Letter from the Immediate Past-President of 

Georgia TESOL

Dear GATESOL Members & Readers! 

As the Immediate Past-President of Georgia TESOL, I am very excited that the new 

online journal, GATESOL in Action, begins a new era for Georgia TESOL.  The work on this 

initiative begun under my presidency and has continued into Harvey Oaxaca’s presidency.  I 

want to thank our Co-Editors, Gertrude Tinker Sachs and Kendra Castelow, for all of their hard 

work over the past year in creating the journal and the systems for the peer review.  They have 

worked very hard to create a professional peer-reviewed journal which will only continue to get 

better as we work through small issues.  THIS Volume of the journal will be the last one done 

not using our new electronic publishing system.   What you see currently will be our final 

manually produced journal, and the best is yet to come!  Throughout the past year, the GATESOL 

in Action Committee looked into various platforms to use for publishing our online journal.  We 

also applied for and received our ISSN number through the Library of Congress.  This Library of 

Congress number lends credibility to our journal and will enable our authors to have their work 

seen through library systems around the world and a variety of academic search engines.

Much hard work goes into creating a Journal and the publishing is just the last step in the 

process.  Our Editors recruited not only authors for this volume, but they also screened and 

reviewed applications for our Peer Review Board.  They deserve thanks for the time and energy 

they gave to this project. 

I was honored to serve as Georgia TESOL’s President during 2012-2013.  As an all-

volunteer run organization, we have a TESOL affiliate to be proud of; therefore, thanks goes out 

to many of you for volunteering your time and talent!  Also, please consider sharing with your 

fellow teachers around the state by writing an article for an upcoming issue of GATESOL in 

Action.  The Call for Papers for the Spring 2015 Volume is out and on the website.  We are 

strong individually, but united by our love of teaching and our English language learners, we are 

great together!
