Notes on the Inscription at Teos in 
Honor of Antiochus III

I N the Turkish Historical Society's periodical which used to be 
called Anatolia Peter Herrmann, HAntiochos der Grosse und Teos," 
Anadolu (Anatolia) 9 (1965, offprint dated 1967) 29-160, has published 

with rich commentary and valuable discussion four blocks presenting 
one hundred sixty-eight lines from decrees in honor of Antiochus III 
and of his queen Laodice and nineteen lines of a royal letter from about 
200 B.C. Teos had just been declared sacred and inviolable and recipro­
cated with divine honors. It is an excellent editio princeps which solves 
most of the textual problems.

On Block II, p.37 lines 27-28, where Herrmann notes the absence 
of a verb in the space for four letters at the end of line 26 and three 
letters at the beginning of line 27, the infinitive is probably TTavIEtV, 

which fits the sense. One letter-space remained vacant because of the 
need to respect syllabic division.

On Block II, p.38 lines 51 and 52-53, read €K(K)OVc!JU:T£V for {E}KOVcPLOW 
and (.LET' aUcPaAEtl [as- for (.LETaucPaAdl [uas- respectively. Haplography 
occurs frequently, e.g. Block I, line 33 (€7T7}ylAaTo) , Block n, line 20 
(uv(.LOptwv) and line 24 (aAovs-), whereas it is hard to explain in any other 
way the intrusion of the epsilon of EKOY<I>I:LIN. At the beginning of line 
53 Herrmann has restored one letter too many as one may readily see 
from the photograph. The passage (lines 50-53) then reads:
