Chilana, associate professor of library administration and South Asian Stud­ ies at the University of Illinois Library at Ur­ bana­Champaign, has been honored with a fellowship by the Society for Information Science, India (sis­india.net.rms.com) for his outstanding contributions to the develop­ ment of library and information science. Dur­ ing the last 30 years, Chilana has served as librarian and faculty member for university and public libraries in Canada, India, and the United States. He is actively involved in vari­ ous national and international organizations, including ACRL’s Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Section. He has published extensive­ ly, including five books, 35 research papers, and more than 25 book reviews. Among the new members elected to the Board of the Council on Library and Infor­ mation Resources (CLIR) are: Mark Dimuna­ tion, assistant director for special collections and rare book and special collections divi­ sion chief, Library of Congress and Wendy Pradt Lougee, university librarian, University of Minnesota. Deanna B. Marcum has re­ tired from the Board after serving CLIR as its former president and, since her appoint­ ment to the Library of Congress in 2003, as a Board member. The directors of the Association of Research Libraries adopted a resolution honoring the contributions of former SPARC Executive Di­ rector Rick Johnson. Johnson resigned as executive director of SPARC, effective July 1, after seven years of service. He is the found­ ing president and chief operating offi cer of BioOne, an innovative aggregation of high­ impact bioscience research journals. Eleanor Mitchell, head of the UCLA Col­ lege Library, has been named Librarian of the Year by the Librarians Association of the University of California, Los Angeles. Mitch­ ell has been head of the College Library, which is UCLA’s main undergraduate library, since 1995. One of her particular areas of emphasis has been identifying and meet­ ing the unique information and research needs of undergraduate students. To this end, she has supervised the implementation of electronic reserves; expanded means of reference assistance, including e­mail, tele­ phone and real­time, Web­based chat; and guided the library’s information literacy ef­ forts from an initiative launched in 2001 to a full­fledged, ongoing program. Under her leadership, the program conducted studies to assess the information­seeking abilities of UCLA undergraduate students and held fo­ cus groups with faculty to learn their views about students’ needs in this area. James A. Nelson, state librarian and com­ missioner of the Kentucky department for libraries and archives, has been elected SOLINET Board chair for 2005–06. Nelson has been a member of the Board since 2002 and served as secretary in 2003; he has also served on SOLINET’s Bylaws and Governance Committee. Carol Pitts Died­ richs, dean of libraries at the University of Kentucky, and William Miller, director of libraries at Florida Atlantic University, were elected to the SOLINET Board of Di­ rectors. Barbara Dewey, dean of libraries at the University of Tennessee­Knoxville, and John Ulmschneider, university librar­ ian at Virginia Commonwealth University, were elected as SOLINET delegates to OCLC Members Council. DLF is a consortium of libraries and related agencies that are pioneering the use of electronic­information technologies to ex­ tend collections and services. The Forums, attended by librarians and technologists from the 30 plus DLF institutions, provide an opportunity for attendees to share and discuss cutting­edge digital library activities and issues. A p p o i n t m e n t s Jane Burke has been appointed vice presi­ dent of ProQuest Information and Learning and general manager of Serials Solutions, a Seattle­based business acquired by the com­ pany in July 2004. Prior to joining ProQuest, Burke co­founded and served as president/ CEO of Endeavor Information Systems until its sale to Reed Elsevier. Under her direction, the information retrieval company grew to $25 million in sales. She now serves on the Board of Governors for the Northwestern Uni­ versity Library and on the Board of Directors for the Dominican University Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Frank D’Andraia has been named dean and director of the university libraries at the University of Albany. D’Andraia had been dean of library services at the University of Montana­Missoula since January 2000. He previously held positions at other libraries, including the University of North Dakota, the University of California­Riverside, and the University of Louisiana­Lafayette. He is a member of ACRL and has contributed to such publications as the Journal of Library Administration and Resource Sharing and Information Networks. Joyce Garnett was reappointed university librarian at the University of Western Ontar­ io (UWO). Garnett has been in the position since 1998. Garnett is active in many profes­ sional associations, including membership on the Board of the Directors of the Asso­ ciation of Research Libraries. She is also cur­ rently serving as president of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries, treasurer of the Ontario Council of University Librar­ ies (OCUL), and is working with OCUL’s Scholars Portal project. Before joining the UWO, Garnett was executive director of University Advancement, associate librarian with tenure, and director of the library at Laurentian University. Prior to employment at Laurentian, she was associate librarian at McGill University. Elsie Pritchard has been named new dean of library services at the Camden­ Carroll Library at Morehead State Uni­ versity. Prior to this position she was as­ sistant director of libraries for technical services and automation. She currently serves on the board of the Kentucky Li­ brary Association and is also a member of ALA, ALCTS, the Kentucky SOLINET Us­ ers Group, and the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians. Gerald “Jay” Schafer has been named the permanent director of libraries at the Uni­ versity of Massachusetts­Amherst (UMA), having served as interim director since Jan­ uary 2004. Schafer joined the UMA library system in 2000, serving as coordinator of collection development. In 2001, he worked with the library director and various bud­ get and acquisitions officials to respond to budget cutbacks. In 2002, he was promoted to associate director for content acquisition and access. Prior to joining UM, Schafer was director of library and information services at the Hatch Library at Bay Path College in Longmeadow, Massachusetts (1997–2000) and assistant director for research services at Auraria Library at the University of Colo­ rado­Denver (1984–97). Williams has been named reference librarian at the University of Mis­ souri­Kansas City. D e a t h s Thelma Tate, coordinator of global outreach services and liaison for persons with disabili­ ties for the Rutgers University Libraries, has died. Tate worked as a reference librarian in the Chicago public libraries before accepting a position at Rutgers University’s Douglass Li­ brary in 1970. At various points Tate served as the library’s liaison to the American studies, African studies, classics, education, English, history, psychology, religion, romance lan­ guages, sociology, and speech departments. She served as coordinator of reference ser­ vices at the Douglass Library for many years. Tate was very active in national and interna­ tional library organizations, serving as chair of ALA’s Library Instruction Round Table and as chair of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) Round Table on Continuing Professional Education. As a frequent invited exhibitor at ALA’s Annual Diversity Fair, she most recently showcased the Rutgers University Libraries/SCILS resi­ dent/internship position. Tate was interna­ tionally recognized as the leading expert on the many uses of mobile libraries in develop­ ing countries. She compiled and edited well­ acclaimed bibliographies on mobile libraries across the globe and personally traveled to assess the effectiveness of camel­born mo­ bile libraries in Kenya and donkey­driven library carts in Zimbabwe. In recognition of her long, varied, and distinguished service to Rutgers University, and to the international field of librarianship, Tate was awarded the Rutgers University Human Dignity Award in April 2002. Pamela L. Wonsek, 55, died May 3 after a brief illness. She was deputy chief librarian at the Hunter College Libraries, City Univer­ sity of New York. She joined the Hunter Li­ brary faculty in 1987 and served in a variety of positions until her appointment as deputy chief librarian in 1998. Prior to joining Hunt­ er, Wonsek worked at Mercy College Librar­ ies (1980–87), the University of Missouri­St. Louis (1978–79), and Harvard University (1977–78). Many consumers might be intimidated by the amount of specialized information within the site. The Web site is an extremely valuable resource for the researcher who needs to stay current on geriatric research and funding opportunities.
