OBITUARY

PROF. IQTIDAR HUSAIN SIDDIQUI

We have received the sad news about the passing away of

Professor Iqtidar Husain Siddiqui, former Chairman of the
Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University on 28 November
2016 in Aligarh.

Dr. Siddiqui (1937-2016) was known for his devotion to and

encouragement of historical studies and research of medieval Indian
history. His own works such as Afghan Despotism in India
(Aligarh, 1969) has assumed the status of a classic. His studies on
AmÊr Khusrow, Al-BÊrËnÊ and Ibn BaÏÏËÏah were well received by

the academia. His other remarkable work Indo-Persian
Historiography upto the Thirteenth Century (Aligarh, 2010) and
its enlarged edition Indo-Persian Historiography upto the
Fourteenth Century (2014) continue to inspire younger scholars as

well as the senior ones. Even after retirement he continued to work
and was recently studying the life and contribution of ‘Abdur RaÍÊm
KhÉn-i KhÉnÉn.

He never neglected the need to promote scholarship in Urdu

language and one of his latest monographs on Sufism is in Urdu.
The academia, his colleagues and others miss him.
May Allah Almighty rest his soul in peace and provide solace

to his family members – Amen!
