Since then, Foe/d has developed 11110 an important forum for graduate student research. This academic year l::iegan with the seventb annual FO(flsgradu:ne student conference, entiued "\'V'endepunkte." Keynote speaker Jo hn D avidson, Associate Professor o f German al Ohio State Umversiry, opened the conference with a paper on ',\Xr'endepunkle and German Film." Speakers joined us from Canada, Ge rmany, and the United States to present a wide n riery of papers dealing with visual art.s, literarure, language, and sociology. It was a pleasure to share ideas with srudcms fro m a variery of llnivc[siues and acadcnuc backgrounds. This year, Focus 011 Gerlllall Slut/ieI received Twenty-five submissions., making for an enjoyable review process and a difficult selection process. TIle articles in this volume reached us from Canada, Germany, (he United Kingdom, and the: United States. For the reader's o rienlacion, they are grouped in approximate chronological order. The fi rst nine articles expand the re:ader's understanding o f literature, philosophy, and film by analyzing works in their socio­ historical, linguistic, or economic contexts. Volume 10 begins with an examination of Goethe's lf7ilhd", Meisler! Lehljal;,-e through tbe lens of the market economy. In this article, Sean \,(/ilson analyses VIII how money governs not only the proDgonist's social status, but also his personal relarionships. emotions, and artistic motivations. In his close analysis of H6Iderlin's Empedolelu fragment, Joseph Suglia questions the notion of personal sacrifice that scholars have identified in the text. He argues that the fragment becomes a "rn.gedy oj tragedy," one that concerns the:: failure of tragedy (24). Sabine Sievern's contribution examines contrascing literary poruayals of women in the French Revolueon. Sievern's a~a lysis of Therese Huber's protagonist in Die Familie Seldoif and 1\brle von Ebner-Eschenbach's title character 10 Mane RtJltmd spans ge::nres and time frames. Carolin Durclinger explores the concept of the animal as developed in Horkheimer and Adorno's essay "Mensch und Tier." She argues mat me philosophers' engagement wim th~s conc~p[ extends to a " reth inking of the status and function of plulosoplucal discourse" (48). In her article, Enuly Sepp identifies resistance to the horrors of the Holocaust in the fantasy and play of c;:hilciren. Sepp examines this resisrance both in Ilse Aichinger's novel Die grolm HoJInllng and in historical reality. Two very different articles deal with works wanen in 1970s. Stefan H6ppner analyses the portrayal of Cuba in Hans Magnus Enzensberger's Der Ullltrgang der Ti/ani~. Through an examination of the POstcolonial gaze, he locates the work In a socio-hisrorical context be~en the 1\ lanUst idealism of the 1960s and the skepticism of the 1970s. MarieUe Sutherland investigates what she aptly terms the reader's "linguistic squinting" (123) in Peter Handke's Dit AngsJ des Tom/antIS beinl Eljmmr. By comparing the protagonist's response to language wull that of the reader, Sutherland demonstrates the perplexing, overpowering, and anxiety provoking effect that language has on both. Two further articles deal with works surrounding the IWende. Avi Kempinski examines the use of audio in Marcel OphuIs' films November Day! and Hotel TemJinJlJ. Kempinski focuses on the juxtaposition of popular and folk songs with image and monologue/dialogue to create what he terms a "theatrics of sound" (141). In her discussion of rhe de-poliricizaeon of lesbianism in Helga Konigsdorf 's novel Gkirh Neben Afrika, Diana Alberghini problematizes the relaoonship berween personal and political ix identities in the immediate post-liYende period. The selec tion of books reviewed includes an epistolary work (G laubert-Hesse), four autObiographical or semi-aulobiographic:a.1 works (Honigmann, Hugel-fo, larshalJ, Samson, Sombart), three novels (Horner, Kraufi, Sutcr), two schola rly works (Kessel, Schone), a reprint of an 180 1 text (Mar",olph), and a colJecuon of stories (\Veher). The interviews that appear in this volume focus on litcramre and writing, and touch on topics such as Germanness, culrure, language, lhe cities of Berlin and Istanbul, real and metapiloflcal bridges, and Turkish-German rclations.
