The volume now in the reader's hand ~s bUlh upon this Slack of journals represen ting a decade of ms volumes. (Once published semiannually, FoCIIS on Gtrmall Siudies has appeared annually since 2000.) One Thing jumps off the page in each editor's inu:oductions over the las! ten years: the vision on part o f each Focus edi tor to create a forum for scholarly work and exchange. Founded in 1993 by graduate students of the University of Cincinnati, Foclis was conceived in part as a response to the increasing emphasis being placed on candidates' publication records in tbe fidel of German Studies. Little has changed since tben in terms of the vision of thiS journal- or the field's expecl2uons of candidates; If anything, bolh have kept pace u.jlh one another. \X'e are pleased to enter our next decade continuing to sen'e as a forum for lhe exchange of ideas via graduale srudents' articles and book reviews, as well as interviews wah scholars in tile field. Since 1995, Focll$ on Cerlllon Siudies has o rga nized an annual graduate student conference. This year's conference began with Claudia Breger o f Indiana University delivering the keynote address "l\Ietaphors-t-,lemories-Mockcries: Border Talk in Recent Turkish· German Prose." This literary talk segued into other literary and interdiscip linary u:ear.ments of the conference's tOpIC "Crossing Borders, Cultures and Disciphnes." G raduate smdent speakers came from Euro pe, Canada and the Un ited Sl'3tes to present thelT investiga tions of such 'crossings' in the areas of literature, film, pedagogy, linguistics and SOCiology. The two·day conference was an enjoyable way to meet stuclems from diverse academic backgrounds and shan: in their research. Although FonlS does not publish confercnce proceedings, speakers are encouraged to submit their papers for consideration to each year's ,·ollime. FOOlS IS one of twO graduate srudem journals in German Srudies, and is highly competitive in ILS selection of scholarly texts. We received twemy·slX submissions (his rear from graduate stu{l.::ms in Canada, Germany, Ireland, England, F[ancc, viii Italy and the United States. All underwent a rigorous selection ptocess by graduate students and faculty referees on our board of reviewers, and in the end twelve articles were accepted. Thank you to our board of reviewers for their thoughtful and detailed critiques of this year's submissions. Articles in this year's volume begin in the 21" century and work bacb.-ward to the 18th century. Within this reverse chronological order, the reader will also notice: themes such as globalization, philosophy of history, the visual arts, and gender, among others. The journal begins with Christian Buss' examination of the: recent films Goodl!)'e unin Die kere lYlI"tte and the documentary Chronik der Wende as related [Q id~ntity and 'otherness.' Notably, he does nOt relate the first film to 'Ostalgie: but rather he argues that these visual texts' attempts m come [Q terms with how "the breakdown of entrenched borders leads [Q the instability of the traditional narrative of E ast vs. \Vest." Sonja Klocke's article, reworked from her original conference paper, examines the tropes of migration, political systems and language in E mine Sevgi Ozdamar's novel Mtttterzunge, and asserts that the wo rk challenges stereotypical roles fo r migrant women in a globalized society. Considering another group that has transgressed borders, Patrick Farges interviewed refugees from National Socialism who setded in Canada, and finds in their narratives (and nanative ruptures) the consrant negotiation of acculturation and identity. The next tWO articles draw on colonial and post-colonial theory. i\-iartin Widmann's contrib ution investigates Heiner i\lii!1er's representation of hisrory in his drama Dcr Auftragthrough the lens of post-colonial theory. In a related vein but in a visual context, Richard John Ascarate examines (he film .Metropo/iJ' colonialist fa ntasies. In his article, he focuses on contemporary visual influences on the film's images, as weU as their significance for his interpretacion of the robot-Maria scene as exemplary of \'{feimar discourse. Images make their debut in FomJ bodl as part of the Ascarate and Traser-Vas articles. The latter presents not images of Rodin's sculprure as one might expect, but radler paintings by Cezanne in her article, in order to illustrate Cezanne's epistemological and poerological influence on Rilke's Die Aufzeichnungen de.J Ala/Ie Laudds Bdgge. Ulrich Eschbom's piece deals with not with rhe metropolises of Lang's film or Rilke's Paris, but Berlin. He offers a close reading of texmal city images in Berlin Alexanderp/at~ revealing the protagonist'S experience o f the metropolis and the complex literary represcntation of the city. Ben Hutchinson reprises rhe Rilke theme, with his meticulous examination of the poet's use of the verb 'zitlern,' stating that " through the microcosm of [this) o ne verb we can see dle young poet asse rting his own individual aU l.hority on the conventional vocabulary of dlC day." The next article spans the 20,h century, while th e final dlree deal with works from dle 19'" and 18th centuries. In herdiscussion of works by Brecht, Dlirrenmatt, Frisch and Handke, Bine Schulz approaches lhe plays from the theoretical framework of disability smdies. She scrutinizes the plays' characters with disabilities, and re lates their dramatic portrayal to theater aesthetics. Katherine Wilford compares different versions of Wedekind's ':rv!onsuetragodie,' and by siruating them in their historical and cultural context, dleorizes the reasons for dle changes. The connection between aesthetics and edlics is Lhe target of D avid Wachter's study of r.,'lusil's Der /Iifalln ohne EigenIchaften. He considers how artistic production and {he aesthetic e.xperience of an open one to existential experiments with the self. Finally, Lanlan Xu's evaluation of Lessing's Mij/ Sara Sampson takes its cue from Foucaultian ideas about sel f-care and self development. She considers these dleories in relation to the female characters' development in the drama, drawing conclusions about Lessing's emancipatory capabilities. This year's book rcview section is The work of Julia Baker. It provides the reader reviews o f the latest German-language literature, including novels (Ri.nk, Diggelmann, Peters), short stories Ounge) and tales (Sacher-Masoch), essays (Loetsche[, Ransmayr, Sebald), biography (Cla ussen on Adorno) and autobiography (Rusch). Secondary literature on the topics of fa naticism (Berkewicz), Schnitzler (Foster and Krobb), Austrian literature (Haas, Schlosser, Zeyringer), prostitution OOSt), literary responses to unification ({
