IBN AL- HAITHAM J. FOR PURE & APPL. S CI VOL.23 (1) 2010 Description of A new Species Belong to the Genus Hemicypris Sars , 1903 (Crustacea/Ostracoda ) from Iraq H. Z. M. AL-Da’amy Departme nt of Biology ,College of Education,Unive rsity of Karbala’a Taxonomy of crustacean (Ostracoda) Abstract The p resent study introduces description of a new sp ecies of class Ostracoda genus Hemicypris Sars, 1903. External morphological char acters p articularly shap e, size and st ructure of left and right valves of carap ace and body appendages were discussed and illustrated. Locality and date of collection were given. Introduction M embers of the class Ostracoda are small tiny organisms , the majority are freshwater sp ecies in which the length of adults is ranging from 0.5-2.5 mm [1,9] . Usually, they are found in every aquatic habitates includin g marine and non-marine , while others appear as semi – terrest rial , but no sp ecies known to be terrest rial [10] . It was found that the occurrence of Ostracods is related to water nature, air temp erature and even water chemist ry [4,6,7,8] . The taxono my of freshwater Ostracods is based mainly on shap e and size of left and right carapace [12] . Sp ecies of the genus Hemicyp ris Sars 1903 are characterized by the followings: car apace relatively st out laterally , left valve of carapace is crenulated anteriorly and p osteriorly , right valve lar ger and ov erlapp ing the left one [10] . Material and Methods Sp ecimens were collected by using zoop lankton net during M ay , 2004, from different regions of Karbala'a governorate. They were preserved in vials contain 70% alcohol with few drop s of glycerol . For d issection , both right and left valves wer e removed carefully by using fine dissection needles and the ap p endages . The dissected body p arts were isolated from each other and mounted on microscopic sl ide with a drop of glycerine . T hey were drawn by usin g comp ound microscope with ocular micrometer. Key s for identification were used according to [3,5,10,11] . Results and Dissection Hemicypris irarkensis sp . nov. This sp ecies was firstly described to t he science . It s name was derived fro m the name of our country . Carapace:Fig.1 Oval, total length 0.65mm; light brown and hy aline. Out er surface is smooth and covered with regular ly distributed small hairs; its p osterior end is rounded, much bro ader in the middle and would become narrower gradually toward the anterior end whi ch is d istinctly p ointed. Right valve lar ger than left valve and ov erlapp ing the latter ventrally and anteriorly , the free mar gins of the two valves overlap to realize a tight closure . Eyes fused. IBN AL- HAITHAM J. FOR PURE & APPL. S CI VOL.23 (1) 2010 Right Valve:Fig.2 The right valve is larger and broader than the left one. App roximately oval app roximately, outer surface smooth and hairy . Posterior mar gin n arrowly rounded, Ant erior mar gin is broadly rounded with hair on two long mar gins. Adductor muscles scar f ive differently arran gements. Left val ve:Fig.3 App roximately oval, outer surface smooth and hairy. Ant erior margin is rounded mar e than the p osterior end with small p ustules and hair. Five adductor muscles scar variable arran gements. First Antenna:Fig.4 Eight segmented; first (Basal) segment p olygonal is bearing one long setae on its inner mar gin, second segment is the lar ger bear ing two lon g setae on bot h inner and outer margins, third segments to eighth are graduating in size toward the smallest terminal ( eight) se gment which bears long terminal setae . There are ten long p lumose natatory setae att ached to the segments five to eight. Se cond Ante nna:Fig.5 Five segments , terminal se gment subdivided . First segment (Basal) is elon gated and enlarged hummer –shap ed; Second se gment is enlar ged with l ine shap ed letter T ,bearin g on e long setae att ached to the lower narrow mar gin. Endopod comp osed two segments, the first bear two short sensory setae and lon g other setae, the end of the segment which is att ached to the second segment bears(5+1) ntatory setae well developed distinctly extendin g beyond the base of the terminal claws. Terminal se gment subdivided, last bearing 5 terminal unequal claws and two terminal equal setae, at the lower(inner)margin att ached with three setae. Exop od; reduced to small lobe bearing one very long seta and other small. Mandible:Fig.6 Basal se gment elongated, much broader in the middle and narrowing gradually toward the apex which bears two identical setae, its base would p rotrude to form short broad p rocess bears five sharp identical teeth and one terminal short seta . Palp consists of four segments, the first elongated and bear ing single seta on the outer margin and vibratory p lat which is consist of four long identical p lumose filaments and one short p lumose filament and all are att ached to t he basal segment of the mandibular p alp , second segment of the mandibular p alp is a small triangular with three long identical setae, third segment elon gated, its outer margin with single short setae in addition to four long identical seta , there are two group s of setae consist of three p lumose setae, setal group 1 is attached to the inner mar gin of the first mandibular p alp segment and setal group 2 is att ached to the inner mar gin of the third mandibular p alp segment, fourth segment is very small square like and its apex bears three identical setae. Maxilla:Fig.7 Two segmented, the v ibratory p late elongated and curved, its apex b ears 12 p lumose setae four of them are long identical whi le the others eight are short er, the base of the vibratory p late bears five equal setae, the basal segment short and swollen, its outer margin is much curved and bears two setae ending basally with three mast igatory p rocesses which contain short setae arran ged 3-3-5 r esp ectively, the maxillary p alp narrow and elongate endin g with six setae, with three long setae on the inner mar gin. First Thoracopod: Fig.8 Triangular in shap e ,the mast igatory p rocess is slightly elongated endin g with eight setae, the two on both sides are longer than the others which are equal in length, its outer margin bears one long setae, the mast igatory p rocess jointed p alp -like endopode endin g with three setae, two long setae and one short and vibratory p late bear five slightly equal plumose setae. S CI VOL.23 (1) 2010 Se cond Thoracopod: Fig.9 Five segmented , basal segment approximately square ,second segment bears in apex a single long seta and the inner margin contains few irregularly distributed small hairs, third and fourth segments bear a sin gle long setae ,fifth se gment is the smallest one triangu lar in shap e and bears a well develop ed ap ical claw and two short setae on its sides. Thi rd Thoracopo d:Fig.10 Three segmented. basal se gment elon gated and narrow forming right angle with the other two segments, there are two reversed long setae at the junction between the basal(first ) and second segments, the inner margin of the basal se gment bears sin gle p lumose seta . Second segment is slightly winding its apex which bears lon g sin gle seta, third segment more winding its apex which bears long lateral seta and other small swollen one . Uropod: Fig.11 Consist s of T-shap ed apical rod representing the apical half of the whol e urop od . The other basal half appears as an elongated p late much narrow in the middle , its free end bears four unidentical claws. Comparisi on notes : The new sp ecies is closely related to the sp ecies Hemicypris posterotruncata Sars,1903 ,but differ by the following notes: 1-Posterior margin narrowly rounded. 2-Surface smooth and hairy . 3-Adductor muscle scars five diff erently arrangements. 4-Second antenna,A2-endopod terminal segment is subdivided Mate rials Examined *1 Female Holoty p e *1 Female Al lotyp e *4 Females Paraty p e *Karbala’a _Ir aq Coll ,M ay.2004.(Leg.Hanan Zwair) Acknowledgme nts I would like to introduce my app reciation to Dr. Wajeeh Al- Jumaily / University of M arkab / Liby a and Dr. Richard M . forester University of Denver United States , for their favor in identification of sp ecies and to certify the new species .
