june04a.indd I n t h e Summer is finally here, and many of you are probably in the midst of preparing for ALA’s Annual Conference in Orlando at the end of the month. With ACRL sponsoring 28 programs, the conference promises to offer valuable professional development oppor tunities to meet the needs of academic and research librarians across the spectrum. If you’re not attending conference or if you’re looking for some continuing education to round out your summer, consider taking one of ACRL’s elearning seminars. Two three week, WebCTbased seminars will be offered in July and August, and ACRL will continue to partner with TLT Group to offer the online information literacy seminar series (more information on ACRL’s elearning options is available at www.acrl.org/elearning). “Suggestions for success in an ACRL online seminar,” (p. 314) provides advice on how to make the most of your time in an ACRL online seminar. If you’re considering taking an elearning seminar from ACRL, this article by the instructors of “Assessing Student Learning Outcomes “ will give you a better sense of how an online course works and the steps you can take to ensure a positive experience. This month’s Internet Resources column provides information on an array of online materials to help you at every stage of your career in librarianship. Entry to the profession, the job search and interviewing, professional news sources, and retirement are covered. “Supervising: What they didn’t teach you in library school” (p. 306), provides insight into the world of a new supervisor and how to make it work for you. Congratulations to Camila Alire, ACRL’s newly elected vice president/president elect. Information about Alire and the complete elec tion information is available on page 328. —Stephanie Orphan, Editorinchief sorphan@ala.org 302 / C&RL News  June 2004 mailto:sorphan@ala.org www.acrl.org/e-learning
