Cluff received his undergraduate degree, with 
a major in English, in 1967, the m aster of science 
d e g re e  in lib ra rian sh ip  from th e  U niversity of 
W ashington in 1978, and his P h .D . d e g ree  in 
educational adm inistration and educational media 
from th e  U n iversity of U tah in 1976. H e has 
serv ed  as v ic e -p re s id e n t a nd p re s id e n t of th e  
Utah Library Association, as a m em ber of com­
m ittees on m icropublishing and the reproduction 
of library materials in the Resources and Techni­
cal Services Division of the American Library As­
so c ia tio n , a n d  as a m e m b e r o f th e  A dvisory 
C om m ittee of th e  U tah G overnor s Conference 
on Library Information and Services. He received 
the D istinguished Service Award of the College 
and University Section of the Utah Library As­
sociation in 1979.

In his new position at Southern Illinois U niver­
sity Cluff will re p o rt to K enneth G. Peterson, 
dean of library affairs. Library Services is one of 
five adm inistrative units reporting to the dean of 
library affairs at S o u th e rn  Illinois U n iv e rsity - 
C a rb o n d ale; o th e rs in clu d e  th e  L ea rn in g  R e­
sources Service, Special Collections, the C e n te r 
for Dewey Studies, and the Papers of Ulysses S. 
G rant Editorial Project.

H e n r y  M i l l e r  M a d d e n  retired  as university 
librarian, California State University, Fresno, on 
S eptem ber 1, after thirty years in the position. 
He has been nam ed university librarian em eritus 
and b e en  a p pointed adjunct professor of b ibli­
ography.

M adden s career began in 1937 as an instructor 
in history at Stanford University. After naval ser­
vice from 1942 to 1946 he tu rn ed  to librarianship

and was ap p o in te d  college librarian of F resno 
State C ollege in 1949. D u rin g  his te n u re  th e  
book collection grew from 67,000 to 577,000 vol­
umes, and the staff from 10 to 120.

M adden earned his M.A. and Ph.D . degrees at 
Columbia University and his B.L.S. at the Uni­
versity of California, Berkeley. In 1953-54 he was 
a Fulbright lecturer at the Austrian National Li­
b ra ry  and re c e iv e d  a g ra n t in 1978 from  th e  
D eutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst for bib­
liographical investigation at the Staatsbibliothek 
Preussischer K ulturbesitz in Berlin. He was pres­
ident of the California Library Association in 1957 
and editor of the California Librarian, 1963-66.

M adden has published in the fields of both li­
bra ria n sh ip  a nd history; his historical in te rests 
have focused p articu larly  on G erm an-language 
works dealing with California.

R i c h a r d  P a n t a n o  has been named library di­
rector of the H. A. B. and G ertru d e C. Shapiro 
Library at New H am pshire College in Manches­
te r , N ew  H a m p s h ire .
He previously served as

Pantano is a m em ber of the New Ham pshire, 
New England, and American Library associations, 
the Bibliographic Instruction Section of ACRL, 
and the ACRL New England Chapter.

L i l l i e  S. P a r k e r , associate university librarian 
since 1968, has b een  appointed university librar­
ian at California State University, Fresno. Parker 
joined the library staff in 1951 as a m em ber of 
the Catalog D epartm ent. She later worked in the 
Circulation D epartm ent, then served as head of 
the Catalog D epartm ent and as assistant univer­
sity librarian before becom ing associate university 
librarian.

She received h e r bachelor of arts and bachelor

of library science degrees from the U niversity of 
California, B erkeley, w here she was g ra d u ated  
with honors in 1950. She received a scholarship 
in F re n c h  a nd was an alum ni scholar w hile at 
Berkeley.

J o s e p h  A . R o s e n t h a l  has b een nam ed head of 
the five-million-volume library at the University 
of California, Berkeley. H e had b een  th e  acting 
h e a d  of B e r k e le y ’s 
tw e n ty -b ra n c h  lib ra ry  
system  since th e  sum ­
m e r of 1978, w h e n

resigned.

science. After earning a m aster’s in library sci­

ence at Columbia, he in te rn ed  in the Library of 
Congress.

worked for fifteen years in the New York Public 
Library. H e was head of technical services in the 
four-m illion-volum e R esearch L ib raries at New 
York Public w hen h e left for Berkeley at the end 
of 1970.

As head of technical services on th e  Berkeley 
cam pus, he h e lped b ring com puterization to the 
library and netw ork links to lib ra ries at o th e r 
University of California cam puses, Stanford, and 
o ther institutions. The new  university librarian is 
responsible for a $14-million budget and a career 
staff of 420.

R u p e r t  C. W o o d w a r d , un iversity librarian, 
G e o rg e  W a s h in g to n  U n iv e rsity , W as h in g to n , 
D .C ., has retired. W oodward had served as uni­
v e r s ity  lib r a r ia n  at 
G e o rg e  W a s h in g to n  
since 1967. D uring his

RETIREMENTS

V i r g i n i a  N . C e s a r i o , professor and chief li­
brarian at the City College of the City University

of New York, will re tire  March 21, 1980, after 
thirty-two years at the college.

B e a t r i c e  G i f t  has retired from h e r position of 
head of cataloging for the Loyola University of 
Chicago Libraries after fifteen years of service.

R o b e r t  W .  L o v e t t , c u rato r of m anuscripts 
and archives in the Baker Library of the Harvard 
G raduate School of Business Administration, re­
tired on August 31.

Y u r i N a k a t a , docum ents librarian at the Uni­
versity of Illinois at Chicago Circle, has retired 
after a thirteen-year affiliation with Chicago C ir­
cle, w here she was responsible for building a col­
lection of more than 500,000 governm ent publica­
tions.

D a v id  R ay , assistant catalog librarian, Southern 
Illinois University at Carbondale, has retired  after 
nineteen years of service to the university and 
has been granted em eritus status.

L a N e l l e  B . V a n d i v e r , professor and head of 
cataloging, U n iv e rsity  of T e n n e ss e e  L ibrary, 
Knoxville, has retired.

DEATHS

D o r o t h y  R yan M c C a r t h y  died on July 24 in 
Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. She was a li­
brarian at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville,

B a r b a r a  E. N i c h o l s o n , assistant director for 
r e a d e r s ’ se rv ic e s, M iam i U n iv e rsity , O xford, 
Ohio, died on August 31. She had been assistant 
d ire c to r at th e  u n iv ersity ’s King L ibrary since 
1972 and was the science librarian at Miami from 
1970 to 1972. She had form erly served on the 
staffs of the U niversity of H ouston and University 
of Texas libraries.

S e y m o u r  Z w e r d l i n g , 46, head of the Rutgers 
U n iv e rsity  L ib ra rie s ’ Office of P e rso n n e l a nd 
Budget, died suddenly in August. The libraries 
have e stablished a Lois Z w erdling E ducational 
Fund. Persons wishing to contribute may do so

T H E  C O N F E R E N C E  REPORT 
AS A LITERARY FORM

A standard feature of library new sletters is the 
conference or w orkshop re p o rt w ritte n  for th e  
folks back hom e by a lib ra ry  staff m e m b e r or 
new sletter editor. W e have all read (and some of 
us have written) such reports. The new sletter of 
th e  N o rth w e ste rn  U n iversity L ib rary  re c e n tly  
p r i n te d  a c o n fe re n c e  r e p o r t by o n e  “ L. C. 
Dew ey” that spoofs the genre delightfully.

“At the e n d  of last m onth,” th e  rep o rt begins, 
“I struck off for Newark, New Jersey, to attend 
the fourth annual C onference on Mouse and Ro­
d e n t R e la te d  P ro b le m s in U n iv e rsity  a nd R e­
search L ibraries (COMARPURL). The attractions 
of th e  c o n fere n ce , aside from its location, in ­
c lu d e d  th e  c hance to m ake frien d s, e n joy r e ­
f r e s h m e n ts  p r o v id e d  by  e x h ib ito r s , a n d , of 
course, hear papers of interest.

“A very interesting p aper was p re sen te d  during 
th e  H istorical A spects of th e  R o d e n t P roblem  
panel session. In ‘C ontem porary Evidence of the 
Mouse Problem  in Fifteenth C entury Libraries: 
The Mus M usculus MS of Jean le Malchanceaux’, 
the a u th o r ably used both a ne g le cte d  literary 
source and physical evidence to push the aware­
ness of the mouse problem  back fully 100 years 
earlier than h itherto suspected.

“A nother p aper examined statistical aspects of 
th e  p ro b le m : ‘S a m p lin g  P ro b le m s  a n d  th e  
Stochastic M odeling of Library M ouse P opula­
tions.’ The author of the p aper obtained an accu­
rate estim ate of th e  rodent population in a library 
building by first selecting more than 1,000 ran­
dom one-m inute tim e intervals and th en  enlisting 
the aid of library staff and student assistants to

keep a close watch for mice during those in te r­
vals. The carefully coded re tu rn s m ade it possible 
to state with a high d egree of confidence that the 
visible mouse population was .0009 mice. Using 
this data the author expects to develop a tim e- 
series-oriented model of the growth and decline 
of the total mouse population of the library. This, 
of course, will have applications in o th er libraries 
and archives, and m uch in te re s t was expressed 
during the discussion period.

“ F o r th e  first tim e th is y e ar C O M A R P U R L  
took on an international flavor with the participa­
tion of rodent experts from libraries and archives 
o u ts id e  N o rth  A m erica. H e r r  W an ley  o f th e  
Staatsarchiv H anover gave a p aper on ‘Prospects 
in Unorthodox Rodent Control T echniques’ which 
stressed the im portance of new techniques in the 
area of psycho-control, especially through the use 
of portable variable tone generating equipm ent.

“ U nfortunately a m uch a n tic ip a te d  p a p e r on 
‘Non-toxic and E n v iro n m e n ta lly  Sound R odent 
C ontrol Techniques: T he Use of N atural P re d ­
ators in an Academic Library’ was not p resented, 
as th e  a u th o r suffered a tragic a c c id e n t w hile 
handling his dem onstration materials. F ortunately 
his assistant is responding to trea tm e n t well and 
may have the m eth o d  p e rfe c te d  and ready for 
presentation next year.

“As all things m ust, the conference came to an 
end and the delegates p arted having gained new 
friends and ideas, and already looking forward to 
next year’s m eeting.” ■■

Cost and Time Data 
for Libraries Wanted

T he L ibrary M anagem ent Research U nit at 
L oughborough U n iversity is re view ing cost 
and tim e data relating to library and informa­
tion service operations. The object of the r e ­
view is to locate existing cost and tim e data, 
to assess the coverage of topics, to identify 
gaps in that coverage, and to make a critical 
appraisal of m ethods for obtaining cost data.

U ltim ately th e  u nit w ould like to develop 
and publish a m anual on library costs, times, 
a n d  c o stin g  m e th o d s . T h e  u n it w o u ld  be 
pleased to h ear from library and information 
service m anagers who have c arried  out in- 
house costing studies and from those who ex­
perience difficulty in obtaining cost and time 
data for m anagem ent purposes or who have 
e n c o u n te r e d  p ro b le m s  w ith  m e th o d s  a n d  
techniques.

Getting Books to Children
An Exploration o f Publisher-Market Relations

Mr. Turow , Assistant Professor o f C om m unications at Purdue 
University, finds in children's book publishing a fru itfu l area in 
w hich to explore certain ideas related to mass com m unication. 
Despite the great q u antity o f material currently available on 
children's literature, some basic questions about the books 
youngsters read have u ntil no w  been virtu a lly ignored. W hat 
activities are carried o u t by publishing firms in th e ir choosing, 
producing, and m arketing o f children's books? W h a t guidelines 
d irect their activities? W h y are the titles— and the publishing im ­
prints— found in school and p u b lic libraries often so d iffe re n t 
from  the ones fo und in bookstores and departm ent stores? H ow  
do the interactions between librarians and editors, between p u b ­
lishers' representatives and bookstore agents, influence the types 
o f books produced and the titles that end up on library and 
bookstore shelves?

In Getting Books to Children, T urow  finds among children's 
books publishers tw o d istin ct kinds o f organizations, each de­
pendent on particular kinds o f clie n t relationships fo r its survival. 
Each type o f relationship entails corresponding differences in the 
organization o f the firm s and in the kind o f material they publish. 
Buyers fo r mass m arket bookstores require that the juvenile 
works they purchase sell themselves and so stay w ith  the ac­
cepted classics o r the pop u la r "lin e s ," laced as they are w ith  the 
better know n titles. C hildren's librarians, by contrast, emphasize 
q uality in th e ir acquisitions rather than w h a t is inexpensive o r 
form ulaic. The close relationships editors and p ro m o tio n  person­
nel establish w ith  key library systems, coordinators, review media 
personnel, and library school teachers give the more innovative 
children's b o o k publishers strong leverage in m o ld in g  tastes and 
guid in g  the d e fin itio n  o f quality.

W h ile  T urow  makes very specific use o f children's book p u b ­
lishing in his client-relationship model, he is aware o f its general 
value and frequently makes comparisons w ith  related situations 
in o th e r media, particularly children's television.
