ENGLISH FRANCA : Academic Journal of English Language and Education, 8(1 May), 1-12. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.29240/ef.v8i1 May.9958 Introduction Technology plays a vital role in education by facilitating learning, teaching, and accessing information efficiently. Easy access to various sources of information enables teachers and students to utilize e-books, journals, instructional videos, and global educational resources. Digital learning, simulations, interactive activities, and educational games offer effective alternatives. Collaborative tools such as Google Workspace and Microsoft Teams support student collaboration locally and internationally. Technologies like online platforms and video conferencing facilitate distance learning. The educational transformation by technology includes personalized learning, automated assessment, inclusive education, educational data management, and the development of technology skills, shaping our interaction with knowledge in the digital era. Media in the learning process will make learning more enjoyable and of higher quality (Ardiansyah & Nana, 2020). Technology plays a major role in enhancing English language skills, particularly in pronunciation. Applications such as "Elsa Speak" and "SpeechAce" on mobile devices provide pronunciation exercises with immediate feedback. Online learning platforms like Duolingo and Rosetta Stone also include pronunciation exercises with voice recording technology and automatic feedback. Online resources like YouTube and BBC Learning English offer videos and audio with various accents to enrich learning experiences. Voice recording and feedback apps, including online classes and tutors, use video conferencing technology and web-based platforms to provide direct pronunciation lessons. The development of Virtual Reality (VR) technology opens up new opportunities in pronunciation Abstract. This research aims to explore English students' views regarding the usage of social media platforms like YouTube, specifically the "The Wizardliz" channel, in enhancing students' pronunciation. This study seeks to investigate students' perceptions of using YouTube videos to improve English language learning and to determine if YouTube videos can be utilized to enhance English pronunciation. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, sampling students of English education at a public university, using questionnaires and interview instruments. Data collection is conducted through questionnaires. Qualitative data analysis is used in this research. The results indicate that students' views of using YouTube videos, particularly the "The Wizardliz" channel, to enhance pronunciation are highly effective. The questionnaire results, consisting of 11 items, show that the average views score of students is 50% in the "Strongly Agree" category and 49.93% in the "Agree" category. Based on these findings, YouTube videos can be considered a productive and effective medium beneficial for improving English pronunciation. Keywords: Views YouTube Videos, Pronunciation mailto:nuharana170502@gmail.com http://dx.doi.org/10.29240/ef.v8i1%20May.9958 Rana & Daulay, 2024 English Students' Views toward the Use Youtube in Improving Students' Pronunciation 2 | V o l . 8 , N o . 1 , 2 0 2 4 ( 1 - 1 2 ) training by allowing users to practice in real-life situations. Some applications use artificial intelligence to customize exercises based on individual needs, providing access to diverse resources and interactive exercises, as well as providing significant feedback to improve English pronunciation skills. One example is the feature on the YouTube application. As suggested by Baskoro (in Samosir et al., 2018), YouTube is one of the digital media sites in the form of videos that can be downloaded, uploaded, and shared nationwide. For enhanced learning, students need effective tools. One of them is YouTube, which allows flexible access and good material visualization. Through YouTube, students can access free video clips to learn pronunciation. Riswandi (2016) states that YouTube is a good alternative to improve students' pronunciation learning. YouTube plays a crucial role in English pronunciation learning and other languages. English teachers and native speakers provide instructional videos and tutorials focusing on pronunciation, providing step-by-step guidance and exercises to improve learners' pronunciation skills. The platform also provides access to various accents and pronunciation variations through videos introducing sound models relevant to daily situations. Many content creators help learners understand pronunciation contexts in real life and enrich their understanding of accents and intonation. Entertainment and lifestyle videos use simple words for pronunciation learning and features like subtitles and translations make it easier for learners to access and understand the material. Communities and discussions in video comments provide opportunities for learners to share experiences and receive feedback. By utilizing all of these resources, learners can effectively improve their pronunciation skills through consistent practice. According to Aleksandrzak (2011), common problems faced by students in the speaking learning process include barriers, fear of making mistakes, use of the native language, and having nothing to say. Students want to speak English, but sometimes they find it difficult to do so. Therefore, these common problems faced by students should be addressed to achieve success in speaking learning. To succeed in the learning process, students need effective media or tools to assist them. One of the media that students can use for speaking learning is YouTube. The use of this media provides several advantages, including accessibility anytime and anywhere, as one of the internet-based learning support media that can visualize techniques and learning materials well. Through YouTube, learners can upload, watch, and share video clips for free. According to Maskar & Dewi (2020); and E. Putri & Sari (2020), YouTube is a video-sharing site where users can upload, share, and watch videos. It uses Adobe Flash Video technology to display a wide range of user- generated video content, including movie clips, TV clips, and music videos, as well as amateur content such as video blogs and short original videos. Content creators on YouTube prioritize creativity and sharing skills, not just creating content. The Wizard Liz, a prominent YouTuber, has gained significant recognition and popularity for her diverse content, including gaming, technology reviews, lifestyle vlogs, providing highly relatable life motivation, and sharing quotes in her videos. Her success is achieved through her charismatic on-screen presence, genuine passion for her content, consistent upload schedule, and high-quality production values. YouTube videos like hers can help students of English and non-English majors understand and emulate the pronunciation of each English word according to native speakers, thus boosting students' confidence in speaking English. The Wizard Liz's dedication to her work and a strong sense of community among her viewers has solidified her position as a respected content creator. Balbay and Kilis (2017) demonstrate that students are already very familiar with YouTube as a learning resource, both for entertainment and self-improvement. This finding is consistent with the research of Zaidi and Ibrahim (2018), which highlights YouTube as a worthy, innovative, and authentic teaching resource, especially in the context of English language learning. Thus, it can be concluded that YouTube has helped students improve their speaking skills, as demonstrated by the research of Saraswati, Putri Yaniafari, and El Khoiri (2021), which emphasizes the platform's role in enhancing students' vocabulary Rana & Daulay, 2024 English Students' Views toward the Use Youtube in Improving Students' Pronunciation 3 | V o l . 8 , N o . 1 , 2 0 2 4 ( 1 - 1 2 ) and pronunciation skills. Therefore, the literature consistently indicates that YouTube plays a significant role in the educational context, particularly in the development of speaking skills. The main goal of learning English is to be able to communicate effectively with correct pronunciation. However, communicating in a non-native language is often considered difficult and encounters many obstacles. Mastering a new language, in this case, English, is not an easy task. Therefore, one important aspect to consider is the teaching aspect of English in the classroom. One of them is the use of open materials. According to researchers, communicative materials will facilitate students in absorbing lesson materials. Based on the above facts, the author argues that there needs to be a breakthrough in efforts to improve the quality of English language education. Therefore, the researcher raises the title "Students' Views of the Use of Social Media from YouTube Applications Such as "The Wizardliz" Channel in Improving Student Pronunciation." This study aims to determine the perceptions of English language students towards The Wizardliz channel in improving student pronunciation. Theoretical Framework Figure 1. Biological process that takes place in the human’s brain Views are a biological process that takes place in the human’s brain. It is a process that concerns about the entry of messages or information through five senses, namely the Perception as a Biological Process - Five Senses - Selective Attention - Individual Values, Needs, and Past Experiences - Characteristics of the Object (Slameto, 2020; Iska, 2020) Pronunciation in Language Learning - Production of Word Sounds - Challenges in Learning English (Red & Leviz, 2019) Social Media as a Tool for Language Learning - Facilitates Interaction and Communication - Building Personal Profiles - Marketing Purposes - (Ardiansah & Maharani, 2021) - Example: "Thewizardliz" - YouTube Channel (2023) Integrated Learning Approach - Utilize social media - Improve perception and pronunciation - Leverage engaging content Rana & Daulay, 2024 English Students' Views toward the Use Youtube in Improving Students' Pronunciation 4 | V o l . 8 , N o . 1 , 2 0 2 4 ( 1 - 1 2 ) sense of sight, sense of hearing, sense of smell, sense of taste, and sense of touch (Slameto, 2020). According to Iska (2020), factors that influence views are; first is selective attention. As humans encounter many stimuli from our setting, we do not respond to all the stimuli. Thus, humans only focus or give attention to any stimulus. The next factor is the individual‟ 's values and needs and past experiences. Everybody has their background and values which influence the perception process. Third is the characteristics of the object such as motion, sounds, size, proximity, etc. Big things can be more interesting than small ones to be perceived. Pronunciation is how we utter or produce the sound of words. When learning the language English, one of the most difficult subjects, in addition to grammar and words (vocabulary), is pronunciation. (Red and Leviz,2019). According to (Ardiansah and Maharani,2021) social media is a means or forum used to facilitate interaction between fellow users and has the nature of two-way communication, social media is also often used to build a person's self-image or profile, and can also be utilized by companies as media. marketing. Using social media as a marketing medium can be done by uploading photos to social media accounts such as going to YouTube and then it can be seen by consumers who follow the YouTube account. Thewizardliz is an English-language channel with the concept of a woman sitting and telling a story as if giving advice. This channel contains the experiences of a woman named Liz. Liz, on her YouTube channel, discusses more about self-development and mental health. This channel is very suitable for you to watch because Liz herself provides English subtitles for every uploaded video. So, you can more easily understand what is being said. (2023) Materials and Method In this research, researchers chose to use qualitative methods. This approach, as explained by Aspers and Corte (2019), emphasizes a variety of techniques and provides an interpretive and naturalistic approach to the material investigated. Therefore, this study has the qualitative purpose of discovering the students‟ perception of the use of social media such as the YouTube channel”Thewizaldliz" to improve English pronunciation skills, including the kinds of applications they have been using, their behaviors using social media for improving English pronunciation skill as well as the usefulness and challenges they faced on using social media. The data of this research was collected by distributing questionnaires and conducting interviews. The results of questionnaires and interviews from the participants will be displayed descriptively to answer the research questions. The qualitative research process involves a series of important steps, including formulating questions and procedures, collecting specific data from participants, conducting inductive data analysis from specific findings to general findings, and interpreting the meaning contained in the data. The definition of qualitative research according to Yanuar (2017) means an investigative method that explores various empirical traditions, studying social or humanitarian problems with varied approaches. This research aims to explain how students perceive the use of the YouTube application in learning English pronunciation. There are two approaches used in this research. The method for selecting research subjects is as follows: The author asked for recommendations from the English lecturer at University A in selecting research participants. The researcher then selected students majoring in English consisting of 40 students (23 male students and 28 female students). This is based on several considerations. First, the author got to know the students well when doing teaching practice there. Second, students are social media users and have gadgets so they have a lot of experience in using social media for learning. Third, the teacher recommended eleventh grade because of her belief that students would participate in research cooperatively. fourth, the researcher invited students to watch the YouTube channel "The Wildzarliz" for a few minutes. Fifth, after watching the YouTube channel "The Widzarliz", researchers distributed questionnaires to students. This research instrument uses interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. After that, all the data is analyzed and Rana & Daulay, 2024 English Students' Views toward the Use Youtube in Improving Students' Pronunciation 5 | V o l . 8 , N o . 1 , 2 0 2 4 ( 1 - 1 2 ) described. This research uses purposive sampling to select questionnaire respondents and interview participants. The total population involved was 33 students, with 30 of them participating in the research and 3 other students conducting interviews. Results and Discussion Results This section presents the results of the study. It indicates the results of the study's pattern responses to questionnaire items. The outcome of the field study is interpreted based on the research question. After offering the results in the table, the findings are discussed and related to the literature and previous research that addresses the study's topic. Table 1. Based on the conclusion drawn from the third respondent's answer, YouTube is considered a more engaging and effective learning source compared to traditional learning methods, which consistently aligns with the findings in the research by Zaidi and Ibrahim (2018). Their study highlighted YouTube as a credible, innovative, and authentic teaching resource, especially in the context of English language learning. As stated by the respondent, YouTube offers various innovative learning experiences that enrich the learning process, including content from channels like Thewizardliz. Although not specifically focused on English language learning, such YouTube content provides additional knowledge about correct and appropriate English pronunciation, in line with the findings of Zaidi and Ibrahim's research. Additionally, the flexibility offered by YouTube in revisiting difficult-to-understand material is also highlighted by the respondent, which is a feature that strengthens YouTube's advantages as a learning resource. In conclusion, the findings from this research support and align with the research by Zaidi and Ibrahim (2018) regarding the role of YouTube as an effective learning resource in English language learning, particularly in English pronunciation. Statement 10, Based on the survey results, the majority of respondents (83.3%) agree or strongly agree that learning pronunciation through the YouTube channel "Thewizardliz" helps them adjust the pronunciation of each English word. This finding is consistent with the concept that pronunciation is one of the key components in spoken language crucial for effective communication. Pronunciation not only relates to how someone speaks but also involves clarity in conveying meaning. The definition of pronunciation as the process of producing language sounds underscores the importance of practice and correction to rectify pronunciation errors. In the context of pronunciation learning, improving the pronunciation of each word helps learners form new habits and overcome difficulties that may arise from the influence of their first language, in line with the views of Cook and Yates as expressed in Gilakjani (2016). Statement 11, Based on the survey data, the majority of respondents (80%) indicate or strongly agree that learning pronunciation through the YouTube channel "Thewizardliz" is beneficial for them in adjusting the pronunciation of each English word. This finding demonstrates a strong recognition of the effectiveness of the channel in helping respondents improve their English pronunciation. Articulation in pronunciation is a physical process where one uses organs in the mouth, throat, and nose to produce sounds or speech. With good articulation, one can pronounce words clearly and accurately so that the message or information can be well understood by listeners. Therefore, in the context of pronunciation learning, good articulation is crucial to ensure that words are pronounced correctly and can be understood clearly. Thus, the YouTube channel "Thewizardliz" can significantly contribute to the development of articulation skills and pronunciation learning in English. Conclusion Many students have a positive view of the role of YouTube in improving their pronunciation. The majority of them state that YouTube is effective in enhancing their pronunciation skills, especially by watching the channel "Thewizardliz," which is a YouTuber that provides engaging videos that attract students to watch, try to follow, and learn pronunciation. These videos can also help expand vocabulary and improve pronunciation skills, consistent with the findings of the questionnaire. YouTube is considered a valuable tool for learning. The results of this study can be used as a reference for future researchers and inspire further research related to the use of media in teaching pronunciation through YouTube applications. This research is expected to benefit English teachers in selecting appropriate media to enhance students' pronunciation skills.
