hom-74	Lehmann, Philipp	Losing the Field: Franz Thorbecke and (Post-)Colonial Climatology in Germany	2017	14	.pdf	application/pdf	6139	197	38	Thorbecke’s field Franz Thorbecke was born in Heidelberg in 1875.7 He studied natural sciences at Göttingen, before transferring to the University of Heidelberg to work with Alfred Hettner, one of the foremost geographers of his time who was serving as the editor of the renowned Geographische Zeitschrift.8 After the completion of his studies, Thorbecke worked as an editorial assistant at Hettner’s journal and, in 1905, he took on a teaching position at a girls’ secondary school in Mannheim.
