Note from the Editors 
 
Dear Readers, 

We are pleased to present Issue XXIII of Consilience: The Journal of Sustainable Development. As the COVID-
19 pandemic rages on, our attention has been focused primarily on the present; leaders and scientists around the 
world have sought to distribute a vaccine and stem the tide of the virus, employers have sought to redefine the 
workplace, and individuals have sought to protect themselves and their families from the disastrous effects of the 
virus. At the same time, political divisions in the United States have deepened, and racial inequality has been 
thrust to the forefront of American consciousness as a deeply rooted problem that remains characterized by 
violence and hatred and must be addressed. 

While it may seem as if these worries are more than sufficient to take up our time, it is more important than ever 
that we not lose sight of the future of our world. The climate crisis goes hand-in-hand with inequality and should 
be treated with the same sense of urgency. As such, the field of sustainable development, though not without its 
controversies, has emerged as a beacon of hope for the future, and can perhaps serve as a way for us to look 
beyond the fear and uncertainty of this time. We must all take responsibility for making the forthcoming year a 
year of change. 

Consilience seeks to further contribute to the global effort toward sustainability by providing engaging academic 
works from scholars around the world. The focus of the articles in Issue XXIII varies widely, from a global 
consideration of eco-nationalism to a local analysis of naturalization in an urban park in Rock Island, Illinois. The 
articles also draw from a variety of disciplines, including a scientific study of marine renewable energy, a social 
examination of ecoracism, and political evaluations of UK climate policy and U.S. national enteric emissions 
standards. 

As always, we encourage you to take a look at our Briefings column, which publishes shorter opinion pieces on 
hot-button topics. You can also subscribe to the Consilience pages on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to stay
