INTRODUCTION Environmental qualities play a fundamental role in places where one lives, works and assists a person, therefore the atmosphere of an inhabited space becomes “material”, like its walls. For this reason, the project solutions have tried to create, through the use of colour, the most coherent conditions possible both with the needs of biological and relational well-being. During the presentation of the work, we will try to explain what we mean by environmental quality and by atmosphere. The main tool used to make the rooms welcoming has been colour, since we were aware that its correct use cannot be reduced to its mere chemical performances. The colour phenomenon possesses an immaterial essence, its appearance is changeable, unstable, subject to the conditions of the context, to the light that generates it, and to the meanings that, once applied, it assumes in every perceiver. We have started from this complexity, trying to face the related difficulties. In this regard, it is significant how much David Hubel, scientist of the department of neurobiology at Harvard, still in the late eighties of the twentieth century stated; “We are far from understanding the perception of even relatively simple objects, such as a circle, a triangle or the letter A” (Hubel, DH 1989). Several years have passed and much has been clarified with regard to the phenomenon of vision, but the connected cognitive aspects still remain to be discovered. When designing for the human being, not everything that is implemented is supported by scientific literature and validated by practice, so while waiting to better understand perceptive and dynamic aspects related to specific pathologies, we have been operating by detecting at a later stage the effectiveness of what had been done through the drafting of verification protocols. 2. THE LOCATION The project regarding the perceptual configuration of the new structure annexed to the San Pietro di Monza Centre started in 2013 and ended in January 2015. The verification of the effectiveness of the chromatic/perceptive solutions has been started and is expected to be completed in the course of 2018 The new facility, with 71 beds, is dedicated to serious diseases: vegetative states, minimal consciousness, coma and ALS (amyotrophic sclerosis) and completes the range of assistance services that the Cooperative La Meridiana started in 1980 by opening the first centres dedicated to the 1. Project of the scene for a service and care facility in Monza ISSN 2384-9568 Alzheimer disease. 3. THE OBJECTIVES A) Create environments with “perceptual conditions” consistent with the needs of biological and relational well-being; B) Support the needs and tasks of: guests with strong cognitive sensory and motor limitations, family members, medical and paramedical staff in order to reduce their stress and anxiety; C) Make all users feel a sense of care. D) Host and facilitate the activities of family members in the structure. 4. THE EXPERIENCE IMPLEMENTED The applied methodology has started with listening to and interacting with all the stakeholders involved: administrative management, healthcare management, staff, volunteers and family members. Furthermore, the observation of the relationships and activities occurring in the previously existing structure have been invaluable to complete the initial information framework. The adopted architectural solutions have tried to get in tune with the programmed assistance and care protocols: this is an apparently obvious solution, but it is not always practiced. It is common to design surfaces and objects and to use sophisticated technologies, but it is less common to pay attention to the needs of those who will have to live in the premises. 5. THE PERCEPTUAL CHROMATIC PROJECT At the time of commissioning, the construction was already underway, the colour choices therefore concerned only the wall surfaces, the main furnishings, the upholstered furniture and part of the bathrooms. The project involved lobbies, common areas, rooms, as requested by the client, plus service rooms and stairwells by our own decision as they were not considered a secondary part of the perceived scene. Colour was used as an integral part of the architecture and not as mere decoration. For the common areas dedicated to family members and guests affected by ALS, colour was associated with simple scenes with the task of making the larger surfaces able to orientate and accommodate the spontaneous activities of family members. Regarding the staff, however, attention was mainly paid to the underground paths and service stairs through the configuration of simple backgrounds. In this case, the effort was to bring quality to surfaces with poor finishes and without 1980 aprendo i primi nuclei dedicati alla malattia di Alzheimer. 3. In zone definite “area del sacro”, 122 Cultura e Scienza del Colore - Color Culture and Science | 10 | 2018 | 119 - 128 Bertagna G. and Bottoli A. In areas defined as “area of the sacred”, the perceptive/chromatic project has been supplemented with some works in order to differentiate it from the contiguous service and storage areas. All interventions have been aimed at supporting the perceptive processing of the space through a more complex and compelling reading, compared to that suggested by simple walls painted with “a cheerful colour”. Colours were applied by common labour and, to facilitate frequent maintenance cycles, they have been identified through the NCS international notation. il progetto percettivo/cromatico è stato integrato con alcune opere per non assimilarlo alle contigue aree di servizio e deposito. Project of the scene for a service and care facility in Monza ISSN 2384-9568 Figure 2 - 3 The walls of the areas dedicated to family members have been configured as scenic apparatuses. A foreground, a first background semi-hidden from the foreground and an intuitive horizon, not entirely visible, to allow the viewer to rediscover his or her interior landscapes. Their configuration is designed to be always distinguishable, as it is a landscape that, although interrupted in various ways with respect to the view, remains a backdrop that helps orientation. Assodato che si possono ottenere effetti positivi offrendo un ambiente bene arredato e affacciato su un paesaggio naturale o un curato Figure 4 -The living and transit areas or those dedicated to staff have been designed with the same basic approach, to create salient areas useful both for the orientation and reinforcement of the institution’s identity. In addition to colour, art works have been included, including “The tree of enclosed lives” and “The mosaic of solidarity”. Solutions used to enhance the access to the structure. 6. PROJECT SOLUTIONS The perceptive coherence of an inhabited environment or a scene cannot be achieved through the use of a simple monochromatic hue of the walls, because it would be very far from the informative wealth to which the natural condition has accustomed us, so we have used allocations, i.e. fields designed to form one or more series of panels with depths that can be easily identified and memorised, for better orientation and for a considerable expansion of the perceived spaces. The allocations are not decorative elements, but perceptive tools able to impose their presence even if interrupted by doors, windows, pillars or corners. Those who are able to perceive the environment around them in a “normal” way, in a wall painted with a single colour, however pleasant, detects the service apparatus and the enclosing architectural casing. The perceptive design method we have adopted (Bertagna, G., Bottoli, A. 2013), through different configurations of flat backgrounds and boundary lines invites the cognitive perception of the observer to put in the background all unnecessary elements and in the foreground the scene that disrupts the wall itself, offering different depths that can be explored through imagination. (Wilson, E.O. 1985 ) In the scenes shared by perceivers with different limits, it remains to be discovered how much of the “cognitive perception”, therefore conscious, is maintained and how much it depends on what we synthesise as “instinctual perception”. In fact, the visual continuum, even if unknowingly, is always part of the perceptual continuum from which we derive positive or negative sensations, 125 Cultura e Scienza del Colore - Color Culture and Science | 10 | 2018 | 119 - 128 Colours for SLAncio. Project of the scene for a service and care facility in Monza ISSN 2384-9568 linked both to the judgment triggered by the most ancient areas of our brain responsible for immediate reaction. (Pinker, S 2000) Therefore, there is never a separation between the observer and the observed environment, even in the presence of significant cognitive deficits. Consequently, with regard to people with fragility, and subject to operating constraints, the restricted “social space” to which they are forced for reasons of care, task or role requires greater responsibility of the architectural design. In the case in question, we tried to make the architectural space, the surface finishes and the furnishings “coherent” with the regulatory aspects through a language of “tangible quality”, i.e. easily ascertainable by everyone and oriented to detect the condition of care of the components more than the aesthetic values. Given that positive effects can be achieved by offering a well-furnished environment overlooking a natural landscape or a well- kept garden, (Wilson, EO 1985) we believe it is possible to give quality to the walls of all enclosed spaces that do not enjoy architectural quality or do not overlook a bright exterior. It is a matter of guaranteeing compensatory psycho- perceptive values that are able to respond to specific needs: human beings, due to an ancestral instinct to control their territory, tend to analyse repeatedly the farthest point from the place where they are. Then their attention turns back to what remains between them and what we might call their “relative horizon” (Rositani Ronchi, L. 2006). All the elements of this visual space, such as surfaces, furnishings, objects, signs, paintings, play their own role and are organised, spontaneously, in levels of depth. We consider a level of depth the place of the different elements of the scene that are placed at the same distance from the observer or that can be aggregated by homogeneity of their components. (Rositani Ronchi, L. 2006) Through the levels of depth, the observer obtains the information necessary to understand his or her position within the environmental context (environmental proprioception), be it natural or artificial. Moving within the context will lead to variations, but despite the variations in visual angle and distance, exactly through these the recognisability of the place will be maintained. (Rositani Ronchi, L., Villani, S 1998) Variations in configuration are the basis of learning the scene and provide the information necessary for orientation. In short, the difference between traditional forms of decoration and the perceptual devices adopted in our case consists in the fact that decorative solutions, usually, are not led by a study of the perceptual modes of the users, but by formal habits and stylistic features. Queste tre caratteristiche dei dispositivi percettivi da noi ideati, trovano ispirazione nello studio dei meccanismi neurofisiologici e psicologici che regolano le emozioni e le risposte 126 Cultura e Scienza del Colore - Color Culture and Science | 10 | 2018 | 119 - 128 Bertagna G. and Bottoli A. ISSN 2384-9568 DOI: 10.23738/ccsj.i102018.13 decorative system due to three characteristics: • The attentional engagement of the subject through visual focus points linked to each other. • The creation of particular, recognisable and memorable scenes, which unites different environments, giving them an unambiguous and distinguishable identity. • The introduction of shape variations within a graphic and chromatic system recognisable as univocal. These three characteristics of the perceptive devices we have devised draw inspiration from the study of the neurophysiological and psychological mechanisms that regulate the emotions and the behavioural responses of the subjects. comportamentali dei soggetti. 7. Ora Figure 5 - 6 The solutions adopted for the rooms have taken into consideration the presence of electro-medical devices, trying to contrast their presence through saturated colours and evident border lines. An attempt was made to create an evocative iconic landscape aimed particularly at family members who remain in the room for a long time, but cannot communicate with their relative due to the pathology of the patient. They are silent rooms, where colour has the task of adding “vitality”. This allocation mode is being verified in relation to maintenance cycles and the possibility of using coating materials instead of paint products. 7. CONCLUSIONS The awareness that architecture is capable of generating emotions has helped us design more carefully the spaces dedicated to accommodate a perceiver who can be generally considered in conditions of fragility. Fragility of those who are affected by more or less severe cognitive deficits and by the progression of the disease, but also of the family members who miss the person they once knew and, to another extent, also of those subjected to particularly demanding working conditions from the psychological and physical standpoint. We are aware that environmental qualities cannot be the only healing factor, but certainly they can positively affect the homeostasis of their beneficiaries. It has been a long work, in part still to be completed, from which, after a few years, interesting data begins to emerge, that validate the design choices. Now we trust that the first relevant protocols put in place can also certify them. 127 Cultura e Scienza del Colore - Color Culture and Science | 10 | 2018 | 119 - 128 Colours for SLAncio. Figure 7 - Traumas that lead to comatose states also occur to very young people, so there is often the presence of very young children visiting siblings or parents. The evocative scene plays the role of signalling the playing space: the storage unit is not simply placed close to the wall, but is incorporated into the space. Within 6/8 meters, colours with a lower relative frequency come to the foreground and colours with greater relative frequency go into the background, so the two side wings and the pattern that contains the piece of furniture become a close-up, then the beach and, finally, the distant landscape. This research has not received any specific funding from public, commercial or non-profit agencies.
