Auer, director of libraries at the University of Detroit Mercy, was named Dis­ tinguished Alumna of tire Year by the Library Science Program at W ayne State U n iv ersity (WSU) at its 15th A nnual Alumni Update in March. She was se le c te d for h e r o u t­ standing contributions to ef­ fective and im proved library service, dedicated w ork with library professional associa­ tions, and involvement in con­ tinuing education programming. In her career, Auer has also served as associate director for public ser­ vices, media librarian, and education librarian. She received her MLS from WSU in 1972. Susan Crawford, professor of biomedical com­ munication and director of the Library and Bio­ medical Communications Center at Washing­ ton University School o f Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri, has received tw o aw ards from the Medical Library Association: th e P resid en t’s Award and the Marcia C. Noyes Award. The President’s Award is given annually to an indi­ vidual w h o has m ade exceptional contributions which have enhanced the profession; the Noyes Award, the association’s highest honor, recog­ nizes an individual w ith lasting an d outstand­ ing achievements. The aw ards cite Crawford’s “universal contributions to the profession in the areas o f service, research, and publishing” which have given stature and credibility to health sci­ ences libraries o n both the national and inter­ national levels. D ow ning received his MLS from Rutgers University and is currently in the linguistics program at New York Univer­ sity. After holding several public services posi­ tions at the Kilmer Area Library at Rutgers, he joined the staff o f the Academy in 1985 as m an­ ager o f the corporate fee-based services p ro ­ gram. Ellen S. Dunlap, director of the Rosenbach Museum & Library of Philadelphia, has been selected to serve as president of the American Antiquarian Society fol­ lowing the retirement of Marcus A. McCorison in October 1992. Dunlap holds a B.A. and an MLS from the University of Texas. Her eight-year term of office at the R osenbach has b een m a rk e d by effective long-range planning, successful collaboration Ellen Dunlap with other cultural institutions in the area, a broad range of community outreach activities, and achievement in fundraising. Joanne Euster, vice-president for university libraries at Rutgers University, has been ap­ pointed university librarian at the University of California, Irvine. Be­ fore joining Rutgers in 1986, Euster served as library director at San Francisco State Univer­ sity from 1980-1986, and as university librar­ ian at Loyola University in New Orleans from 1977-1980. She r e ­ ceived her bachelor’s degree from Portland Joanne Euster State College in Oregon, her master’s from the University of Washington, and her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. She has been active in professional associations and served as president of ACRL from 1986-87. Sarah M. Pritchard, associate executive di­ rector of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), has been named director of libraries at Smith College, North-ampton, Massachusetts, effective in August. Pritchard has more than 15 years of experience in library services. She worked in various positions at the Library of Congress from 1977 to 1990, serving first as a reference librarian and specialist in women’s studies, then as head of the Microform Reading Room Section. She served from 1988 to 1989 as an academic library management intern at Princeton University, and assumed her cur­ re n t p o s t at ARL in 1990- Pritchard has writ­ ten many articles for professional and educa­ tional publications, and is currently an elected m em b er o f th e ALA Council. She earned her Sarah Pritchard B.A. in French from the University of Mary­ land, and holds M.A. degrees in French and library science from the University of Wiscon­ sin, Madison. Carole Armstrong has been named assis­ tant director for public services and head of science at the Michigan State University Librar­ ies. Barnes, serials librarian at the Univer­ sity of Toledo (UT) Libraries, has retired and been awarded the rank of professor emeritus after 35 years of service. Barnes served in the Marines during the Korean War, then received his bachelor’s degree in 1957 from UT. He added a master’s in education in 1962 and an education specialist degree in 1983. He has been responsible for the periodical and serial collec­ tion at UT for his entire tenure there, and has seen it grow from several hundred titles to over ­ ­ ­ ­ ­ ­ ­ ­ ­ ­ ­ ­ Harold Borko retired as professor at the Gradu­ ate School of Library and Information Science, University of California, Los Angeles, in June 1992. Appointed to that position in 1968, Borko was instrumental in creating courses that taught the principles and practice of automating vari­ ous library activities. He is an associate editor of the journal Information Processing a n d Man­ agement and the consulting editor for library and information science books for Academic Press. Two of his books—Abstracting Concepts a n d Methods and Indexing Concepts a n d Meth­ ods—have been used as textbooks, and he has published over 35 articles and contributed chap­ ters to over 38 books. Borko received his B.A. in psychology from UCLA in 1948, his M.A. in psychometrics from the University of Southern California (USC) in 1949, and his Ph.D. in psy­ chology from USC in 1952. In 1988 he received the Outstanding Information Science Teaching Award given jointly by the American Society for Information Science and the Institute for Scientific Information. Ellen Rudolph, gifts librarian at Indiana Uni­ versity for 17 years, recently retired from that position. Tony Shipps, English and American literature librarian at Indiana University (IU), Bloom­ ington, recently retired after 25 years of ser­ vice. Shipps received a Ph.D. in English from Northwestern University and an MLS from Michigan.
