Lym most recently served as interim chief librarian and professor at Medgar Evers College and head of instruction and research services at Hunter College. Prior to joining Hunter, Lym was a member of the library faculty at the City College of San Francisco and at several community colleges in the California System. Steven Mandeville-Gamble has been ap- pointed university librarian for the University of California-Riverside Libraries. His previous positions include associate university librarian for collections and scholarly communications at George Washington University (GWU) Libraries; head of special collections at GWU Libraries; head of Special Collections Research Center at North Carolina State University; assistant head of special collections at Stan- ford University; special collections principal librarian of manuscripts processing at Stanford University; and project archivist for special collections at Stanford University. Brenda Mathenia has been appointed uni- versity librarian at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia. Bridgit McCafferty has been named director of library services at Texas A&M University- Central Texas. Joyce L. Ogburn has been named dean of libraries and the Carol Grotnes Belk Distin- guished Professor for Library and Information Studies at Appalachian State University. She will begin her duties Aug. 1. Ogburn was dean of the Marriott Library at the University of Utah from 2005 to 2012, and more recently special assistant to the senior vice president for academic affairs at the university. She also has served as associate director of the libraries, resources, and collection management servic- es, at the University of Washington; assistant university librarian, Information Resources Lois Hamill, university archivist at North- ern Kentucky University’s W. Frank Steely Library, recently published Archives for the Lay Person: A Guide to Managing Cultural Collections. She has also received tenure and been promoted to associate professor. Beverly Lynch, a leading figure in librarian- ship nationally and in Illinois, has been named the 28th Illinois Library Luminary. Luminaries, comprising the Illinois Library Association’s roll of honor, are individuals who have made a significant contribution to Illinois libraries and have been recognized by their peers. Lynch was executive director of ACRL in 1972. Following that, she served as university librarian and professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago from 1977 to 1989. Lynch was president of ALA (1985–86) and twice served as interim president of the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago. In her career as dean and professor at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), Lynch was also founding director of the California Rare Book School and directed the UCLA Senior Fellows Program. Lynch is the author of six books, including The Academic Library in Transition, published in 1989 by Neal Schuman. She has lectured and published widely in the United States, Europe, and the Far East in the areas of library management, organizational design, and standards for libraries. Zakharov is now librarian and curator at Azusa Pacific University Libraries in Azusa, California. R e t i r e m e n t s William K. Black, head of administrative services and professor at the James E. Walker Library at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) has announced his retire- ment. Black started his career in the public library sector serving as assistant head of the Arts Division for the Rockford Public Library (Illinois). He moved on to serve as assistant to the dean and, later, lead of Per- sonnel and Planning at the Ekstrom Library at the University of Louisville. In 1985 he was appointed assistant dean for the Parks Library at Iowa State University, where he also served one year as interim assistant director for public services before moving to MTSU. Black has been involved in library administration, organizational and human resource development, fundraising, and fi- nancial and operational planning in libraries over his career. He was one of the authors of the ACRL white paper Recruitment, Reten- tion & Restructuring: Human Resources in Academic Libraries, editor of the Haworth Press book Libraries and Student Assistants: Critical Links, coauthor of chapters in two recent books—The Generation X Librarian, and Recruitment, Development, and Reten- tion of Information Professionals, and author of a number of professional articles. He has headed or participated in a large number of campus committees at the institutions where he has worked, served as a mentor to many colleagues, and contributed on both the state and national level to the advancement of the profession. He is the recipient of the Francis Neel Cheney Award for significant contributions to the field. In retirement, Black expects to contribute to volunteer ac- tivities in his community and to focus on his side business, DADS2DADS, which provides a forum for improving the skills of fathers. Judy J. Cater has retired following a 38 year career at Palomar College. Joining the William K. Carol Lang has retired after more than 20 years at Temple University, where she has served as interim dean of university libraries for the past two years. She began her career at Temple as coordinator of science librar- ies and later served as assistant university librarian for organizational development and planning. In earlier years, she worked in the Ohio State University Libraries and at St. Louis Community College-Meramec. Phyllis Self has retired as dean of Western Illinois University (WIU) Libraries after seven years of service. Self began her nearly 50- year library career at Black Hawk College’s library as a student assistant. Later, she worked at the Moline Public Library and as a school librarian at the Rockridge district in Taylor Ridge (Illi- nois). Over the years, she served as the di- rector at the medical library at the Univer- sity of Cincinnati and as the director of the health sciences library at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dur- ing her time at WIU, the university libraries have made advances in offering user perks, such as Malpass Mocha Café (a counter that serves coffee and food items) and digital workspace for students via the Digital Com- mons. In 2010, the WIU Libraries and various partners (including the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western) were awarded a consumer health subcontract worth almost $39,000 from the National Network of Librar- ies of Medicine, Greater Midwest Region. Through the initiative, “Building the Future with Community Health Information,” Uni- versity Libraries faculty and staff helped the citizens of western Illinois learn about and use the Medline Plus online resource, a free, health-information Web site. Deaths Edward R. “Ed” Johnson, 72, retired Doris Neustadt professor and dean of libraries at Oklahoma State University, has died. During his career, Johnson served as an academic library administrator at five universities: University of Colorado, University of Iowa, Pennsylvania State University, University of North Texas, and Oklahoma State University, from which he retired after 17 years. During his 40-year career, Johnson published sev- eral journal articles and two books. He was active in the Texas and Oklahoma Library Associations (OLA). OLA honored him as a Library Legend during the state’s centen- nial celebrations and also awarded him its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, in 2004. In 1996 he was recognized as Administrator of the Year by the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration. Phyllis Self
