Welcome to the October 2013 issue of C&RL 
News. This month, ACRL President Trevor A. 
Dawes launches his presidential initiative focus-
ing on financial literacy education with “Libraries, 
ACRL, and financial literacy,” the first installment 
of a series of articles on the topic. Watch for ad-
ditional installments in future issues of the News 
leading up to the ACRL President’s Program at 
the 2014 ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas.

In preparation for the October 21–27, 2013, 
celebration of Open Access Week, this issue’s 
Scholarly Communication column features a piece 
examining “Open access, publisher embargoes, 
and the voluntary nature of scholarship” by Shan 
C. Sutton of Oregon State University. Open access 
is also the focus of the Internet Resources feature, 
where Diane Dawson focuses on tools to assist 
librarians and researchers in “Making your publica-
tions open access.”

Demonstrating the effectiveness of library services 
remains an essential component of proving the value 
of libraries on campus. Jennifer Lanzing and Anna Kijas 
of the University of Connecticut outline that institution’s 
project in “Assessing the value of library instruction ses-

sions.” Changing approaches to teaching information 
literacy can increase the effectiveness of teaching 
and learning. Lisa Shamchuk and Leah Plouffe detail  
“MacEwan University Library’s pedagogical shift” 
towards more active learning in this issue.

Inspired by a January 2013 article in College 
& Research Libraries, Nicole E. Brown and Jill 
Barr-Walker embarked on “Collaboration and in-
novation ‘across land and sea’” to develop effective 
orientation sessions using the Caphalonian Method 
for students traveling between New York Univer-
sity’s New York City and Abu Dhabi campuses.

It essay examining “Self-plagiarism” in academic 
research and publishing by Merle Rosenzweig and

Health Sciences Library, and keep up-to-date with 
the activities of the ALA Washington Office in our 
Washington Hotline department.
