The official results of the 2015 ACRL elections

Ann Campion Riley, associate director for 
access, collections, and technical services at 
the University of Missouri, is the 78th presi-
dent of ACRL.

“I am thrilled to be the next person on a 
long line of hard-working librarians to have 
the opportunity of leading ACRL. The inspir-
ing experience of working with a future-ori-
ented Board of Directors will be wonderful. 
Active ACRL members are all hard-workers, 
and bring a great spirit of inquiry to the orga-
nization. Furthering ACRL’s current initiatives 
such as the Value of Libraries work and the 
study of the role of research data curation in 
libraries are continuing challenges. Looking 
for the next set of challenges won’t take long 
as ACRL looks forward and works to engage 
and serve new and current members.” 

As president, Campion Riley will preside 
over the ACRL Board of Directors and ACRL 
Executive Committee, and plan ACRL’s major 
program at the 2016 ALA Annual Conference. 
She will work with the ALA president and 
other division presidents representing ACRL 
both within and outside of ALA.

Riley’s activities in ACRL include serv-
ing as a member of the ACRL Board of 

Directors (2009–13), ACRL Chapters Council 
(2003–05), ACRL Library Advocacy Institute 
(2003), Regional Advocacy Trainer (2003–05), 
member-at-large of the Distance Learning 
Section (DLS), (2001–03), chair of the DLS 
Membership Committee (2004–06), secretary 
of the Community and Junior College Library 
Section (CJCLS) (1999–2001), and CJCLS Re-
sources Review Committee chair (1996–99).

Riley’s work with state and regional as-
sociations includes serving on the Great 
Western Library Alliance (GWLA) Collection 
Development Committee (2009–present), 
Great Plains Network (GPN) and GWLA 
Advisory Council on the Management of the 
Lifecycle of Research Data Project (2012-pres-
ent), GWLA Digital Collections Committee 
(2007–10), Missouri Library Association (MLA) 
Awards Committee chair (2007–09), as MLA 
president (2005), and as president of the 
Missouri Association of College and Research 
Libraries (2003).

Her awards include being honored as a 
Research Library Leadership Fellow by the 
Association of Research Libraries (2011–12), 
and as a Global Scholar by the University of 
Missouri (2010). She has been awarded the 
“You Make a Difference Award” by the Saint 
Louis Community College (2004). She has also 
been honored with participation in Leader-
ship Chesterfield (2001), LEADERS 1999, 
National Institute of Leadership Development 
and Beta Phi Mu.

Her publications and presentations in-
clude “The Community of Libraries” column 
in MOinfo: Newsletter of the Missouri Library 
Association (2005), coauthor of “Caution! 
Hazardous Substances: Recognizing and De-
flecting Toxic Personalities in the Workplace,” 
presented at the ACRL National Conference in

Baltimore (2007), and coauthor of “Using Staff 
Focus Groups to Help in Services Assessment” 
published in the Proceedings of the North 
Central Association Annual Meeting (2001).

Irene M. H. Herold, university librarian 
at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, has 
been elected vice-president/president-elect 
of ACRL.

“ACRL is a community of impressive, intel-
ligent, and engaged members,” Herold said. 
“I will do my best to honor the trust you all 
have placed in me as your vice-president/
president-elect. I look forward to the next 
three years continuing the momentum of 
the association while collaborating with the 
Board, staff, and members. While humbled 
by the legacy of impressive leaders of the 
past, I will strive to bring Aloha Spirit to my 
term as part of my approach to leadership.”

 “The next three years are an exciting time 
for the association. Work on the Framework 
for Information Literacy for Higher Education 
will continue to be shaped and implemented. 
The ACRL Strategic Plan is undergoing review 
in the coming year and will help reinforce 
current directions and potentially identify 
new ones. The ACRL 2017 conference during 
the association’s 77th year will bring together 
many members to engage in scholarly and 
applied research. The evolving values and 
scholarly environment work will require 
a nimble and responsive association. My 
sleeves are rolled up and I am ready to do 
my part!”

“I am excited to have this leadership role 
and the opportunity to help advance associa-
tion initiatives that will benefit our members 
and their libraries. I would like to thank Scott 
Walter, current C&RL editor and my partner 
in this election endeavor. As we traveled the 
standing for service path, we learned so much 
from all of you. Scott exemplified all who 
stood for election demonstrating knowledge 
and expertise. All of the Board candidates’ 
courage and dedication to service was out-
standing. I also offer a huge mahalo to all 
of you who voted, and to all who agreed 
to stand for election across the division. 

Your dedication is inspiring. I look forward 
to three energizing years and the multiple 
opportunities to get to know and serve you 
along the way.” 

Herold’s activities in ACRL include serving 
as a member of the ACRL Board of Directors 
(2011–15), Communities of Practice Imple-
mentation Task Force (2011–13), Research 
and Scholarly Environment Committee 
(2013–15), Academic/Research Librarian of 
the Year Award Committee (2009 and 2011), 
Law and Political Science Section program 
and award committees (2003–07, 2005–07, 
and 2010–11), and College Libraries Sec-
tion’s Library Directors’ Discussion Group 
(co-convener, 2004–07). Herold additionally 
served the College Libraries Section as vice-
chair/chair/past-chair (2007–11).

Herold’s work with state, regional, and 
other national associations includes serving 
as director of the College Library Directors’ 
Mentor Program (2011–13), chair of the 
Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges’ Library 
Committee (2004–06), member of the ACRL/
New England Chapter Conference Program 
Planning Committee (2003–04), founder and 
chair of the New Hampshire College and 
University Council Libraries Committee’s 
Leadership Mentoring Program (2003–06), 
and vice-chair/chair of the New Hampshire 
College and University Council Libraries Com-
mittee (2000–01).

She has been honored as a member of the 
Beta Phi Mu International Library and Infor-
mation Science Honor Society (1993–present) 
and the Phi Alpha Theta International Honor 
Society in History (1998–present). Herold 
received the ALA/READEX/GODORT Cath-
erine J. Reynolds Award (1994) and was a full 
scholarship recipient for the Ph.D. program 
for managerial leadership in the information 
professions from Simmons College (2007–12).

Her publications include “Capacity Build-
ing: Academic Libraries as Campus Partners,” 
Library Issues, July 2014; coauthor of “Mind-
ful Leadership Defined and Explained,” Ad-
vances in Librarianship, 2014; and coauthor 
of “The Triple Bottom Line: Portable Applica-
