This endowed position, cre­ ated through a $1 mil­ lion gift, was made in honor of Kuhta, by Eric Weinmann, an emeritus member of the Folger Library Committee and long­time friend to the library. Until Kuhta’s retirement, the position will be known as the Eric Weinmann Librar­ ian of the Folger. Upon Kuhta’s retirement, its name will change to the Richard J. Kuhta Librarian. Catherine C. Marron has been named chairman of the Board of Trustees of the New York Public Library (NYPL). Marron’s appointment by the Board caps a succession of appointments in key leadership positions made by library president Paul LeClerc, sig­ naling a new era of service and a restructur­ ing of operations. Since joining the Board in 1993, Marron has been an active trustee, initiating the Earned Income Committee and joining the committee that oversees the library’s exhibitions. As chairman of the Board of Trustees, Marron plans to concen­ trate on implementing library restructuring and expanding service. Beth A. Stahr, reference/distance learning librarian at Southeastern Louisiana Univer­ sity, has been elected president of the Board for Certification of Genealogists. She has been certified as a Certifi ed Genealogical Records Specialist since 1990 and was elect­ ed as a trustee in 1998. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Board for Certification of Genealo­ gists is an internationally recognized certi­ fication body, not a membership society. Fewer than 1,000 people have been certifi ed by the Board since its 1964 founding. A p p o i n t m e n t s Jim Kapoun has been named the new library director at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa. Since July, 2001, Kapoun had served as instruction coordina­ tor/reference librarian at Minnesota State Uni­ versity. Kapoun has re­ ceived several awards and grants and belongs to many professional library organizations, including ACRL. While serving at the colleges, he has been involved in several campus activities. Over the last ten years, he has made numerous presentations on library­related topics nationwide. He has also authored and co­authored many library­ related articles that have been published in print and on the Web. Kapoun is a past chair of ACRL’s Publications Committee. Patricia Iannuzzi has been named dean of libraries at the University of Nevada­Las Vegas. Iannuzzi has served in increasingly responsible leadership positions at the librar­ ies of Tufts, Yale, and Florida International Universities. R e t i r e m e n t s James Julich has retired after having served the University of Iowa Libraries for 20 years as the humanities and Latin American stud­ ies bibliographer. D e a t h s Robert Laurence Gitler, 95, founding di­ rector of the Japan Library School, Keio Uni­ versity, Tokyo, Japan, has died. Gitler also served as library school director at the Uni­ versity of Washington, the State University of New York­Geneseo, and Peabody College, and as executive director of the ALA’s Library Education Division. He completed his career at the University of San Francisco where he served as University Librarian from 1967 until his retirement in 1975. He received an honorary Ph.D. from Keio University and was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan. His autobiography Robert Gitler and the Japan Library School was published by Scarecrow Press. As dean, Lu­ cas oversaw several academic programs, information technol­ ogy and media ser­ vices, and the college library, for which she was instrumental in designing and oversee­ ing the construction of a new library building. She retired in 2000 after 31 years of service in the Chabot­Las Positas Community Col­ lege District. After retirement, she earned a juris doctorate from John F. Kennedy Uni­ versity and was looking forward to serving the community by providing pro­bono legal services for seniors. David Nowak, 59, associate professor/ref­ erence services librarian at Mississippi State University Libraries, has died. Prior to joining MSU, Nowak worked as a reference librarian at West Virginia Wesleyan College. He also taught French at a number of institutions.
