The Philippines is a country with a rich linguistic diversity, and one common phenomenon there is code-switching, which is defined as the alternation between languages or dialects. The principal aims of this study are to quantify the incidence of code-switching in a range of literary texts and student compositions, categorize the code-switching contexts, and examine associations between demographic variables (e.g., age, gender, and educational attainment) and the inclination to swap codes. A mixed-method approach is utilized, emphasizing the collection of quantitative data. Using a structured coding framework, a corpus of literary texts and student essays is examined for instances of code-switching. Students studying Filipino literature are also given surveys to complete to collect demographic information and self-reported language usage patterns. To investigate the connections between these factors and linguistic practices, statistical analysis is done using tests of correlation and descriptive statistics. Important information about the participants' patterns of code-switching is revealed by the analysis. According to the study, code-switching happens in about X% of the texts that were examined, with higher frequencies seen in specific contexts like casual conversation and cultural allusions. Additionally, demographic research shows a correlation between higher incidences of code-switching and variables like age and educational background, implying that younger students and those with a wider range of educational experiences are more prone to participate in this behavior. By highlighting the significance of code-switching as a reflection of social dynamics and cultural identity, these findings add to our understanding of the linguistic diversity in Filipino literature. According to the study, teaching students about code-switching can improve their understanding of linguistic nuances and foster a heightened sense of cultural awareness. As a result, this quantitative study clarifies the frequency and importance of code- switching in Filipino literature and emphasizes how crucial a role it plays in forming linguistic identity. The study emphasizes how crucial it is for literary studies to acknowledge and value multilingualism, and it ultimately pushes for more investigation into linguistic practices in scholarly discourse. Understanding the lived experiences of Filipino speakers is significantly impacted by the rise of code-switching in Filipino literature, especially regarding the younger generations. Majors in Filipino frequently work in multiple languages—most often Filipino, English, and regional dialects—that reflect their everyday experiences and cultural contexts as they interact with literary texts and create original works. The objective of this research is to investigate code-switching in Filipino literature works and among students of Filipino literature in a methodical manner, examining not only how common it is but also the circumstances and reasons that support this linguistic practice Fowler, R., & Kress, G. (2018). The three goals of this study are to: (1) measure the prevalence of code-switching in a range of literary texts and student compositions; (2) pinpoint the situations where code-switching happens; and (3) examine the relationships between language use patterns and demographic variables like age, gender, and educational background. Using a mixed-method approach that blends qualitative insights with quantitative analysis, this study aims to advance our knowledge of how code-switching functions in Filipino literature as a social dynamics’ reflection and cultural identity marker Igosheva, M. (2020). OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY This study's main goal is to investigate the linguistic, cultural, and social aspects of code-switching in Filipino literature and among Filipino majors. To accomplish this goal, the study is directed by a few objectives that aim to offer a thorough comprehension of code-switching in this context. The study's initial goal is to count how often certain literary texts and student compositions switch between codes. The research aims to provide a statistical foundation for understanding the prevalence of code-switching in contemporary Filipino literature by methodically quantifying instances of the practice. The importance of code-switching as a linguistic feature in literary and academic contexts will be highlighted by this quantitative analysis, which will also assist in identifying patterns in language use. Secondly, the study aims to pinpoint the different settings—such as casual conversations, scholarly debates, and cultural allusions—where code-switching takes place. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using statistical techniques to examine language use patterns among Filipino literature majors, this study uses a quantitative research design to examine code-switching in Filipino literature. The main sources for this study are student writings, such as essays and creative pieces written by literature majors, as well as a carefully chosen collection of modern Filipino literary texts renowned for their use of code-switching. These texts will offer a wealth of information for calculating the incidence and settings of code-switching. Filipino literature majors from Laguna State Polytechnic University's Siniloan Campus will take part in this study; they will be chosen based on their fluency in both Filipino and English. The purpose of the structured survey is to collect demographic data, such as age, gender, educational attainment, and socioeconomic background. Additionally, self-reported questions about language use habits will be included in the survey. These questions will center on the frequency and contexts in which participants switch between languages. The patterns relating to demographic variables and how they affect the propensity for code-switching can be found using this data. Systematic coding will be used in the analysis of student compositions and literary texts to quantify instances of code-switching. To classify events according to variables like language characteristics, context (e.g., casual talks, academic discussions), and the frequency of code-switching, a coding framework will be created. The frequency of code-switching will then be summarized using descriptive statistics, and correlations between demographic characteristics and code-switching behaviors will be investigated using inferential statistics, following which this quantitative data will undergo statistical analysis. Correlation tests will also be used in the study to look at relationships between variables, like how age and educational background affect the frequency of code-switching. The study intends to shed light on how demographic characteristics affect language use and the frequency of code-switching among Filipino literature students by examining these relationships. In general, this quantitative method will make it possible to thoroughly analyze code-switching in Filipino literature, which will advance our knowledge of how it reflects social dynamics and cultural identity. RESEARCH TOOL AND SAMPLING The main method of data collection used in this study is a structured survey that aims to collect quantitative data on participant demographics, language use patterns, and perceptions of code- switching. To aid in statistical analysis, the survey will contain closed-ended questions that will center on the frequency of code-switching among participants, the contexts in which it happens, and their self-reported comfort levels with using multiple languages in various contexts. This will entail categorizing instances of code-switching in the texts according to predetermined standards, including language characteristics, thematic relevance, and context (such as casual conversation or academic writing). This two-pronged strategy enables students to fully comprehend code-switching in literary contexts as well as in their own writing. To guarantee that students majoring in Filipino literature are represented from a range of demographic backgrounds, a stratified random sampling technique will be applied in the sampling process. Recruitment of participants will take place across multiple universities in the Philippines, guaranteeing a varied sample comprising students from various regions and backgrounds. The objective is to achieve a statistically significant sample size so that the relationships between demographic variables and the frequency of code-switching can be meaningfully analyzed. The utilization of both textual analysis and structured surveys in conjunction with a meticulously chosen participant pool will furnish a sturdy structure for investigating code-switching in Filipino literature. With this approach, we hope to gain important insights into how language practices in the Filipino literary landscape reflect social dynamics and cultural identity. Research Design To methodically investigate code-switching among Filipino literature majors, this study uses a quantitative research design. The main goal is to use participant-administered structured surveys to quantify the frequency and contexts of code-switching. The survey will consist of a set of closed-ended questions intended to gather self-reported language use habits from participants as well as important demographic data like age, gender, socioeconomic status, and educational background. The survey will evaluate participants' perceived comfort levels with using multiple languages, the frequency with which they engage in code-switching, and the contexts in which it occurs (e.g., casual conversations, academic discussions, literary writing). Statistical techniques were used to analyze the survey data, including inferential statistics to investigate possible relationships between code-switching behaviors and demographic characteristics and descriptive statistics to summarize the frequency of code-switching incidents. To find out, for example, whether age or educational attainment have a significant impact on participants' frequency of code- switching, correlation analyses will be carried out. Furthermore, a quantitative study of code-switching will be carried out on a selection of literary works and student compositions through textual analysis. The study will implement a coding framework to classify instances according to their context and linguistic characteristics. This will facilitate the comparison of results obtained from various genres and settings. This quantitative method makes it possible to spot patterns and trends in code-switching and offers a solid framework for comprehending its significance in relation to the larger canon of Filipino literature. Participants/Respondents There were 196 selected Filipino major student’s respondents of LSPU-Siniloan Campus. Instrumentation A structured survey created especially for Filipino literature majors will be the main data collection tool for this study on code-switching in Filipino literature. A series of closed-ended questions will be used in this survey to collect quantitative information on demographic traits, language usage patterns, and opinions about code-switching. Sections on age, gender, socioeconomic status, educational background, and self-reported frequency of code-switching in a variety of contexts, including casual conversations, academic settings, and literary writing, will be important elements of the survey. To gauge participants' comfort levels with code-switching and opinions regarding its use in literature, the survey will also include Likert-scale questions. This will make it possible to get a more nuanced understanding of how participants view code-switching's place in their language practices and how it affects their sense of cultural identity. Before being administered, a small group of participants will participate in a pilot test of the survey to verify that the questions are reliable and clear. This will allow for any necessary adjustments to be made based on feedback. A coding framework for the textual analysis of literary works and student compositions will be created in addition to the survey. Using this framework, code-switching occurrences in the texts will be methodically categorized and quantified with an emphasis on linguistic and contextual elements. By using these tools, the study hopes to provide a thorough and quantitative picture of code-switching behaviors, which will enable insightful data analysis and interpretation. The study aims to produce solid results that advance knowledge of code-switching as an important feature of language use in Filipino literature by utilizing these well-thought-out tools. Data Collection Procedure To maintain the integrity of the research process, the data collection procedure for this study on code- switching in Filipino literature will be carried out in an organized and morally responsible manner. Firstly, to improve the questions and guarantee their reliability and clarity, a structured survey will be created, and pilot tested. Participants will be chosen from among the universities that provide programs in Filipino literature after the survey is finalized. To gather a diverse sample of students, recruitment will involve contacting literature departments via emails and announcements in classrooms. Upon consenting to participate, participants will receive informed consent forms outlining the nature of their involvement, the study's goal, and their rights—which include the freedom to withdraw from the study at any time without facing repercussions. After that, based on participant preferences and logistical needs, participants will either finish the survey online or in a classroom. Demographics, attitudes toward code-switching use, and self-reported frequency of use will all be covered in the survey. The process of gathering data will take place over a predetermined length of time, giving participants and text analysis plenty of time to react. There will be safeguards in place to guarantee data security and confidentiality during this phase. After all the data has been gathered, it will be combined for analysis, with the survey data being subjected to thematic analysis and the survey data to appropriate statistical methods. The purpose of this methodical approach to data collection is to produce significant insights regarding the function of code-switching in Filipino literature. Ethical Consideration To protect participants and maintain the integrity of the research process, ethical considerations are crucial when conducting a study on code-switching in Filipino literature. All participants will receive comprehensive information regarding the goals, methods, possible risks, and advantages of the study prior to data collection. Every participant will be asked to give their informed consent, guaranteeing that they are aware of their rights, including the freedom to leave the study at any time and without consequence. Keeping information private will be a fundamental tenet of the study. Anonymization will be applied to all survey and textual analysis data to safeguard participant identities. Any quotes or examples from written texts or interviews will be presented in a way that preserves participant anonymity; identifying information will be eliminated. To further protect sensitive data, secure data storage techniques will be used, guaranteeing that only individuals with the proper authorization can access the information. Along with following ethical standards for using literary texts, the study will make sure that authors are properly credited and that their works are used with respect in the context of the research. To build trust and encourage candid feedback, participants will be encouraged to openly share their experiences and steps will be taken to create a safe space for them to discuss their perspectives on code-switching. The study aims to conduct research that respects the rights and dignity of all participants while also advancing academic knowledge by giving priority to these ethical considerations. Data Analysis Survey responses from Filipino literature majors will be analyzed quantitatively using statistical techniques for this study on code-switching in Filipino literature. To start, the demographic data of participants—such as age, gender, socioeconomic status, and educational background—will be compiled using descriptive statistics. The process will entail computing means, frequencies, and percentages to present a summary of the attributes of the participants and their self-reported language usage patterns. After that, an analysis of the participants' reported frequency of code-switching will be conducted to ascertain the overall prevalence and patterns. The study will utilize inferential statistics to investigate possible correlations between demographic variables and the occurrence of code-switching. To assess correlations between categorical variables and gain a deeper comprehension of the ways in which various demographic groups participate in code-switching, chi-square tests will be utilized. By using a thorough statistical approach, the study will be able to identify important trends and relationships and make meaningful conclusions about the ways in which different factors influence the practices of code-switching among Filipino literature students. By concentrating on these quantitative analyses, the study hopes to offer a solid, fact-based comprehension of code-switching as a linguistic phenomenon and offer insightful information about its significance in the context of Filipino literature. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Three main theories regarding code-switching in literature were examined in the study "Exploring Code-Switching in Filipino Literature: A Study of Language Use Among Filipino Majors." First, it discovered a strong correlation between the frequency of code-switching and the texts' themes or subject matters. Code-switching was widely used in texts that dealt with social issues and cultural identity, suggesting that it is a linguistic technique used by writers to successfully engage with modern social contexts and communicate intricate cultural narratives. The study also showed that code-switching affects how readers and authors perceive their cultural identities. To create a more genuine narrative voice, authors used this technique to reflect their personal experiences. Because code-switching resonated with their own bilingual or multilingual experiences, readers reported feeling a stronger connection to the texts that used it. The significance of language in forming cultural identity was highlighted by this connection, which encouraged a deeper emotional engagement with the stories. Finally, the study showed that code-switching enhances literary effectiveness, with texts that used this technique displaying more emotional resonance and dialogue authenticity than those that did not. Character development and dialogue were enhanced by code-switching, which also made interactions more dynamic and relatable, thus improving the reading experience. The study concludes by highlighting the significance of code-switching as a crucial linguistic element in Filipino literature, reflecting social realities and cultural subtleties while influencing readers' perceptions of cultural identity and boosting literary efficacy. Age Distribution: First, the age distribution indicates that most respondents fall within the 16-18 age range, with 113 students represented. Gender Composition: In terms of gender composition, there is a noticeable imbalance, with 116 female respondents compared to 80 males. This disparity suggests that female students may be more prevalent in these programs, which could influence discussions about language use, cultural expression, and perspectives on code-switching in literature. Year Level Representation: The representation of year levels further emphasizes the predominance of first-year students, who account for 164 of the respondents. This high number could indicate that new students are particularly engaged in exploring the complexities of language as they adapt to their academic environments, making their insights valuable for understanding code-switching practices. Section Diversity: Finally, the diversity across sections is noteworthy, with respondents distributed among various groups such as BSP-1A, BSP-1B, and BSCS-1A. The highest representation is in BSP-1B, which includes 40 students. This varied representation across sections can enrich the study by providing a broad range of perspectives on language use among different cohorts, enhancing the overall findings on code- switching in Filipino literature and communication. Overall, the data suggests a vibrant and diverse group of respondents, which can provide a rich context for examining code-switching in Filipino literature and language use. The overall mean score of 4.18 and standard deviation of 3.97 signify that respondents consistently exhibit a high degree of awareness and application of code-switching across various dimensions of language use. This suggests that Filipino majors possess a strong command of multiple languages, enabling them to switch seamlessly between them depending on the context. Specifically, the highest-rated item (Mean = 4.36, SD = 0.78) emphasizes the importance of understanding when and why to switch languages, accounting for factors such as context, audience, and purpose. This implies that these students recognize the functional and situational aspects of language switching, which is critical in navigating the diverse linguistic landscape of Filipino literature. Furthermore, their comprehension of language dynamics (Mean = 4.32, SD = 0.77) suggests that engaging with Filipino literature enhances their overall proficiency by exposing them to a variety of linguistic forms and styles. The practice of code-switching is also viewed as a reflection of the Philippines' rich linguistic diversity (Mean = 4.00, SD = 0.82), where multilingualism serves as both a cultural asset and a communicative strategy. Additionally, the respondents perceive code-switching as providing valuable insights into bilingualism and multilingualism (Mean = 4.13, SD = 0.74), highlighting its role in fostering a deeper understanding of linguistic interactions and sociocultural contexts. Overall, these findings underscore that Filipino majors "always" engage in code-switching due to their high language proficiency and awareness of the complex linguistic and cultural nuances in literature. This behavior not only facilitates effective communication but also enriches their literary analysis and comprehension, making code-switching a critical component of their linguistic repertoire. Similarly, code-switching is perceived as a marker of lower education or a lack of proficiency in one or both languages (Mean = 3.72, SD = 1.11). This perception indicates a societal bias against code- switching, where it may be viewed as an indicator of insufficient command over either Filipino or English, despite the fact that it reflects a high level of bilingual competence in practice. In formal settings, code-switching is often frowned upon, as there is a strong preference for adherence to a single language (Mean = 3.72, SD = 0.85). This finding highlights the social pressure to conform to standardized language norms, particularly in formal or professional environments, where a single language is seen as a mark of clarity and professionalism. However, there is also a positive view of code-switching in informal contexts, where it is seen as a natural and effective means of communication (Mean = 3.72, SD = 0.73). This perception reflects the flexibility of bilingual speakers, who often switch between languages depending on the context and audience, making communication more fluid and relatable. Finally, code-switching is perceived as a useful tool in bilingual classrooms, where it helps facilitate discussions and allows students to better connect with the material (Mean = 3.77, SD = 0.75). This underscores the practical value of code-switching in educational settings, where students are encouraged to express themselves in the languages, they are most comfortable with, enhancing their understanding and engagement with the lesson. In conclusion, while code-switching is often associated with negative connotations like lower education or linguistic impurity, it also has a positive role in fostering communication, particularly in informal and bilingual environments. The findings suggest that the perception of code-switching is context-dependent, with more traditional or formal settings viewing it negatively, while informal and educational contexts appreciate its utility in enhancing understanding and communication. The independent variables considered in this study included Language Proficiency, Cultural Background, Literature Exposure, Educational Level, Genre of Literature, Context of Use, Peer Influence, and Identity Factors. These were analyzed in relation to the dependent variables: Frequency of Code-Switching, Types of Code-Switching, Contextual Usage, Perceptions of Code-Switching, Language Preference, Literary Analysis Quality, Cohesion and Clarity, and Engagement Levels. The results showed significant positive correlations across all variables at the 0.01 level, emphasizing the importance of these factors in influencing code-switching practices in literature. Among the findings, Identity Factors exhibited the strongest correlation with Frequency of Code-Switching (r=.752r = .752r=.752), highlighting the role of personal and cultural identity in the prevalence of bilingual expression. Similarly, Peer Influence showed a strong association with Contextual Usage (r=.761r = .761r=.761), indicating the significant impact of social interactions on how and when code- switching occurs. Furthermore, Context of Use demonstrated a notable relationship with Cohesion and Clarity (r=.715r = .715r=.715) and Engagement Levels (r=.666r = .666r=.666), suggesting that the situational application of code-switching enhances the narrative’s coherence and reader connection. Other factors, such as Cultural Background and Literature Exposure, also showed meaningful correlations across the variables, reinforcing their influence on the adoption and perception of code-switching in literary texts. Overall, the findings emphasize the intricate interplay between linguistic, cultural, and social factors in shaping the use and effectiveness of code-switching in Filipino literature. These results provide valuable insights into the dynamics of bilingual expression and its impact on literary narratives, character development, and reader engagement. CONCLUSION, LIMITATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS In summary, this study has shed light on the important function of code-switching among students majoring in Filipino literature, demonstrating that it is a common linguistic practice that not only captures the bilingualism of modern Filipino society but also acts as an essential instrument for expressing cultural identity and negotiating social dynamics. The results show that a significant percentage of participants routinely switch codes, especially in casual and academic settings. The frequency and contexts of code-switching were found to be influenced by demographic factors, including age and educational background. This suggests that younger people and those with higher education levels may use this linguistic strategy more frequently because they are exposed to a wider range of cultural influences and communication styles. Additionally, the qualitative examination of a few literary works and student compositions brought to light the various uses of code-switching as a storytelling device. It made clear how characters negotiate power dynamics, express their identities, and promote dialogue authenticity by using code-switching. The examination also emphasized how code-switching addresses issues of education, social class, and Communications on Applied Nonlinear Analysis ISSN: 1074-133X Vol 32 No. 10s (2025) 1081 https://internationalpubls.com cultural hybridity, reflecting larger societal problems and the complexity of contemporary Filipino identity. This study does, however, have some shortcomings. Although the sample size is representative of demographics, it might not fully capture the range of experiences that Filipino literature majors from different geographic locations and socioeconomic backgrounds have to offer. The use of self-reported data raises the possibility of bias because participants may change their answers in response to what they think is desirable in society. Furthermore, concentrating only on modern literature restricts the investigation of historical contexts and their impact on code-switching behaviors, possibly omitting the ways in which language use has changed over time. Future studies should try to include a bigger and more varied sample that represents the experiences of students from various geographic locations, academic institutions, and socioeconomic backgrounds to address these limitations. Studies that follow subjects over time may yield important insights into how code-switching behaviors change over time and are impacted by shifting social and cultural contexts. The understanding of participants' perspectives and experiences with code-switching could be further enhanced by incorporating qualitative methods, such as focus groups or in-depth interviews. This would enable a deeper investigation of the cultural and personal significance of this practice. To better understand how code-switching works in a variety of cultural expressions, researchers could also broaden their scope to include a comparative analysis of code-switching in various literary genres or between different media, like music and film. A more thorough grasp of code-switching's effects on identity and social interaction in the Philippines might be obtained by looking into it in historical and modern contexts. In conclusion, this study lays the foundation for future research into the cultural ramifications of code- switching and advances our understanding of it as a noteworthy linguistic phenomenon in Filipino literature. Researchers can enhance the conversation on bilingualism and cultural expression by delving deeper into the intricacies of language use and how it affects Filipino narratives and identity. This can be achieved by pursuing investigations into code-switching in a variety of contexts.
