Building projects 
The Southeastern Library Network, Inc. (SO­
LINET) has published online Under Construc­
tion: Preservation and Collections Care Issues 
during Building Projects and Renovations, the 
proceedings of a preservation conference held 
at its Annual Membership Meeting in May 2003. 
This collection of presentations includes: “The 
‘Ideal’ Preservation Environment” by Michael 
Trinkley (Chicora Foundation, Inc.); “Connect­
ing the Community of Scholars: A Library Build­
ing from Planning to Reality” by Mary Molinaro 
(University of Kentucky); “Creating Today’s ARC 
Takes More Than Forty Days and Forty Nights” 
by Ann Hamilton (Georgia Southern Univer­
sity); “What Your Contractor Never Told You: 
Strategies for Protecting Your Institution during 
Construction and Renovation” by Scott Devine 
(North Carolina State University); “The Moving 
of Collections” by Alfred Lemmon (Historic New 
Orleans Collection); and “Fire Protection dur­
ing Renovations and Alterations” by Deborah 
Freeland (Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.).

California Preservation Clearinghouse 
A small group of California librarians and archi­
vists has created a Web site to act as a statewide 
clearinghouse for information about preserva­
tion. The California Preservation Clearinghouse 
(CPC) provides information about emergency 
preparedness and response, preservation edu­
cation, preservation management, collections 
maintenance, programs and workshops, consult­
ing services, the California Preservation Program 
(CPP), and the CaLibArc­Preserve discussion list. 
Although intended for Californians, the Web site 
contains material that may be of help to others, 
including a generic disaster plan workbook, a 
disaster plan template, a disaster plan exercise, 
a Web­based tutorial on the care and handling 
of books, an explanation of preserving digital 
objects, a presentation about saving family 
treasures, and much more.

CDL digital glossary 
The California Digital Library (CDL) has mount­
ed on its Web site a glossary of digital words and 
terms that covers crawling and harvesting, digital 
objects, interface customization tools, library 
and technology, linking services, metasearching, 
preservation, XML, plus terms used by CDL and 
the University of California.

Cornell internships 
Cornell University Library will conduct an intern­
ship program in preservation management and 
practice for Native Americans during the next 
two years. Funded by the Institute of Museum 
and Library Services, this program is intended 
to create a cadre of 12 professionals to work 
in tribal colleges and universities infl uencing 
the preservation of Native American cultural 
heritage and training others in appropriate 
preservation practice. 

Six interns will study and work at Cornell 
in Ithaca, New York, during June, July, and 
August of 2005 and another six will train in 
the summer of 2006. They will learn about 
preservation program development, includ­
ing preparing needs assessments, surveys, 
emergency preparedness and response plans, 
and grant proposals. 

The internship, costs of travel and hous­
ing, and a $5,000 stipend will be provided to 
each applicant selected. For more information,
