Gelfand, distin- guished research librarian for Applied Sciences and Engineering at the Univer- sity of California-Irvine, has been named fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Sci- ence (AAAS) for her con- tributions to professional societies, advancements to the study of scientific publishing and grey litera- ture, and service as a distinguished science librar- ian. Gelfand served as reference librarian at the University of Denver (1977–81), and as adjunct faculty at the University of Arizona’s SIRLS (1994— 2007) and at San Jose State University’s School of Library and Information Science (1988–95). She has been active with a number of associations, including the ACRL Board of Directors (2013–17), AAAS Secretary (2012–present), American Society of Engineering Education, California Association of Research Libraries, and the International Fed- eration of Library Associations. Appointments Lisa A. German has been appointed Univer- sity of Minnesota librarian and dean of librar- ies, effective February 28, 2020. German has more than 25 years of experi- ence in leadership of aca- demic libraries. The dean of libraries and Elizabeth D. Rockwell chair at the University of Houston Libraries since 2015, she previously served in lead- ership positions for the large research libraries at Penn State Univer- sity and the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. She publishes, presents, and is an expert consultant on topics related to library collections, management, planning, policy de- velopment, implementation, and assessment. Engaged nationally as an academic library leader, German recently led strategic plan- ning for the Greater Western Library Alliance, a consortium of 39 research libraries across the United States. She has been active in the As- sociation for Library Collections and Technical Services, has been a member of the editorial board for its peer-reviewed journal, and has served as a mentor for the Association of Re- search Libraries Leadership Fellows Program. Sydney Thompson has been named associate dean of Central Washington University Libraries. Jay Colbert has joined the University of New Hampshire Library as metadata and discovery strategy librarian. Daina Dickman has been appointed scholarly communication librarian at the California State University-Sacramento Uni- versity Library. Joanneke Elliott has been named African studies and West European studies librarian at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill University Libraries. Mary-Kate Finnegan is now science librarian at the California State University- Sacramento University Library.
