Since its beginnings in 1974, SOFSEM has been a forum for active and leading computer scientists. SOFSEM 2017 took place in Limerick, Ireland and was hosted by Lero - The Irish Software Research Centre. SOFSEM has a long tradition of including a Student Research Forum (SRF) which provides young researchers with an opportunity to discuss their research with the scientific community, get valuable scientific feedback and establish collaborations. In SRF 2017, Master and PhD students were invited to present their research ideas and projects in the form of a research proposal. The participants were selected based on a) the relevance of the research to the scope of the conference; b) quality of the research proposal; and, c) stage of the research (to ensure diversity of submissions from students that might be at their very first research submission or at the end of their Master’s/PhD). The Student Research Forum was held as a combination of presentations and poster sessions. Best Student Presentation and Best Poster were awarded during the conference. First prize “Best Student Presentation Award” kindly sponsored by the Slovak Society for Computer Science, went to Mr Predrag Filipovikj, Doctoral Student, Mälardalen University. Second prize “Best Poster Award”, kindly sponsored by Springer, went to Mr Dennis Kühn, Doctoral Student, University of Limerick. This volume contains the post-proceedings of the Student Research Forum 2017 and the Early Career Researcher Tutorial presented during SOFSEM 2017. The four papers contained in this volume are the result of a selection and reviewing process that started with a total of six contributions. I thank the authors for their contributions, including those whose papers could not be included in this issue. I also express my deep gratitude to all the expert reviewers for their insightful and rigorous work, which was essential to ensure the high-quality content.
