Knott has been appointed direc­ tor of the Tompkins­McCaw Library for the Health Sciences and associate university li­ brarian at the Virginia Commonwealth Uni­ versity (VCU) Libraries. Knott has held a va­ riety of increasingly responsible roles during her career, including positions at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock; Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso. She joined VCU after serving as deputy director, Health Sciences and Human Services Library at the University of Maryland­ Baltimore. Virginia C. Thomas is now director of the Arthur Neef Law Library at Wayne State Uni­ versity. Xuemao Wang has been named associate vice provost for the Emory University Librar­ ies. Wang previously served as head of library systems for the Sheridan Libraries at Johns Hopkins University. Known as “Shimo” to his colleagues, Wang began his library career as head of the information service department at the Chongqing School of Government and Public Administration in China. J. Scott Whiting has been appointed library director at the Ellwanger­Hunt Learning Re­ source Center at Concordia College in Selma, Alabama. Stephen Bales is now humanities and social sciences librarian at the Texas A&M University Libraries. Tracy Sutherland has been appointed public services librarian at Eastern Con­ necticut State University in Willimantic, Connecticut. R e t i r e m e n t s John W. Ellison has retired after 38 years of service to the University of Buffalo. Ellison has written numerous articles and books in the subject areas of intellectual freedom, me­ dia/audiovisual librarianship, and distance education. As a recognized scholar in these fields, he has been awarded four Fulbright scholarships: University of the West Indies, Jamaica, Department of Library Science; National Library of Jamaica; University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago; and the University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana. As well as a long and productive ca­ reer in library education as a faculty mem­ ber in the graduate program of library and information studies, his earlier career in li­ brarianship includes time as a school library media specialist, public librarian, academic librarian, and medical librarian. He has been a frequent presenter for ALA and the New York Library Association. D e a t h s David M. Fagerstrom, who served as fac­ ulty director of the University of Colorado­ Boulder (UCB) Science Library for 29 years has died. His career included positions at University of Connecticut Health Center Li­ brary; George Washington University Medi­ cal Library; Oxford Academy Library in Westbrook, Connecticut; and Southern Il­ linois University­Carbondale. Fagerstrom joined the UCB Libraries in 1981. He was a member of the ALA, Medical Library As­ sociation, Special Libraries Association, and Colorado Library Association.
