La publicación de la tercera edición de GiST es un logro significativo 
para el equipo de ÚNICA por el hecho de que una gran parte de la 
investigación es propia de la institución. La mayoría de los escritores (9 
de los 16 representados en 5 de los 9 artículos) están vinculados con la 
universidad. Cinco autoras son egresadas del Teacher Training Institute, 
dos lo son del programa de Licenciatura en Educación Bilingüe, uno es 
profesor en el pregrado y por último, la Dra. Noel es la decana académica 
de dicho programa. 

El gobierno colombiano concibe las universidades del país como 
espacios de investigación, enseñanza y proyección social. De acuerdo 
con esta visión, la actual edición de GiST hace patente que ÚNICA 
está haciendo academia: perfeccionando una pedagogía con base en la 
investigación para beneficio de la sociedad. 

A la vez que nuestra universidad se consolida en la investigación, 
quisiéramos también reconocer la gran importancia de los autores 
de los otros cuatro trabajos publicados en esta edición. El beneficio 
inmenso de poder conocer el trabajo de otras universidades permite que 
ÚNICA se autoevalúe y reflexione sobre su papel en el progreso de la 
educación bilingüe. Destaco además la labor de los pares académicos 
quienes realizaron una revisión y crítica experta dando grandes aportes, 
los cuales sirven de manera significativa a la revista y contribuyen al 
avance del ámbito.

La educación bilingüe efectiva es un factor clave para el futuro 
de nuestro mundo globalizado tal como ha sido en el pasado cuando 
naciones interactuaban de manera cercana (ese fue el caso en la época 
de los persas, griegos y de los imperios romano y británico). Aunque se 
puede argumentar que las culturas del mundo se han unido de maneras 
nunca vistas por las generaciones pasadas, esta aseveración requeriría 
abundante explicación histórica, y no es un tema que nos compete

The publication of the third edition of GiST is a significant 
achievement for the ÚNICA team due to the fact that a great part of 
the research is the institution’s own. The majority of the writers (9 of 
the 16 represented in 5 of the 9 articles) are part of the school. Five 
authors are graduates of the Teacher Training Institute, two are alumni 
of the undergraduate Teaching Degree in Bilingual Education, one is an 
undergraduate professor and finally, Dr. Noel who is the academic dean 
of that same program. 

The Colombian government conceives of the country’s universities 
as places for research, teaching and social outreach. In line with this 
vision, the current edition of GiST makes it clear that ÚNICA is putting 
education to work: perfecting a research-based teaching methodology  
for the good of society.

At the same time that our college is consolidating its research, we 
would like to also recognize the tremendous importance of the authors 
of the other four articles published in this edition. The immense benefit 
of being able to familiarize ourselves with the work being done at other 
universities allows for ÚNICA to do a self-evaluation and to reflect 
upon its role in the progress of bilingual education. I would also like 
to highlight the work of the peer reviewers who carried out an expert 
critique and review, sharing marvelous ideas, which greatly help both 
the journal and the progress of the field.

Effective bilingual education is a key factor in the future of our 
globalized world in much the same way that it has been in the past 
when nations have interacted closely (this was the case in the times of 
the Persians, the Greeks and the Roman and British empires). Although 
it could be argued that cultures have merged in ways never before 
experienced in former generations, such an assertion would require 
quite a bit of historical explanation, for which we have no space now. It

ahora. Sería más sencillo y concreto preguntarnos: ¿Hay evidencia de 
la internacionalización en nuestros colegios locales? Por ejemplo, ¿Ya 
están confrontados nuestros estudiantes con la necesidad de comunicarse 
interculturalmente? La respuesta, por supuesto, es que sí.

El bilingüismo se ha convertido en una necesidad tanto en el nivel 
local como en el nivel internacional porque lo local ya está altamente 
interconectado con lo internacional. Las habilidades comunicativas 
lingüísticas son más necesarias hoy que nunca. Por estas razones, la 
gran temática del actual volumen de GiST es el rol de la educación en 
la producción del bilingüismo en las esferas local y global. 

Las cuatro esferas de educación y bilingüismo que abordaremos 
incluyen: el nivel del aula, del colegio, de la ciudad y también el 
nacional/regional. Seguro que los primeros tres artículos serán de interés 
para profesores, pero mientras se avanza en la lectura, los artículos se 
volverán gradualmente más llamativos para administradores y creadores 
de política educativa. Esperamos que puedan encontrar tanto información 
como inspiración, y que éstas les sirvan para su propio desarrollo 
profesional. 

GiST tomo 3 es un llamado a los educadores para que comprendan 
e integren todos los planos de bilingüismo, del local al universal. Para 
aquellos que ya están trabajando en el nivel de la política internacional, no 
sería justo imaginar que su trabajo no involucra la comprensión de lo que 
está pasando en el nivel de la escuela local. De igual forma, mientras los 
maestros están ayudando a los niños y adolescentes a superar problemas 
locales, si promueven los estudios, la investigación publicada dará a 
conocer sus experiencias a otros colegas alrededor del mundo para que 
se beneficien de ellas.  

Los métodos pedagógicos que tienen bases en investigación 
funcionan. Aplicados, tienen el potencial para traer todo el mundo hasta 
el aula; pero tienen también poder para transformar el aula en un portal 
al mundo. La educación bilingüe une estudiantes locales con culturas 
globales, preparándolos para enfrentar su entorno internacional. Les 
presentamos GiST volumen 3 a nuestros lectores como un espacio de 
reflexión, con la expectativa de que sea una herramienta eficaz en mejorar 
los sistemas de educación del mundo actual.



may be simpler and more concrete to ask instead: Is there evidence of 
internationalization in our local schools? For example, are our students 
already confronted with the need to communicate inter-culturally? The 
answer, of course, is “yes.”

Bilingualism has become a need on the local as much as the 
international level because the local has become so highly interconnected 
with the international. Linguistic communication skills are more 
necessary than ever. Because of this, the great theme of this present 
volume of GiST is the role of education in producing bilingualism in 
both the local and global spheres. 

The four spheres of education and bilingualism we’ll look at include: 
the classroom, the school, the city and also the national/regional levels. 
The first three articles will surely be interesting for teachers, but as 
one progresses in the reading, the articles will become gradually more 
appropriate for administrators and policy makers. We hope that you will 
be able to find both the information and inspiration which will assist 
you in your own professional development.

GiST volume 3 is a call for educators to both comprehend and 
integrate all levels of bilingualism, from the local to the universal. For 
those who are already working on the level of international policy, it 
wouldn’t be right to imagine that their job does not involve understanding 
what’s happening on the local school level. Correspondingly, while 
classroom teachers are helping children and adolescents to overcome 
local problems, if they promote research projects, published research 
will bring their experiences to light so that colleagues around the world 
may benefit from them. 

Research-based teaching methods work. If they are applied, they 
have the potential to bring the whole world to the classroom; but they 
also have the power to transform the classroom into a doorway to the 
world. Bilingual education unites local students with global cultures, 
preparing them to face their international surroundings. We present 
volume 3 of GiST to our readership as a space for reflection, with the 
expectation that it will be an effective tool in improving the educational 
systems of today’s world.


