This issue is packed with information on 
your association, some articles about the 
Web, and a little bit of humor.

First, congratulations to Hannelore Rader, 
ACRL’s 1999 Academic/Research Librarian of 
the Year and to all of the other ACRL award 
winners. The winners and information about 
them may be found on pages 278-284.

Second, keep up with the actions of your 
Board o f Directors by reviewing their work 
at the Midwinter Meeting on page 313.

Third, review the new guidelines pub­
lished in this issue. A draft of the revised 
“Guidelines for the security of rare book, 
manuscript, and other special collections” 
appears on page 304 and the committee is 
eager to have your comments. The final ver­
sion of “Guidelines for media resources in 
academic libraries” appears on page 294.

Fourth, ACRL is seeking leaders for its 17 
sections. Consider nominating yourself or a 
colleague to take on a job as an officer. Con­

tact the appropriate Nominating Committee 
chairs, whose names are given on page 317.

This issue continues our efforts to share infor­
mation about library services using new tech­
nologies. Monica Metz-Wiseman et al. review the 
University of South Florida’s plans for building a 
virtual library on page 267. Annette Haines and 
Alison Grodzinski talk about how Web forms 
can enhance reference service on page 271. Our 
latest Internet resource column explores the world 
of fashion on page 287 thanks to Monica Fusich.

As important as it is to work hard, I also 
believe it is important to step back and laugh 
at ourselves sometimes. Art Lichtenstein 
gives us just that opportunity with his “Field 
guide to library managers” on page 274. And 
if you don’t like the stereotypical image o f a 
librarian, on page 277 Angelynn King ad­
vises you to change it.
