AHIP is the professional development and career recognition program of the Medical Library Association. An AHIP­credentialed li­ brarian is required to have a master’s degree in library and information science, have worked in the health information field for fi ve years (ten years for the Distinguished Member level), and have demonstrated leadership skills in their profession. Academy members must re­ new their credentials every fi ve years. Lillian Lewis is now the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Library Alli­ ance program officer. She is responsible for the operation of the HBCU Library Alliance, which was formed after a historic meeting in 2002 of HBCU deans and directors of libraries. In addi­ tion, Lewis will coordinate and conduct a two­ year project to strengthen leadership within the HBCU library community and more effectively integrate library services into campus programs for teaching and learning. Lewis most recently worked for ALA as deputy executive director jointly of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies and the Refer­ ence and User Services Association. Clifford Lynch, executive director of the Co­ alition for Networked Information (CNI), has received the Ohio Board of Regents second George V. Voinovich Award for Information Innovation for his contributions in the use of information technology and networked infor­ mation for the advancement of scholarship, librarianship, and intellectual productivity. As Ohio governor, Voinovich spearheaded approval of initial major funding for OhioLINK, a consortium of 84 academic li­ braries and the State Library of Ohio, in 1992. The Voinovich Award recognizes an individual who develops and champions solutions to the problem of connecting people and information effectively and effi ciently. A p p o i n t m e n t s Edwin D. Follick has been appointed di­ rector of university libraries at South Baylo University. The position has responsibility at the main campus in Anaheim, as well as for the Los Angeles campus library and the Re­ search Center Library. He was appointed di­ rector of the business library in 2004 in South Baylo’s constituent university and served as adjunct professor of business law teaching health care law and ethics to juniors and se­ niors completing their bachelor’s of science in management degrees. Robert Cox has been appointed head of special collections and archives at University of Massachusetts­Amherst Libraries. Steve Dalton has joined the staff of the Boston College Libraries as preservation manager. Kurt Eldridge is now technical specialist for the Center for New Media Teaching and Learning at Columbia University. Dave Green is the new associate univer­ sity librarian for collections and information services at Northeastern Illinois University. Glen Wiley has been appointed serials and electronic resources librarian at the North Carolina State University Libraries. R e t i r e m e n t s Fred Hamilton retired from Louisiana Tech University in February 2005 after 24 years of service. Hamilton held various positions in­ cluding: head of bibliographic management, head of the cataloging department, assistant acquisitions librarian, and inter­library loan librarian. He served in leadership roles in the development of the LOUIS statewide network and has been active in the Louisi­ ana Library Association, the Louisiana Chap­ ter of ACRL, and NASIG. Marilyn J. Martin, dean of library services at Rowan University, has retired after a 30­ year career in librarianship. During Martin’s nine­year tenure at Rowan, a thriving Friends of the Library was established, several signif­ icant archival collections were acquired, and a new integrated system was implemented. Prior to the Rowan appointment, Martin was director of learning resources at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Her earlier positions included two in Wash­ ington state: reference librarian at Pacifi c Lu­ theran University in Tacoma and cataloger at St. Martin’s College in Lacey. Martin be­ gan her career in an Armed Forces library in Okinawa, Japan. She was active in various organizations at the national, regional, and state levels. She chaired the ACRL Research Committee (1995–97), the CLS Continuing Education Committee (2000), and the Li­ brary History Roundtable Research Commit­ tee (2000). She was president of the Tri­State College Library Cooperative (2002–03) and a member of the first executive board of the Virtual Academic Library Environment of New Jersey (1999–2002). She also served as an evaluator on Middle States teams (2001– 03). A trained historian, Martin received the LHRT Dain Award in 1993 for her disserta­ tion on the history of public libraries in Ar­ kansas founded by women’s organizations. She has published in both library and his­ tory journals. D e a t h s Alexander MacGregor (Sandy) Gilchrist, 74, head of collection development at the University of South Carolina’s Thomas Coo­ April 2005 327 C&RL News per Library, died Janu­ ary 8 after a long illness. Gilchrist held an MLS from the University of Kentucky and served as a librarian at the Univer­ sity of Kentucky before becoming a reference librarian at the Univer­ sity of South Carolina in 1981. Robert W. Severance, 97, retired director of the Air University Library, has died. He began his library career at North Carolina State Uni­ versity Library; was appointed library director at Stetson University; and, in 1940, became director and dean of libraries at Baylor Uni­ versity. He also worked in the Army Library at the Pentagon and the National Library of Medicine and retired as director of the Air University Library in 1973. Severance was a member of several state and national library associations and served as ACRL President from 1952 to 1953. He founded the Federal Librarians Round Table and was a consultant to several libraries in Europe, Asia, and South America. Elton Bryson Stephens, 93, founder and chairman emeritus of EBSCO Industries, Inc., has died. Stephens gifted his alma mater Birmingham­Southern College with the Elton B. Stephens Science Center, and he and his wife helped establish the Alys Robinson Ste­ phens Performing Arts Center at the Universi­ ty of Alabama­Birmingham, named for her. In 1944, he and his wife formed a partnership to sell spirt de corps and recreational supplies, including magazine subscriptions, to the U.S. Armed Forces. Today, EBSCO is a collection of more than 30 business units with 5,000 em­ ployees active internationally in information services, publisher services, real estate devel­ opment, and manufacturing. The obvious strength of Manybooks.net is its ability to deliver a rich digital archive in many portable formats. However, Many­ books.net goes beyond its role as a deposi­ tory by promoting its content in effective ways. The site provides users with lists of its most popular titles, special collections, and recent additions. It also offers visitors access to a unique “eBook Cover Gallery.” This gallery is an extraordinary collection of original book cover images for many of the titles in the collection.
