Aamodt’s exp ertise in the area o f bibliographic control helped to pro­ vide accurate and efficient access to the li­ braries’ resources. Lawrence Dowler, associate librarian for research and instruction at the Harvard Col­ lege Library, has retired. B efo re his 15-year c a r e e r at H a r v a r d , D ow ler spent 12 years in the Yale University Library. Starting at Yale in 1970 as supervisor o f p r o c e s s in g in m a n u ­ scrip ts and a rc h iv e s , D ow ler rose steadily to b eco m e assistant head, acting head, and head o f m anuscripts and ar­ chives, finally b eco m ­ Law rence D o w le r ing associate librarian for m anuscripts and archives. At the time he left Yale, he was also serving as acting d irecto r o f the B e in e c k e Rare B o o k and Manuscript Library. His most recent publi­ cation, G a te w a y s to K n o w le d g e : T he R o le o f A c a d e m i c L ib r a r ie s in T e a c h in g , L e a r n in g , a n d R e s e a r c h (MIT Press), is b ecom ing an oft-quoted so u rceb o o k for library planners. D ow ler received his Ph.D. in American His­ tory from the University o f Maryland. Marie C. Ellis, English and American Lit­ erature b ibliograp her at the University o f G eorgia Libraries, retired in D ecem b er 1997 after 32 years o f service as an academ ic li­ brarian. She began her professional career in 1966 as a referen ce librarian at the Earl Gregg Swem Library at the C ollege o f Will­ iam and Mary. Loren Forbes, educational media co ord i­ nator in the Inform ation, Research, and In­ structional Services Departm ent, retired on January 23 after 41 years o f service to the U niversity o f Iow a libraries. Form erly in continuing education in the Audiovisual Cen­ ter, Seashore Hall, w here he b ecam e an e x ­ pert at identifying and locating films for fac­ ulty and students, Forbes was em ployed by the university libraries in 1994. Myrtle Nim retired after 33 years o f service to Carnegie M ellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She began her career in 1964, and in 1978 she was appointed music li­ brarian. In 1991 she took on additional re­ sponsibility as librarian liaison to the drama departm ent and continued to support the music department. Earl Rogers, university archivist for the University o f Iowa Libraries, will retire on May 31 after nearly 28 years o f service. D e a t h s Mary Helen Mahar, executive director o f the American Association o f School Librar­ ians from 1954 to 1956, died on March 23. From 1956 until her retirement in 1978, she held various administrative sch o ol library positions in the U.S. O ffice o f Education and was the ch ief o f School Media Resources Branch at the time o f her retirement. Mahar was responsible for the developm ent and implem entation o f rules and regulations for Title II o f the Elem entary and Secondary Education Act, and the definitions she de­ veloped for school library resources, per­ sonnel, and programs are still used through­ out the profession today. In 1981 she re­ ceived the American Association o f School Librarians President’s Award for distinguished service to the school library profession. Marion McGill Smith, 84, of the Stanford Business School’s J. Hugh Jackson Library died at her home February 28 following a brief illness. Smith becam e director of the business school’s library in 1957, adding not only to its collection o f b o o k s and d o c u ­ ments, but also increas­ ing library services and improving the physical surroundings. During Marion McGill Smith her tenure, the collec­ tion grew from 24,000 books and documents housed in cramped quarters on the main quad, to 250,000 vol­ umes spread over three stories in the current business school building. Smith received her AB from the University of Montana in 1938 and moved to Washington, D.C. where she did graduate work. She becam e the head li­ brarian for the National Labor Relations Board and later was named the Washington editor for the Research Institute of America. She was named acting director o f the Jackson Library in 1953 for one year and then was circulation c h ie f o f all Stanford libraries b efo re b ein g nam ed p erm anent d irector o f Ja c k so n . Arthur Curley, a past president of the ALA (1 994-95) and the ARL (1996), died March 31 after a lengthy illness. A native o f Boston, Curley served as director of the Boston Public Library from 1985-96. An active member of ALA for more than 30 years, he served in vari­ ous capacities, including member of the Council, th e g o v e rn in g b o d y (1 9 7 0 -7 4 ,1 9 8 1 -8 7 ), and th e E x e cu tiv e B o ard (1983-87). He served as deputy director o f the New York P u b lic Li­ brary: The Research Li­ braries and held direc­ A r t h u r C u rle y to r s h ip s at th e Cuyahoga (Ohio) County Library, the Montclair (New Jersey) Public Library, the Palatine (Illi­ nois) Public Library, and the Avon (Massachu­ setts) Public Library. He also served as an ad­ junct faculty member at the University of Michi­ gan and Rutgers University Graduate Schools o f Library and Information Science. Curley re­ ceived his bachelor’s in political science from Harvard University, MLS from Simmons Col­ lege, and a doctorate of human letters (Hon.) from the University of Rhode Island.
