Beau­ bien, who received her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University, joined the library staff in 1971 as a reference librarian and bibliographic instructor. In 1980 she was chosen to head MITS, a fee-based inform ation brokerage unit of the li­ brary. Beaubien has been active in ACRL, serving on the Board of Directors, as well as on the execu­ tive board of the Michigan Chapter of the Special Libraries Association. She is a member of the Mich­ igan Online Users Group, and in 1982 was honored as “Woman of the Year” by the Ann Arbor chapter of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. Richard M. D ougherty, director of the library at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, since 1978, will step down at the end of the academic year. Pie will maintain his appointment as profes­ sor in the School of Information and Library Stud­ ies. Before coming to Michigan, where he has been instrumental in the development of MIRLYN, a campus-wide network, Dougherty was university librarian at the University of California at Berkeley 170 (1972-1978). An editor of the Journal of Academic Librarianship, Dougherty is a member of the advi­ sory board of the Library Review and is the author of numerous monographs, reports and articles. He is a member of ACRL, the Research Libraries Group, and the Association of Research Libraries. Barbara Kile, director of the Division of Gov­ ernment Documents and Special Resources at Rice University, Houston, Texas, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee for Patents and Trade­ marks of the U.S. Department of Commerce. She will serve, with the rest of the committee, until De­ cember 17 of this year. Anita Sc h il l er, reference lib ra ria n /b ib lio - grapher at the University of California, San Diego, has been elected to the California Council for the Humanities for the term 1987-1991. Schiller is the first librarian to serve on the Council, a state pro­ gram of the National Endowment for the Humani­ ties dedicated to the promotion of the humanities in California life and culture. She came to UCSD in 1970 from the University of Illinois Library Re­ search Center, and was previously visiting scholar at Rutgers University. Schiller has served as a mem­ ber of the ALA Council and received the ALA Equality Award in 1975. Roberta Stevenson, head of the Conservation and Preservation D ep artm en t at the University of C alifornia, Davis, will retire effective M arch 31. Stevenson joined the library in 1955 as a cataloger, later serving as assistant head of the Acquisitions D ep artm en t (1958-1961) and assistant head of the C atalog D ep artm en t (1961-1963). In 1963 she be­ cam e head of the Serials Division, w hich becam e a D e p a rtm e n t in 1966. She b ecam e h e a d of th e new ly-form ed Conservation and Preservation D e­ p a rtm e n t in 1981. Deaths Robert H . Becker, retired special assistant to the director of the library at the University of C ali­ fornia, Berkeley, died D ecem ber 18, 1987, after a long illness. A graduate of the University of O re­ gon, Becker earned his MLS from Berkeley in 1951 w hile w orking in the library, w here he becam e ref­ erence lib rarian specializing in W estern A m erican and L atin A m erican holdings. In 1961 he was p ro ­ m oted to assistant director, and in 1970 to associate director, a position he held until 1974, w hen he b e­ cam e special assistant to the director. Becker re ­ tired in 1979. An a u th o rity on C alifo rn ia la n d grants and m aps, he was the author of four books on various aspects of C aliforniana. Marjorie J. Benzinger, associate lib rarian and coordinator of the B ranch Libraries of the Science and E ngineering L ibrary of the State University of New York at Buffalo, died D ecem ber 21, 1987, at the age of 62. Benzinger h ad served earlier as senior reference lib rarian at the E astern Branch of the M o n m o u th C o u n ty L ib ra ry in N ew Jersey, as m athem atics lib rarian at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and as reference and serials lib ra r­ ian at the H arv ard M edical School L ibrary. She was a m em ber of Phi L am b d a Sigma and the Spe­ cial Libraries Association. Benzinger held a m as­ te r’s degree in m athem atics from the University of Chicago and an MLS from Syracuse University. Myrtle Foster, assistant circulation lib rarian at N orth Texas State U niversity, D en to n , from 1958 to 1970, died D ecem ber 24, 1987. Foster held a bachelor’s degree from the University of M inne­ sota (1922) and an MLS from Texas W om en’s U ni­ versity (1955), a n d h a d w o rk ed in M innesota, South D akota and Iow a before com ing to Texas. Richard Halvorson, user services lib rarian in the L ibrary Satellites at the University of Southern C alifornia, Los Angeles, died O ctober 11, 1987, of AIDS. He was 34. Halvorson h ad joined the USC staff in 1986 following service at the G etty Museum and Pepperdine University. He had been chair of the Professional D evelopm ent C om m ittee at USC. Marvin A. Miller, director of libraries em eritus at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, died N ovem ber 30, 1987, at 84. M iller received his b ach elo r’s degree from th e U niversity of N orth C arolina and his MLS from C olum bia University. He w orked at the New York Public L ibrary and was director of the University of New H am pshire L ibrary before being nam ed director at Arkansas in 1940. He re tire d in 1971. D u rin g his te n u re Miller organized the Special Collections Division, w hich included an Arkansas collection and the O zark Folklore Collection, and was instrum ental in the planning and design of the new Mullins L i­ brary. Miller was active in the Southwest L ibrary Association and other professional organizations and was a contributor to several professional jo u r­ nals. Everett T . Moore, associate university lib ra r­ ian em eritus of the University of C alifornia, Los Angeles, died Jan u ary 5 following a long illness. He was 78. Moore is perhaps best rem em bered as the successful plaintiff in a suit against a form er C ali­ fornia attorney general who interpreted C alifor­ n ia’s H arm ful M atter Statute to m ean th a t individ­ ual librarians could be prosecuted for distributing “harm ful m a tte r” to minors. In F ebruary 1976, the C alifornia C ourt of Appeals ruled in “Moore v. Younger” th a t C alifornia librarians w ere exempt from the H arm ful M atter Statute. His Issues o f Freedom in Am erican Libraries was published by ALA in 1964 and in 1974 he received the Robert B. Downs A w ard for his contributions to intellectual freedom. Moore served for several years on the ALA Intellectual Freedom C om m ittee, the Publications C om m ittee and the ALA Council.
