On the other hand, in this digital age, independence is needed for students. Students who only depend on the teacher in the class will be left behind and make slower progress in their learning achievement. Classroom time is limited, so learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and to learn independently beyond the classroom. This is called self-directed learning (SDL). This study aims at describing the students’ perception on Self- Directed Learning (SDL) in learning English by using Youtube Video. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative research. The participant of this study is third- semester students of the Informatics Management Program in Stekom University Semarang. The data were collected by using a questionnaire. The findings showed that most of the students enjoy in implementation of SDL in learning English but they still need tutor in their learning process. Keywords: Self- Directed Learning (SDL); Students’ Perception; YouTubes Video. Introduction In today’s era, education plays an important role in developing the quality of life in all countries. Students become the subject of the learning process, and education becomes a significant need for increasing and improving education in the 21st century (Susilawati et al., 2018). According to Slakhanova dkk (2016), students must be more productive, creative, and competent during the learning process. It means that they become no longer the audience who listens to the teacher, but rather the allocators who do active observation and acquire knowledge by themselves. In that case, the Indonesian government takes the lead by changing the learning method from conventional learning, which is called teacher-centered, to student-centered http://u.lipi.go.id/1457703302 Novita Kusumaning Tyas Students' Perception on Self-Directed Learning (SDL) in Learning English by Using Youtube Video 1308 learning or known as Self- Directed Learning (SDL) (Swandhana et al., 2016). Self-directed learning, known as SDL, is a critical issue that can help students develop the knowledge they need to succeed in learning. By the development of technology nowadays, it affects to the education itself. It means that there are lot of open access sources that can be accessed by the students to improve their knowledge. Song, L & Hill, J, 2007 stated that Self- Directed Learning (SDL) considers the students as observer their own learning process. SDL combine the self- management (management of context including the social setting, resources and action) with self-monitoring (the process of students observes, evaluate and arrange their own learning process). SDL recognizes the significant role of motivation in enhancing learner effort. Motivation drives students' decisions to participate (Corno, 1992). Self- Directed Learning shows a greater responsibility in learning process and observes themselves. Garrison (1997) stated that Self- Directed Learning as a central concept in the study and practice of adult learner with three dimensions; Self- Management, Self- Monitoring and Motivation. In school context, academic self- concept is a central concept of the successful of education, constituting a direct and indirect predictor of academic performance and with particularly strong influence on school adjustment (Tan & Yates 2007). According to Michelle & Bracken (1994) achievement effect on self-concept and academic-concept. Self- Directed Learning is a factor that make student independence in learning (Gharti, 2019). The learning independence is a students’ ability to understanding and effectively arranging their own learning process. Furthermore, become independence learner by having self-learning skills is important for the students in learning process. According to Khotimah et.al (2019) stated that the successful learner is progressively seen as an individual that capable to conceptualize knowledge from the world experiences directly instead of those who responds to the instruction well. H. Y. Vu and M. Shah (2016) stated that classroom is regarded main source in learning language but the reality, there are a lot of students that success mastering language independently. In this case, independence students refer to Sefl- Directed Learning (SDL). However, in Indonesia, there is a crucial problem that need to be solved. The students’ dependence to the teacher is that problem. It was explained that the effect of teacher centered classroom that happened in learning process in Indonesia has impact on the students’ creativity (K.S. Grover et.al, 2014). The educational system nowadays inseparable from the development of technology. Both students and teachers need to have skill in mastering technology especially for education. For example, internet technology nowadays has many materials in the term of teaching and learning especially in learning language. Youtube is one product of technology that can be source for learning language. The students can access YouTube every time and everywhere they want is one of the advantages of YouTube as learning sources. There are number of research that discussed about SDL. First, H. Y. Vu and M. IDEAS, Vol. 10, No. 2, December 2022 ISSN 2338-4778 (Print) ISSN 2548-4192 (Online) 1309 Shah (2016) that discussed about SDL on Vietnamese student in learning English focused on listening skills. The result of this study was the students were not ready yet in implemented SDL and they still needed their teachers to instruct them. Second, the study that conducted by Turan and Koc (2018) that discussed about the impact of SDL readiness on critical thinking and general self- efficacy of the students majoring in Physical Education and Sports. The result showed that SDL influence essential considering and common self-efficacy characteristics because it impacts other education perspectives. The third study conducted by F. Du (2013) that discussed about students’ perspective on dependence learning project at a community college. The result revealed that the utility of SDL towards the improvement of students’ knowledge, metacognitive skills and motivation. Based the description above, the researcher is interested to find out the students’ perception on Self- Directed Learning in learning English by Using Youtube Video. This study then attempts to investigate the students of Informatics Management program understand SDL. Therefore, students’ perception especially on how students’ deal with SDL strategy to improve their English especially by using Youtube Video are analyzed. Method This study used descriptive qualitative method to investigate the students’ perception of Self- Directed Learning (SDL) in learning English by using YouTube video. It was non- experimental research which used questionnaires and interviews to collect the data. After collected the data, the researcher analyzes it to find out the students’ perspective which became a valuable resource to understand the students’ perception toward SDL. The research was conducted at Stekom University Semarang. The data was taken from the third semester students of Informatics Management Program with total students were 30 students. The reason why the researcher chose the third semester student was because all the learning process in this class using online class especially using YouTube video that their lecturer made it special for their main resource. The labelled data taken from the students then were analyzed using SDL theory. Then those data were transformed into graphic to make the report more detail and clear. The questionnaire result was interpreted qualitatively in depth. Novita Kusumaning Tyas Students' Perception on Self-Directed Learning (SDL) in Learning English by Using Youtube Video 1310 Results The pie chart above showed the students’ view about the beneficial of using YouTube as SDL media in learning English. Almost all of the students’ both strongly agree and agree about this statement. There were 22,1% of the students strongly agree and 63,1 agree about it. Then, only few students who spent approximately 20 minutes to study English at home. It means that most of the students did not spend much time for studying because they only spent 20 minutes or less to study beyond the classroom period. Discussion Based on the data obtained through questionnaire most of the students enjoy learning English when the Self- Directed Learning is implemented in learning process especially by using YouTube Video as the source of their material. In this digital era, students more interested using technology than conventional method in learning process. In this case is YouTube as the product of technology that is used by the students in implemented SDL method in learning process. By using YouTube, they are directly on point then conventional method. By implemented SDL method in learning process, the student’s responsibility is the key of the successfulness of their learning process. They are free to set their schedule, when and where they have to learn. On the other hand, even though the students are enjoying in implemented SDL in their learning process, they still need the role of the teacher. Based on the questionnaire, there were 63% of all students stated that they still need their teacher in mastering the material. It means that the role of the teacher is needed in SDL method of learning process. Conclusion The implementation of SDL in learning English is needed in learning process. By the Self- Directed Learning, the responsibility of the students can be seen.
