Speech is one of presentational information in oral format which can be needs to have the 21st century skill. Language of speech distinguishes grammatical moods. The speeches in the top 10 finalists of Miss Grand International 2020 was chosen to analyze the realization of speech functions and mood system. Non-participatory observation, selecting the media and classifying the subject of the research, and literature review were steps to collect the data. Analysis data was interpreted and reported in qualitative procedures. It was illuminated that the finalist of Malaysia mostly showed offer among other finalists. The finalist of Guatemala delivered mostly the command. The finalist of Indonesia was counted as the most produced statement. The questions were produced mostly by the finalist of Malaysia and the finalist of Argentina. The use of declarative mood was mostly made by the finalist of Malaysia. The polar interrogative was turned by the finalist of Argentina. Moreover, the imperative was mostly produced by the finalist of Czech Republic. Thus, the statement of speech functions was congruent with declarative of mood system. Likewise, command showed the congruency of imperative. Implementing speech in the English classroom can build students’ confidence and interest in enhancing their public speaking skill. Furthermore, the research under topic speech in the pageant can help to analyze someone’s culture from the speech pattern, accents, vocabulary, and dialect. By this way, the research was conducted to be beneficial for learning language development. Correspondence Address: Kampus Universitas Negeri Semarang, Kelud, Semarang, 50233 E-mail : tomywidiyanto@students.unnes.ac.id p-ISSN 2087-0108 e-ISSN 2502-4566 INTRODUCTION Tomy Widiyanto, et al./ English Education Journal 12 (3) (2022) 373-380 374 Entering the digital age, communication is a skill to be part of needs to have in the 21st century. It can be interpersonal which is a two- way interaction with someone else, interpretive which understands and interprets a one-way written text, or presentational which presents information in either a written or spoken format. Communication is more than a skill but it is a foundation for learning. It is real that communication pushes critical thinking by allowing the visualization of a student’s thinking and thinking of others. Communication skill is useful for students to identify the source of accurate information, filter information as new knowledge, and make the information as additional knowledge within the development itself. Language is important for human especially about how to communicate with others by appropriate ways. Using language appropriately becomes a very important matter in delivering meanings, messages and information to others both through written and spoken media. Speech can be included as language of spoken media. Language is used by people to construct and transfer information such as to know more about places, lifestyles, diverse culture, and to express opinion, idea, feeling, even related aspects of human life in carry out their daily routines, for example signs, symbols, or spoken words either between someone who speaks the same language or across countries and cultures as stated by Sapir (1921). Furthermore, a language is also done to convey idea such as statement, question, offer, and command which will use the terms of sentences. In relation to speaking skill as the important aspect of language communication, a discourse study enables to build relationship among others how language is used in real life situations. According to Eggins (1997), discourse study is a multi-disciplinary approach that covers sociology, sociolinguistics, philosophy, artificial intelligence, and linguistics. Meanwhile, the study of the relationship between language and its function in social settings is known as Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). All languages are organized around three main kinds of fundamental meanings such as ideational meaning, interpersonal meaning, and textual meaning. According to Eggins (2004), speech as communication skill is one of speaking activities that belongs to interpersonal meaning. Language of speech frequently distinguishes grammatically speech functions and moods. Martin (1997) defines speech function as a semantic aspect of meaning which is realized by mood at level of lexicogrammar. The mood in English is realized by the elements of subject and finite. In this case, all the speech functions should be coded by three moods namely declarative, interrogative, and imperative. According to Gerot (2001), mood in English is realized by the position in the clause of the subject and finite. By this way, it is important to comprehend the meaning of speeches and identify its strength and weakness by concerning with the theory of Halliday (2004) which was to investigate the realization of speech functions and mood system at international beauty pageant speech. It gave a role model how to deliver speech approriately by using good gesture, context and culture, different style language use, and full confident. Moreover, it is a suitable example for students to stimulate and construct their speaking ability as an interesting issue of different cultural perspectives. By implementing speech in the English classroom, it can build students’ confidence and interest in enhancing their public speaking skill. Furthermore, the research under topic speech in the beauty pageant can help to analyze someone’s culture from the speech pattern, accents, vocabulary, and dialect. By this way, the research was conducted to be beneficial for learning language development. There were some research that described the types of speech function and interpersonal roles conducted by Ridha (2013), Martanto (2014), Arif (2015), Tritama (2017), Suhartini (2017), Artha (2018), Fajar (2019), Nasution (2019), Batubara (2020), and they focused on analyzing the speech fucntions’ use between human in daily life. It showed that there are 10 types of speech functions such as statement, answer, question, acknowledgement, contradiction, command, offer, disclaimer rejection, and acceptance (Martanto, 2014). Unfortunately, that previous research did not explain about the realization of mood system. Beside that, the context of the previous research and the researcher’s are not similar. The context of previous research also occurred in a literary work a movie. In Syamsiyah (2018), in analyzing speech function of utterances in Beauty and the Beast movie script by Bill Condon showed that there was only 1% for offer realized. For example: shall I give you this teapot? It means the utterance is to give an offer by initiation. Furthermore, a research conducted by Sulistyowati (2012), investigated speech function realization in the conversation between the fourth semester English and department students of Muria Kudus Univeristy and some foreigner showed that speech functions of opening in statements are mostly produced by the students. It indicates that the students played as the initiators. The researchers have not found any similar research that investigated the mood stypes Tomy Widiyanto, et al./ English Education Journal 12 (3) (2022) 373-380 375 realized in the context of beauty pageant’s speech. It can be proved that there were researchers conducted the research under topic mood system; Sujatna (2013), Fikri (2014), Anne (2017), Yoga (2017), Astuti (2018), Faliyanti (2018), Rianda (2019), Ulya (2019), Colle (2020), Putri (2020), Rustipa (2020), and Puspitasari (2021). Yeibo (2011) stated that the sentence can be used to approve or disapprove, to express doubt, to ask questions or give answers; to greet, instruct, or to command others. These various uses or functions of the sentence correspond to grammatical categories which are called declarative (statement sentence): imperative (commands, requests) and exclamatory (exclamative). It related with the research revealed the dominant process type in the scripted drama and also aims to explain the pedagogical implications of the mood analysis (Ulya, 2019). In her research, she analyzed mood system on English script drama of Peter Pan Story by J.M Barrie. In her research was found 4% imperative mood and the declarative mood was dominantly used in composing the script drama which has found 80%. One of examples of the imperative mood appeared in Ulya’s research was open the book!. The word open indicated a s a finite, then the book! included complement. It was different with the research conducted by Rustipa (2020), the interrogative mood both polar and WH- Questions did not exist in it. A clause without sense of uncertainty by asking a question cannot be said an interrogative clause. This was found in the article that analyzed by Rustipa, she did not find any clause begun by an auxiliary verb and then followed by subject plus a main verb in the whole text. Therefore, in her study there was no any interrogative mood realized. After reviewing previous reseach, it can be seen that most of research on speech function and mood sytem is mostly concerned with teaching language uses, movies, and interaction of human in real life. However, analyzing speech function and mood system to teach students how to commmunicate well in English is also important in the context of teaching speech in different context which is speeches at beauty pageant. Normally, speech function can be found in the conversation. Sutopo (2013) stated that the speech of beauty pageant can be a good example of analyzing speech functions and mood system realization because there are no previous researchers conducted the research of analyzing speech function and mood system in the beauty pageant context. Not only because of the way to deliver the message, the speech function and mood system in the speech of beauty pageant have particular meaning and always well- organized speech. The researcher chose the speech in the beauty pageant of Miss Grand International is because this pageant belongs to one of three major international beauty pageants in the world and Indonesia had ever won this competition for the very first time in 2016 by Ariska Putri Pertiwi from Medan, North Sumatra. This research focused on the speech function and mood system of top 10 finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020. Therefore, the scope of this research was related to the speech delivered by the top 10 finalists in the top 10 round of Miss Grand International competition in 2020 held in Bangkok, Thailand. Based on the observations, there are no reserchers who have studied about speech function and mood system in beauty pageant context by concerning with the theory of Halliday (2004). To reach a comprehensive analysis, this study intended to obtain answers of the questions: (1) How is the realization of speech functions in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020?; (1.a) How is the realization of offer in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020?; (1.b) How is the realization of command in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020?; (1.c) How is the realization of statement in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020?; (1.d) How is the realization of question in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020?; (2) How is the realization of mood system in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020?; (2.a) How is the realization of declarative in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020?; (2.b) How is the realization of interrogative in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020?; (2.c) How is the realization of imperative in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020?; (3) How is the relation between speech functions and mood system realized in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020? METHODS In order to conduct this research, the researchers observed a complete speech video of the top 10 finalists round in beauty pageant of Miss Grand International 2020 to analyze and describe the speech function and mood system realized in the top 10 finalists’ speech. In this research, the researchers used three steps to Tomy Widiyanto, et al./ English Education Journal 12 (3) (2022) 373-380 376 collect the data of the research, they are non- participatory observation, selecting the media and classifying the subject of the research, and literature review. Non-participatory observation was carried out since the researchers could not directly participate due to the pandemic of Covid- 19 from the beginning of May 2020 to the year of 2021.The researchers prepared and organized the data. This step used collection a complete speech video of the top 10 finalists in beauty pageant of Miss Grand International 2020. The video was taken from Youtube. It was retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZXYZ5F uJM0. The report of the research described the types of speech function, such as offer, command, statement, and question. In addition, to report the types of mood, there are two majors which are indicative mood and imperative mood. The indicative itself consist of declarative and interrogative. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS After analyzing the data, the researchers tried to summarize the finding into the table before giving the interpretation. The goals of the tables are to make the readers understand the realization of speech function and mood system in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International Beauty pageant 2020 and how they are dominant in the kind of speech function and mood system. The description is explained as follow. Table 1. The Summary of Speech Functions Speech Functions Name Coun try State ment Que stion Com mand Of fer Marian a Jessica Varela Arge ntina 4 3 2 1 Alaise Clemen tino Guedes Brazil 6 - 2 - Denisa Sperger ova Czec h Repu blic 5 - 1 - Ivana Batchel or Guat emala 5 1 3 - Aurra Kharis hma Islami Indon esia 9 2 - - Jasebel Shalani Robert Mala ysia 6 3 - 2 Samant ha Mae Bernar do Philip pines 7 - 1 1 Fabiola Valenti n Gonzal ez Puert o Rico 7 - 1 - Patchar aporn Chanta rapadit Namfo n Thail and 8 - - - Evelyn Abena Kuaba Appiah USA 7 - 2 1 Based on Table 1, it can be concluded that the finalist used their power when they used those four kinds of speech functions which were statement, offer, question and command. Those four kinds of speech functions are used by the finalist more than the audience expected in listening to the top 10 round of Miss Grand International Beauty pageant 2020. It can be seen from the use of those speech functions in the speech utterances. The finalists have the right or power to deliver statement, offer, question, and command in conveying the speech. The audience and the juries have an obligation or responsibility to do or answer what the finalist expected. Tomy Widiyanto, et al./ English Education Journal 12 (3) (2022) 373-380 377 This research also discovered that the use of speech function types delivered by the finalists in the round of giving speeches, the finalists tried to make sure and invited audience how they convinced with their speeches which contained meaningful messages so that the audience can feel the impact and know which the finalist who had pure and sincere purpose to be the winner as a beauty queen that relates with the mission of Miss Grand International organization. The realization of speech function is dominantly statement which delivered by the Asian finalists, including Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. The realization between speech functions and mood system in the speeches of top 10 finalists in Miss Grand International beauty pageant 2020 can be inferred that some terms such as declarative is similar with statement, questions are same with the interrogative, and command is similar with imperative sentence. The summary of mood system can be seen in Table 2. Table 2. The Summary of Mood System Mood System Name Count ry Indicative Imper ative Decla rative Interrog ative Po lar W H Marian a Jessica Varela Argen tina 5 3 - 2 Alaise Clemen tino Guedes Brazil 10 - - 3 Denisa Sperger ova Czech Repu blic 4 - - 1 Ivana Batchel or Guate mala 5 - - 2 Aurra Kharish ma Islami Indon esia 8 - - 3 Jasebel Shalani Robert Mala ysia 15 - - - Samant ha Mae Bernard o Philip pines 9 - - 3 Fabiola Valenti n Gonzal ez Puert o Rico 7 - - 1 Patchar aporn Chantar apadit Namfo n Thail and 5 - - - Evelyn Abena Kuaba Appiah USA 9 - - 1 This research showed that the indicative mood of declarative is mostly appeared in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020. The finalist from Malaysia dominantly stated declarative among the other finalists in the round of top ten at Miss Grand International 2020. While, the least declarative mood was stated by the finalist from Czech Republic which were only four moves. In the term of interrogative mood, it was only the type of polar question that delivered by the finalist that is from Argentina. She stated three polar questions. The imperative mood in this research was shown by the finalist from Czech Republic who the most delivered and the least ones are the finalists from Puerto Rico and USA. According to the whole analysis, the researchers have the conclusions related to what the speech function and mood system realized in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International Beauty pageant 2020. First, Indonesia that was represented by Aurra Kharishma Islami counted the most produced statement among the other finalists, then followed by the finalist from Thailand who Tomy Widiyanto, et al./ English Education Journal 12 (3) (2022) 373-380 378 named Patcharaporn Chantarapadit Namfon. She stated in her speech number of eight statements. A number of seven statements were delivered by the finalist form Philippines, the finalist from Puerto Rico, and the finalist from USA. In addition, there were six statements conveyed by the finalist from Brazil which they are more than the finalist from Czech Republic namely Denisa Spergerov and the finalist from Guatemala namely Ivana Batchelor. Both of them delivered five statements in their speech. The distinguish between Denisa Spergerov’s statement and Ivana Batchelor’s statements are Denisa emphasized keeping peace and preventing war and violence. Meanwhile, Ivana Batchelor’s statements underlined the struggle of life to fight the pressures and adversity of facing problems to keep hand in hand and to help each other. Second, the type of speech function in the term of question was mostly delivered by Jasebel Shalani Robert from Malaysia and Mariana Jessica Varela from Argentina. The differences between both of them are the finalist from Argentina raised the question to make sure the audience in order to pay attention to her speech. It was conveyed in the beginning of her speech. Besides, the finalist from Malaysia asked the audience when people should stop the war and violence if they cannot stand together as human. She emphasized to ask audience to do not put forward the nationality, religion, gender, and sexuality. By standing in the Miss Grand International stage as the finalist, she asked to stop the war and change mentality in order to be stronger than anything because of love and compassion. Third, the command as the type of speech function was delivered mostly by Ivana Batchelor from Guatemala. She produced three commands in her speech which pointed to let audience keep being together in order to be victorious. The other finalists that produced less than Ivana Batchelor are the finalists with two commands in their speech, they are Mariana Jessica Varela, Alaise Clementino Guedes, and Evelyn Abeena Kuaba Appiah. There are four finalists produced only one command, such as Denisa Spergerova, Samantha Mae Bernardo, and Fabiola Valentin Gonzalez. Denisa Spergerova stated her command to spread love not hate. It means she wanted audience aware about harmony in life raising up love, peace and stopping the war. The next command was delivered by Samantha Mae Bernardo that she asked audience to join with her if she became the winner of Miss Grand International 2020 to work together in mending our conflict. Forth, Jasebel Shalani Robert as the finalist from Malaysia, mostly produced two clauses of offer in the term of speech function types which including the most delivered among the other finalists. The other finalists from Brazil, Philippines, and USA are produced similarly which is only a clause of offer in their own speech. The finalist from Brazil offered the audience as she would be the winner of beauty queen in the Miss Grand International to dedicate not only for organization but also to be ready to serve people getting better life, taking care people health, and believing people faith to not lose hope. Meanwhile, the finalist from Philippines offered in her speech if she becomes a beauty queen of Miss Grand International, she will be a communicator of hope, compassion, and unity, besides she is ready to stand for stopping any violence and war in this world. Then, the use of declarative mood indicates is mostly made by Jasebel Shalani Robert, the finalist from Malaysia produced a number of 15 utterance clauses. The least declarative of mood system was produced by Denisa Spergerova from Czech Republic with four declaratives. The polar interrogative of mood system are three sentences while the use of WH questions of indicative mood cannot be counted because there is nothing in every finalist’s speech. In addition, the imperative sentences were produced by Denisa Spergerova from Malaysia. The least imperative produced by Fabiola Valentin Gonzales from and Evelyn Abena Kuaba from USA. The structure in the terms between speech functions and mood system can be initiated become congruent and incongruent. In speech function context, the clause indicates Tomy Widiyanto, et al./ English Education Journal 12 (3) (2022) 373-380 379 affirmative clause called statement which is similar sense in the context of declarative in mood types. Meanwhile, the command in the speech function has same structure in term of imperative of mood types. CONCLUSIONS Based on the analysis, the statements as speech function in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020 are congruent, because the utterances have the same typical in mood types in the clauses that is declarative. It means that the mood types of declarative show the congruency of statement as initiating speech function. In addition, it can also be known that commands as speech function in the finalists’ speeches at Miss Grand International pageant 2020 are congruent. It is also because they have similar type of mood as imperative. This study needs future studies to enrich the findings. They can conduct studies focusing on speech functions and mood system in any speech context. They also can conduct studies focusing on systemic functional linguistic theory in any language context of pageantry. REFERENCES Anne, T. (2017).
