$500,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation to continue their cooperative pro
gram designed to encourage undergraduates,
including those from diverse backgrounds,
to pursue careers in librarianship. The new
grant builds on three grants awarded by the
Mellon Foundation in June 2003, December
2004, and December 2006. It brings the
amount awarded for the various phases of
the librarianrecruiting program to a total
of $2,075,000. The grant will continue to
encourage the participation of students from
the four federally defined minority groups
(African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos,
and Native Americans) that are signifi cantly
underrepresented in the profession. Mem
bers of the consortial program—libraries at
Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte,
North Carolina; Oberlin College in Oberlin,
Ohio; Occidental College in Los Angeles,
California; Saint Augustine’s College in Ra
leigh, North Carolina; Swarthmore College in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and the Atlanta
University Center in Atlanta, Georgia, which
serves Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse
College, and Spelman College—will take part
in all aspects of the project. Wellesley College
in Wellesley, Massachusetts, will participate
through summer internships.

$1.1 million, features more than 83,000 indi
vidual photos covering the period from 1912 to
1984. The collection provides historic, social,
and industrial documentation, featuring images
of products, workshop and factory scenes, fa
cilities, company events, companysponsored
celebrities and the development of the Good
year Blimp, according to Goodyear offi cials.
Among the highlights of the photo collection:
the first home for Goodyear on the banks of
the Little Cuyahoga River; construction of the
blimp hangar; baseball legend Babe Ruth on
the Goodyear Blimp; and images of other
notable figures, including President Herbert
Hoover, President Richard Nixon, President
Dwight Eisenhower, Arnold Palmer, and Jack
Nicklaus. The collection, which refl ects the
work of several photographers, was started in
1912 by Goodyear founder Frank Seiberling
and stands as one of the first corporate photo
graph collections ever established.
