In Memoriam - Pamic.indd Jakob Pamić passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on March 5th, 2004. It was a great shock for all of us who had the privilege to be befriended by him, because Jakša, as he was known to friends, was active to the last minute, bursting with energy and full of future plans and unfinished projects; his desk was left full of papers, notes, manuscripts and unanswered e-mails. I freely confess, it was very difficult for me to speak coherently at his funeral. Even during the last two months or so he was particularly active: he was gathering around himself a group of younger col- laborators from the three principal geological institu- tions in Zagreb (which means, in Croatia; Faculty of Science, Faculty of Mining, Geology, and Petroleum Engineering, and Institute of Geology) and urged them to write articles; this was intended to be a series of papers published as a special issue of a renowned inter- national geological journal devoted to the Dinarides, which Jakša succeeded to obtain thanks to his good connections with foreign colleagues. This is not the appropriate place to enumerate one by one Jakša’s numerous scientific papers (see Bibliography below) nor to review in detail his many and important scientific achievements. They deserve to be reviewed and scrutinized for their own sake, which will be done by forthcoming generations of Croatian geologists. There will be no shortage of opportunity for that, as Jakša, with his most impressive opus of over 300 published scientific papers, many of them in renowned international journals, fixed an indelible seal on Croatian, and not only Croatian, geology. Let us remember just a few basic facts: Jakob Pamić was born in Požega, Slavonia (north Croatia) nearly 76 years ago, and in spite of the fact that he travelled extensively and worked both in various regions of the IN MEMORIAM former Yugoslavia and abroad (Iran), he never broke the connections with his native region and was always very fond of returning home. He obtained both his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in geology at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, and soon after obtaining his B.Sc. degree he went to Sarajevo, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he remained fully active for 30 years. First he was appoint- ed assistant at Sarajevo university, but soon moved to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Institute of Geology (in fact, a geological survey) where he served in various posts (chief of department, chief of sector, technical director – i.e. the scientific head) for the rest of his stay in Bosnia. What is, in this respect, particularly worth mentioning, is the fact that, during all that time, he permanently and regularly maintained close ties with his home university department, here in Zagreb, send- ing younger colleagues to graduate studies in Zagreb, showing them how to do geology and participating, as a member of the examination panel, in their M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses. Thus he greatly influenced Bosnian geology, directing it more towards the Zagreb geo- logical school. Summing up his activity in Sarajevo, it can be said that the geology in (and of) Bosnia and Herzegovina nowadays would be far below its present- day level, regardless of how high we regard that, with- out Jakob Pamić and his enthusiastic work. Jakša Pamić coauthored 11 sheets and correspond- ing explanatory notes of the Basic Geological Map 1:100,000 of the former Yugoslavia, which covered a large part of the sometimes impassable Bosnian terri- tory. We geologists are well aware of what it means to be the author or coauthor of 11 sheets of a 100,000 geological map. This refers particularly to the northern part of Bosnia, i.e., to the area known among geologists as the Inner (or Internal) Dinarides, characterized by a highly complex geological structure. He devoted par- Geologia Croatica 57/1 103–115 ZAGREB 2004 Dr. Sc. Jakob PAMIĆ 1928–2004 104 Geologia Croatica 57/1 105In Memoriam – Dr. Sc. Jakob Pamić ticular attention to the so-called ophiolite zone (which also intrigued Mijo Kišpatić, the originator and founder of Croatian petrography, whom Pamić also highly respected), to which he contributed several seminal contributions. His early papers already dealt with this topic, even before the advent of plate tectonics, and Pamić assumed the ultramafites originated in the deep- est part of the lithosphere or upper mantle, respectively, paying particular attention to the eclogitic-amphibolitic rocks. Therefore he was also elected a member of the editorial board of the journal “Ofioliti”. More recently, Jakša focused his attention on the north-western extension of the Vardar zone, i.e., its continuation from the eastern Dinarides through north Bosnia to northwestern Croatia, central Slovenia and the contact with the Alps. He interpreted it as a continu- ation of the Periadriatic lineament into the contact area between the Dinarides and the Tisia/Moesia. However, he also worked on numerous other geological problems: he studied Triassic, Late Cretaceous, Palaeogene, and Neogene magmatism of the Dinarides, and he was the first in Croatia to deal with isotope geochemistry (in collaboration with colleagues from the USA). In short, he was engaged in the investigation of numerous geological, petrological, and geochemical problems of almost all magmatic complexes, both in the Dinarides and the Pannonian Basin, also including the Variscan granitic and metamorphic complexes of our so-called insular mountains in Slavonia. To all these topics he always used the polythematic (or multidisciplinary) approach. In the meantime, he spent a year (1975/76) as a professor at the International University in Shiraz, Iran, where he taught petrology and isotope geochemistry. In 1981 he returned to Zagreb, as a senior scientist at the Institute of Geology, and, in addition to that, was invited to lecture, as a part-time professor, in the graduate study of geology at the Faculty of Science of Zagreb University, the course entitled “Magmatism and metamorphism of the orogenic belts”. In 1992 Jakša was elected a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, though, judging by his scientific achievements, he deserved to be elected a full member. Unfortunately, he didn’t live to see that mer- ited recognition. His retirement in 1995 did not weaken his scientific activity, neither in the domestic nor in the international field. Therefore it was more than deserved that he became, in 1999, the recipient of the state award for life achievement in natural sciences. This was the only official award he ever received. As previously mentioned, Jakša was author of more than 300 scientific papers, which were published in a wide array of international and domestic journals. About 60 of his papers were published in journals referred to in the Current Contents Database. In addi- tion, he was the author or coauthor of a dozen or so monographs, deliberately written in Croatian in order to be of maximum use for domestic geologists; for half of these monographs he was sole author. Therefore, he was not only the most productive, but also the most widely internationally cited Croatian geologist, (as supported by over 160 citations within the last ten years in the quotation index). It is obvious that he was an exceptionally industrious and hard-working person; but he also stimulated other people, i.e. those who knew how to appreciate his enthusiasm and profit from his broad knowledge. I can safely say that I know several younger colleagues whom Jakša helped to broaden their geological horizons and to view their particular geolog- ical problems seamlessly embedded in a broader, even global, geological framework. I am quite sure that these colleagues would confirm these words, if asked to. Some reproached him for writing too much. I myself sometimes criticized him for having written too profusely on a locally or regionally restricted topic. Jakša’s answer to such reproach was that geology was the only job he knew how to do; therefore he did it tire- lessly and with maximum enthusiasm. Many foreign colleagues recognized that and therefore, in addition to being chief investigator or collaborator on a number of domestic projects, he was often invited abroad to par- ticipate at various international scientific conferences and symposia, where he delivered a number of notable talks, most of which were subsequently published as papers in peer-reviewed journals. He was chief inves- tigator on five international projects, and a participant in two Croatian–USA collaborative projects some ten years ago. By incorporating his own geological per- ceptions into mainstream global geology, Jakša con- tributed, more than any other Croatian geologist of his (and younger) generation, to the recognition of Croatian geoscience in international, European and world-wide arenas. It is worth mentioning that as early as 1973, i.e. more than 30 years ago, Jakša wrote a review article – the first one to be published in the former Yugoslavia – on the factography and application of plate tectonics, and he consistently applied that new, geological para- digm in all his papers, just as he always placed his pet- rological work into a broader geological setting. Being a scientist, Jakša did not believe in life after death. Nevertheless, we may send him this last mes- sage: Dear Jakša, even if we do not always, and in every detail agree with some of your geological percep- tions, and even if we do not always and without reser- vation accept all of your geological interpretations, this is how it should be in geology, as well as in any other true science. However, you have erected to yourself an everlasting monument in both Croatian, and worldwide geology. We who had the privilege to be your friends during your life shall remember you forever, and your name and your opus will be the model and stimulus for generations of geologists to come. May you rest in peace in this earth as you so enthusiastically studied all your life! Ivan GUŠIĆ 104 Geologia Croatica 57/1 105In Memoriam – Dr. Sc.
