EDITORIAL

It is my pleasure to join the team of contributors to Education Libraries as Assistant Editor. This 

is an exciting time of transition for libraries and librarians as technological developments continue to 
explode and we become more deeply involved in a rapidly emerging digital world. Indeed, the theme 

of the Annual SLA Conference held in Seattle in June of 1 997, centered on change as opportunity. 
This issue includes papers that were given at that conference. 

Two informative statistics papers were presented, but only one was submitted for publication. 
We are grateful to Dr. Vance Grant for his comprehensive survey of helpful statistical guides relating 
to American education. Marlene Lloyd, a Library Studies student, prepared the bibliography for this 

article as part of her course of study. • 
Anne Galler's paper is a follow-up to the successful international librarianship presentation of 

1 996. It deals with selected education collections around the world. Another Library Studies student, 
Annie Tetreault, assisted in the preparation of this article by searching the Internet for appropriate 

entries. Unfortunately a related paper on education libraries in Europe by Diann Rusch-Feja has 
been delayed due to circumstances beyond our control. We look forward to its inclusion in a future 
issue of Education Libraries. 

A third article, by Sarah Sully, describes the function of the JSTOR database and emphasizes 
further the changes occurring in the information world. Important scholarly literature is being digitized 
daily in order to meet the needs of students and researchers. 

In the final article, Laura Gasaway discusses copyright issues that have arisen as the domain of 
digital archives expands. As Professor of Law and Director of the Law Library at the University of 
North Carolina, she is well qualified to present her views on this topic. 

Lastly we acknowledge the departure of Carol Mitchell who has resigned after many years of 
dedicated service as Assistant Editor of this publication. The Editorial Board regrettably accepts her 
decision and extends sincere appreciation for a job well done. Good wishes are extended to Carol in 

her future undertakings.
