jan05b.indd Jane Hedberg P r e s e r v a t i o n N e w s Bookbinding exhibit The Department of Rare Books and Special Collections in Firestone Library at Princeton University has mounted Hand Bookbind­ ings from Special Collections in the Princ­ eton University Library: Plain and Simple to Grand and Glorious. It is an online version of a traditional exhibit at the library between November 2002 and April 2003. There are images of more than 200 bindings divided into 26 categories by binding types and techniques. Viewers may closely examine binding details by using the magnifi er func­ tion to select an area and the amount of magnifi cation desired. IASA guidelines The International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) published Guidelines on Production and Preservation of Digital Audio Objects. It was written by members of the IASA Technical Committee, edited by Kevin Bradley of the National Li­ brary of Australia, and endorsed by UNES­ CO as a recommended practice document. The guidelines offer advice about formats and long­term sustainability, whether creat­ ing digital copies from analog originals or digital originals. Recently founded by archi­ vists Carolyn Faber and Dwight Swanson, the alliance is designed to help promote and preserve regional media collections. Its goal is to provide information and advice about care and maintenance of fi lm, video, and audio formats, access policies and strat­ egies, funding and revenue generation, col­ lection promotion, and preservation prin­ ciples and techniques. The founders plan for the MMAA to serve as a clearinghouse for information and resources and hope to create useful connections among individu­ als and organizations that hold this type of resource. (SO­ LINET) is offering three Web­based distance education workshops this winter. The fi rst, “Introduction to Grants for Preservation” will be held online January 20 and March 31, 2005, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. The second, “Preservation and Salvage of Audiovisual Materials” will be held on January 27, 2005, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. The third, “Develop­ ing a Disaster Plan” will be held February 10, February 24, and March 10, 2005, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. The grants and audiovisual workshops cost $100.00 for SOLINET members and $140.00 for nonmembers.
