A p p o i n t m e n t s Gerald Franz has been named library di­ rector for Southwest Florida College in Fort Myers, Florida. Susan Gibbons has been named vice provost and Andrew H. and Janet Dayton Neilly dean of River Campus Libraries at the University of Rochester, effective March 1. She succeeds Ronald F. Dow, who will step down March 1 after 11 years as dean. Gibbons was ap­ pointed associate dean for public service and collections development in 2004, and since then she and Dow have worked closely to­ gether on a number of projects that renewed the relevance of the campus’ libraries in the face of the Internet and digitally formatted research resources. The Gleason Library, completed this fall, uses many elements of student designs thanks to an initiative started under Gibbons and led by the library’s an­ thropologist. Gibbons has taken the reins on Dow’s user-based philosophy and it has spurred another anthropological study, this time on graduate students, as well as a variety of software and technological developments meant to make data navigation and storage easier. In 2007 she coedited a book, Studying Students: The Undergraduate Research Project at the University of Rochester, on the process. She also authored The Academic Library and the Net Gen Student: Making the Connections, last year. Gibbons has risen steadily through the ranks of the library since September 2000, when she joined the staff as part-time employee, who evaluated and recommended institutional repository software for an up­ coming library transition. From there she was promoted to manage the implementation process, and eventually to digital initiatives librarian. Two years later, she was appointed to director of the Digital Library Initiatives project, and in 2004 she was named associ­ ate dean. Before coming to the University of Rochester, Gibbons was an audiovisual librarian at St. John Fisher College. Julia Kiple Sollien has been named director of the Capella University Library in Minne­ apolis, Minnesota. Prior to this appointment, Sollien held positions at the University of Minnesota Libraries in Minneapolis, Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, Plattsburgh State University in Plattsburgh, New York, and Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. Toni Anaya has joined the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries as multicultural studies librarian. Marilia Antunez has been appointed science and allied health librarian at Ap­ palachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Retirements Patricia Meckstroth, humanities librarian since 2000, retired in December 2007 from Il­ linois State University Milner Library after 31 years of service. She worked as in the General College Library before serving as acting direc­ tor of general education for Illinois State. Pearline Palmer Harmon, library coordina­ tor for the LRC-Norfolk Campus of Tidewater Community College since January 2001, has re­ tired. She has been active in the Virginia Library Association serving as forum chair of Region III and the Ethnic Forum, and as a member of the awards committee and convention and confer­ ence committees; she was also a member of ACRL. Harmon was a librarian for more than 40 years, serving as a school librarian and the department head of reference and circulation at Norfolk State University. W. Walter Wicker, dean of library services at Louisiana Tech University, retired on Decem­ ber 31, 2007, after 14 years of service at the university and more than 50 years of service to the profession. Wicker also served as president of the Louisiana Library Association. D e a t h s Wayne Morris Burton, 58, head of access services at the Old Dominion University Li­ braries in Norfolk, Virginia, died December 1, 2007. Burton was interlibrary loan librarian at Old Dominion from 1978 to 2002, when he was appointed head of access services. He was selected as Old Dominion Librarian of the Year in 2003.
