Talea Anderson, Washington State University (WSU) Libraries’ scholarly communication librar- ian, was one of five faculty members to earn a Student Success Seed Grant from the univer- sity aimed at improving student retention and progress toward graduation. Anderson earned a $22,000 grant for her proposal, titled “Afford- able Learning Project: Facilitating Adoption or Development of Open Education Resources and Low-Cost Resources for Use in Courses at WSU.” Lori A. Goetsch, dean of Kansas State Univer- sity Libraries, has been elected to the board of directors for the Kansas Humanities Council, a nonprofit organization that supports community- based cultural programs, serves as a financial re- source through an active grant-making program, and encourages Kansans to engage in the civic and cultural life of their communities. Goetsch served as ACRL president from 2009 to 2010. Linda Plevak, faculty librarian instructor at Northeast Lakeview College (NLC) in Universal City, Texas, is the recipient of a 2016 NISOD Excellence Award. She was recognized for demonstrating an outstanding commitment to students and colleagues at NLC. The National In- stitute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) is a membership organization which promotes and celebrates excellence in teaching, learning, and leadership at community colleges. Appointments Julia Corrin has joined Carnegie Mellon University Libraries as the university archivist, responsible for the administration and manage- ment of Carnegie Mellon University Archives, P e o p l e i n t h e N e w sAnn-Christe Galloway located in Hunt Library. Corrin was the political collections archivist at Arkansas State University. Jennifer L. Dean has been named dean of university libraries and instructional technology at the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan. Dean previously served as library director at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan. Her experience in libraries and ad- ministration spans more than 20 years, including positions at Saginaw Valley State University, Central Michigan University, and Northwestern University. Her teaching experience includes graduate instruction in research methods using a blended online/face-to-face format. John Gallagher has been appointed direc- tor of the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library at Yale University. Elizabeth A. M. Howard has been named director of Eunice & James L. West Library at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas. Howard is also assistant professor of Library Sci- ence. Prior to this position, she was the Digital Repository and Electronic Collections Librarian from June 2014 to May 2016 and interim direc- tor of West Library from June 2015 through May 2016. Susanne Mehrer, deputy librarian of Cam- bridge University Library in Cambridge, England, has been named Dartmouth College’s dean of libraries. She will begin the role December 1, 2016. Mehrer will oversee Dartmouth’s nine li- braries, a professional and support staff of about 170, and a collection of nearly 3.4 million vol- umes, both physical and online. Mehrer’s joined the Cambridge University Library as deputy head of reader services in 2006 and has served as deputy university librarian since 2009. She led a user-centered design initiative that is assessing how students, faculty, and other patrons engage with the library; testing new service models; and using data from these pilot projects to inform planning for how the library can better support October 2016 469 C&RL News the needs of Cambridge’s academic community. Before Cambridge, Mehrer was user services librarian at Queens University Belfast; assistant librarian, deputy user services librarian, and serials librarian at the London School of Eco- nomics; and senior information officer for the Confederation of British Industry. She began her library career as assistant librarian at Manchester Metropolitan University. Anna Beth (Crabtree) Morgan is now execu- tive director of the Mayo Clinic Libraries. Morgan will primarily work in Rochester, Minnesota. She will also have administrative responsibility for the Mayo libraries in Arizona, Florida, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Before joining the Mayo Clinic, Morgan served as the associate vice president for academic resources and director of the library for Union University in Jackson, Tennessee (2009–16). Prior to her employment in Tennes- see, Morgan was a technical services librarian for Missouri Southern State University (2007–09) and the director of Medical Library Services for St. John’s Health System in Springfield, Missouri (1985–2006). Evangela Q. Oates is now director of library services at SUNY-Sullivan County Community College. Erin E. Baucom has joined the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library at the University of Montana as digital archivist. Retirements Maggie Heran, executive director of the Lloyd Library and Museum, has retired. Under Heran’s leadership over the past 13 years, the Lloyd has been transformed, blending the science, art, and history of the collections to achieve far greater outreach, awareness, and use of the institution. Carol Terry has retired as director of Library Services at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), a position she has held since 1987. Her previous positions included serials librarian at the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries of The Art Institute of Chicago, and slide librarian in the Art Department at Stanford University. She has been active in the Art Libraries Society of North America since 1974. She has served on the Boards of the Providence Athenaeum and the Consortium of Rhode Island Academic and Research Libraries. She was a key participant in the building project for the adaptive reuse of a Providence landmark bank building, which quadrupled the size of RISD’s library in 2006. Her chapter on that project, “The making of the 21st century art library: Cultivating vision, collaboration and support,” was published in The Handbook of Art and Design Librarianship (Facet Publishing, London, 2010). Kaiping Zhang has retired as business/eco- nomics librarian after 16 years with the Univer- sity of Oregon Libraries. Deaths Jim Dwyer, librarian emeritus at California State University (CSU)-Chico, has died. Prior to joined CSU, Dwyer held library positions at the SUNY-Albany, University of Washington, University of Oregon, and Northern Arizona University. In 1986, when he joined CSU to work in the Meriam Library as head of Biblio- graphic Services, one of his assignments was as the collection developer for the subject area of English, which he described as a “major joy” in his career. Dwyer wrote 16 scholarly articles in major journals, 19 literary studies, 84 book reviews in Library Journal, numerous poems, and two books. Robert Leroy Jones, Jr., has died. At the Uni- versity of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Jones was promoted through the ranks, ending as a library programs specialist in the Library Development Group. In 2011, Jones was selected as an ALA Emerging Leader and a member of the Illinois State Library’s ILEAD U: Illinois Libraries Explore Apply and Discover Explorer’s Team. He was a 2010 Synergist and was selected in a highly competitive process to serve as one of 35 Na- tional Field Recruiters in the ALA Discovering Librarianship project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Jones was also a supporter of the Springfi eld African American Network of Librarians. He received the Spectrum Scholarship from ALA in 2007. Richard Sweeney, head librarian at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), has died. As university librarian, Sweeney was responsible for overseeing the school’s Robert W. Van Houten Library and Barbara & Leonard Littman Architecture Library. Sweeney joined NJIT in 1995. He had been a member of ACRL for 19 years.
