UIUC GSLIS program 
The Graduate School of Library and Informa­
tion Science (GSLIS) at the University of Illinois 
at Urbana­Champaign (UIUC) announced the 
creation of the Midwest Book & Manuscript 
Studies program (MBMS). This new 12­credit 
hour (four course) program will grant Gradu­
ate Certificates in Special Collections. “Preserv­
ing Information Resources” and “The Manu­
facture, Description, Uses, and Preservation of 
Paper in the Scholarly World” are among the 
elective courses offered. A bachelor’s degree is 
required for acceptance. The MBMS program 
will also house the Soybean Press (an imprint 
devoted to teaching letterpress printing) and a 
series of book arts workshops and lectures.

Michigan SI program 
The School of Information (SI) at the Uni­
versity of Michigan has added six new areas 
of specialization to its Master of Science in 
Information program. Joining the three exist­
ing specializations (library and information 
services, archives and records management, 
and human­computer interaction) are social 
computing, incentive­centered design, com­
munity informatics, information analysis and 
retrieval, information policy, and preservation 
of information. Preservation of information will 
cover preservation challenges and practices for 
materials in all formats. It will focus on cura­
tion, reformatting, and collection management 
of digital materials and Web archiving.

CCAHA workshop 
The Conservation Center for Art and Historic 
Artifacts (CCAHA) will present “Architectural 
Records Symposium: Managing and Preserving 
Design Records,” July 16 and 17, 2007, at the 
Chicago History Museum in Illinois. The sym­
posium will cover the significance and nature 
of the materials, collecting policies, appraisal, 
intellectual control, preservation, conservation, 
access, and management of electronic fi les. 
The faculty includes Lori Boyer and Mary 
Woolever of the (Art Institute of Chicago), Joan 
Irving (CCAHA), Waverly Lowell (University 
of California), William Maher (University of 
Illinois at Urbana­Champaign), Tawny Ryan 
Nelb (Nelb Archival Consulting), Lois Olcott 
Price (Winterthur Museum), Laura Tatum (Yale 
University), and William Whitaker (University 
of Pennsylvania).

Photos workshop 
The George Eastman House, the Image Per­
manence Institute, and the Rochester Institute 
of Technology are again sponsoring “Preserv­
ing Photographs in a Digital World.” It will 
be held August 18­23, 2007, in Rochester, 
New York. This workshop covers traditional 
photograph preservation techniques and 
digital imaging.
