Teresa L. Knott has been appointed direc­
tor of the Tompkins­McCaw Library for the 
Health Sciences and associate university li­
brarian at the Virginia Commonwealth Uni­
versity (VCU) Libraries. Knott has held a va­
riety of increasingly responsible roles during 
her career, including positions at Texas Tech 
University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock; 
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center 
in El Paso. She joined VCU after serving as 
deputy director, Health Sciences and Human 
Services Library at the University of Maryland­
Baltimore. 

Virginia C. Thomas is now director of the 
Arthur Neef Law Library at Wayne State Uni­
versity. 

Xuemao Wang has been named associate 
vice provost for the Emory University Librar­
ies. Wang previously served as head of library 
systems for the Sheridan Libraries at Johns 
Hopkins University. Known as “Shimo” to his 
colleagues, Wang began his library career as 
head of the information service department 
at the Chongqing School of Government and 
Public Administration in China. 

J. Scott Whiting has been appointed library 
director at the Ellwanger­Hunt Learning Re­
source Center at Concordia College in Selma, 
Alabama. 

Stephen Bales is now humanities and 
social sciences librarian at the Texas A&M 
University Libraries. 

David Banush has been named associ­
ate university librarian for access services at 
Brown University.

Jeffra Bussman has been appointed re­
search librarian for Mathematics and Physics 
and Astronomy at the University of California­
Irvine Libraries. 

John Culshaw is now associate director 
for administrative services at the University 
of Colorado­Boulder Libraries. 

Bess de Farber is the new grants man­
ager at the University of Florida’s George A. 
Smathers Libraries. 

Michele Hayslett has been appointed 
data services librarian at the University of 
North Carolina­Chapel Hill. 

J. B. Hill has been appointed director of 
public services at the Ottenheimer Library at 
the University of Arkansas­Little Rock. 

Margeaux Johnson has joined the Uni­
versity of Florida George A. Smathers Librar­
ies’ Marston Science Library faculty as the 
new science­technology librarian. 

Emily Keller has been appointed political 
science and public affairs librarian, reference 
and research services division at the Univer­
sity of Washington­Seattle. 

Christine King has joined Iowa State 
University as a subject specialist for the 
areas of curriculum and instruction, edu­
cational leadership and policy studies, and 
kinesiology. 

Tony Lin is now research librarian for 
business at the University of California­Irvine 
Libraries. 

Helen Look is now the University of 
Michigan Library’s collection analyst. 

Tobie Matava is now social sciences and 
humanities librarian at Iowa State University. 

Kelly McAnnaney is now supervisory 
archivist at the University of California­San Di­
ego Mandeville Special Collections Library. 

Renee McBride has been appointed 
head of the special formats and metadata 
section at the University of North Carolina­
Chapel Hill. 

Dennis Moser has joined the University 
of Wyoming Libraries as the digital resources 
librarian.

Sarah Passonneau has joined the library 
at Iowa State University as assistant to the 
dean. 

Katherine Pepper is now fi eld services 
coordinator for the Medical Sciences Library 
at the Texas A&M University. 

Deirdre Scaggs has been appointed 
director of archives in the University of 
Kentucky Libraries Special Collections and 
Digital Programs. 

Heather Smedberg has been named 
reference and instruction coordinator at the 
University of California­San Diego Mandeville 
Special Collections Library. 

Aislinn Sotelo has joined the University 
of California­San Diego Mandeville Special 
Collections Library as special collections 
cataloger. 

Cristela Garcia-Spitz has joined the 
University of California­San Diego Libraries 
as digital library project manager. 

Laura Sullivan is now assistant archivist 
in the special collections department at the 
Iowa State University Library. 

Tracy Sutherland has been appointed 
public services librarian at Eastern Con­
necticut State University in Willimantic, 
Connecticut. 

R e t i r e m e n t s  

John W. Ellison has retired after 38 years of 
service to the University of Buffalo. Ellison 
has written numerous articles and books in 
the subject areas of intellectual freedom, me­
dia/audiovisual librarianship, and distance 
education. As a recognized scholar in these 
fields, he has been awarded four Fulbright 
scholarships: University of the West Indies, 
Jamaica, Department of Library Science; 
National Library of Jamaica; University of 
the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago; and 
the University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, 
Ghana. As well as a long and productive ca­
reer in library education as a faculty mem­
ber in the graduate program of library and 
information studies, his earlier career in li­

brarianship includes time as a school library 
media specialist, public librarian, academic 
librarian, and medical librarian. He has been 
a frequent presenter for ALA and the New 
York Library Association. 

D e a t h s  

David M. Fagerstrom, who served as fac­
ulty director of the University of Colorado­
Boulder (UCB) Science Library for 29 years 
has died. His career included positions at 
University of Connecticut Health Center Li­
brary; George Washington University Medi­
cal Library; Oxford Academy Library in 
Westbrook, Connecticut; and Southern Il­
linois University­Carbondale. Fagerstrom 
joined the UCB Libraries in 1981. He was 
a member of the ALA, Medical Library As­
sociation, Special Libraries Association, and 
Colorado Library Association.
