W illis E. Bridegam, J r., formerly director 
of libraries at the State University of New York 
at Binghamton, has been nam ed librarian of 

Amherst College. Am­

At Binghamton 
since 1972, Mr. Bride- 
gam was responsible W illis E. Bridegam, Jr.
for all library services

— including the main, science, music, and three 
undergraduate libraries. D uring the preceding 
ten years, he was associated in a wide range of 
capacities w ith the Rush Rhees Library and the 
E dw ard G. Miner Medical Library at the U ni­
versity of Rochester, w here he was also asso­
ciate professor of bibliography.

Mr. Bridegam prepared for college at the 
Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., and earned a 
bachelor of music degree at the Eastm an School 
of Music of the University of Rochester in 
1957. Though his interest in music continued, 
he soon becam e involved in library activities 
and earned his master of science in library sci­
ence degree at Syracuse University in 1964.

He has served on many national and New 
York State committees and as an officer of sev­
eral professional organizations, including the 
American L ibrary Association, the New York 
Library Association, and the South Central Re­
search L ibrary Council. In  1973 he was chair­
m an of the Chancellor’s ad hoc Committee on 
Open Access in the State of New York L ibrar­
ies. At Binghamton he has been a m em ber of 
the university’s major committees and contin­
ues his interest in music as a m em ber of the 
Binghamton Symphony and Choral Society 
Board of Directors.

Amherst’s R obert Frost Library, w hich was 
completed in 1965, has a collection of nearly 
500,000 volumes. Since 1970, Professor Richard 
J. Cody, a m em ber of th e English departm ent, 
has served as college librarian, and Dr. Charles 
T. Laugher has served as director of the Robert 
Frost Library. Mr. Bridegam will combine the 
tw o responsibilities.
