IPI environmental monitoring
Image Permanence Institute (IPI) has complet
ed field trials of its Preservation Environment
Monitor (PEM) datalogger and Climate Note
book software. Approximately 180 institutions
in the United States participated in the trials by
deploying the dataloggers and analyzing the
data collected using the software. The fi eld trial
participants’ experiences allowed IPI to refi ne
the monitoring system, which is now available
for sale, and to plan the next phase of their
research. With the support of National Endow
ment for the Humanities (NEH) funding, IPI
has begun development of three initiatives to
foster dissemination of environmental monitor
ing programs. The first initiative will be devel
opment of an IPI consultant service for those
institutions that can not conduct environmental
monitoring on their own, the second will be
creation of a “train the trainers” program for
other preservation service providers, and the
third will be establishment of advanced train
ing for participants in the fi eld trials.
