Initially designed as an entertainment medium, TikTok has now shown significant potential in the field of education, particularly in enhancing speaking skills. Previous studies have highlighted various advantages and potential of TikTok in improving speaking skills, such as the study by Amalia & Naufal Nafi’ardina (2024), which found that TikTok usage at the elementary school level could increase students' learning motivation, despite some weaknesses that need to be addressed. Arochman & Hasani (2023) emphasized how duet practices on TikTok can improve university students' speaking skills through interactive collaboration. Agustina & Putra (2022) analyzed that TikTok-based learning models significantly enhance university students' interest in learning English. Additionally, TikTok has been shown to effectively improve higher education students' speaking and grammar skills through TikTok videos (Cagas, 2022). This study aims to fill the existing gap by investigating TikTok's potential as an innovative language learning tool. The research employs a literature review method with a comparative analysis approach to explore trends and findings from previous studies related to the use of TikTok in language learning, particularly in developing speaking skills. The results of the study show that TikTok has a positive impact on students' speaking skills, boosts their motivation to learn, and provides opportunities for students to practice speaking in a more relaxed and interactive environment. However, the use of TikTok in educational contexts also faces challenges, such as the potential for distractions from irrelevant content and limited access to technology, which could affect its effectiveness. Therefore, further research is needed to explore how TikTok can be more systematically integrated into formal curricula and address accessibility and digital literacy issues. http://u.lipi.go.id/1457703302 mailto:sendisuwantoro@gmail.com1 IDEAS, Vol. 12, No. 2, December 2024 ISSN 2338-4778 (Print) ISSN 2548-4192 (Online) 2725 Keywords: TikTok, speaking skills, storytelling, English language learning, Gen Z, digital education Introduction TikTok, a popular social media platform, has captured the attention of millions of users worldwide with its unique features such as short videos, creative filters, and collaborative capabilities through the duet function. Initially designed as a means of entertainment, TikTok has now demonstrated significant potential in the field of education, particularly in enhancing speaking skills. Previous studies have highlighted various advantages and potential of TikTok in improving speaking skills. (Amalia & Naufal Nafi’ardina, 2024) found that the use of TikTok at the elementary school level can increase learning motivation, despite some weaknesses that need to be addressed. (Arochman & Hasani, 2023) emphasized how duet practices on TikTok can improve university students' speaking skills through interactive collaboration. (Agustina & Putra, 2022) analyzed that TikTok-based learning models significantly enhance university students' interest in learning English. Additionally, (Cagas, 2022) demonstrated that using TikTok videos effectively improves the speaking and grammar skills of higher education students. In the context of students' perceptions, several studies, such as those conducted by (Farisca Adhani et al., 2023) and (Febliyansyah & Syafryadin, 2023) revealed that students perceive TikTok as an innovative medium for digital storytelling, serving as a tool for speaking practice. Meanwhile, research by (Dewi, 2023) and (Agustini, 2023) highlighted that TikTok's unique features, such as voice drama techniques and visual effects, can strengthen students' rhetoric and English pronunciation skills. However, research on TikTok's impact in the educational context remains limited. Although initial evidence supports its effectiveness, few studies specifically explore how TikTok can influence speaking skills. Therefore, this research aims to fill that gap by investigating TikTok's potential as an innovative language learning tool. This study specifically seeks to answer the question: how can TikTok improve users' speaking skills? The research is conducted through a literature review of existing studies, focusing on the analysis of relevant themes. A. TikTok in English Language Teaching Several studies have discussed how TikTok can be implemented in English language teaching at various educational levels. According to (Mandasari et al., 2022), TikTok can be used in distance learning to improve speaking skills among ESP (English for Specific Purposes) students. TikTok enables students to Sendi Suwantoro, Tintin Susilowati More Than Just Entertainment How Does TikTok Empower its User to Improve Their Speaking Skills 2726 independently practice their speaking skills through video-based activities, where they can engage in dialogues and English conversations in real-life contexts. (Titik Komariyah et al., 2022) emphasized the application of TikTok in teaching speaking skills in English Language Teaching (ELT). TikTok in the English classroom allows students to practice grammar and pronunciation through short videos, giving them more opportunities to speak and experiment with the language. (Ikhsanudin Ikhsanudin & Dwi Susanto Ali Purwoko, 2022) also showed that TikTok can be used in online project-based speaking activities, where students are challenged to create engaging English content that aligns with the learning topic. B. Students' Perceptions of TikTok Usage Many studies highlight the positive perceptions of students toward using TikTok in English language learning. (Manggo et al., 2022) found that students perceive TikTok as an engaging tool that helps them improve their English- speaking skills. Additionally, (Farisca Adhani et al., 2023) reported that students feel more confident and motivated to speak English through the use of TikTok. The platform also allows students to practice speaking in a more relaxed and non- intimidating environment compared to traditional classrooms. A study by (Hongsa et al., 2023) added that TikTok significantly enhances EFL students’ speaking skills. Students using TikTok in English language learning showed improvements in fluency and grammar mastery. TikTok also provides opportunities for students to communicate with native speakers and learn from authentic videos. C. TikTok's Impact on Grammar Mastery In addition to improving speaking skills, TikTok also helps students master English grammar. (Cagas, 2022) examined how TikTok videos can be used to improve students' speaking and grammar skills in higher education. TikTok videos, which often feature short dialogues and conversation scenarios, help students understand sentence structures and the correct use of grammar. This allows students to not only improve their speaking skills but also their overall grammar proficiency. D. Criticism and Negative Impacts of TikTok Although many studies emphasize the benefits of using TikTok in learning, some research also points out potential negative impacts of this platform. (Damayanti & Gemiharto, 2019) highlighted the negative effects of video-sharing apps like TikTok on children, particularly in terms of exposure to inappropriate IDEAS, Vol. 12, No. 2, December 2024 ISSN 2338-4778 (Print) ISSN 2548-4192 (Online) 2727 content. Additionally, (Malihah, 2019) discussed religious perspectives on TikTok and its potential negative influence on students' moral and social values. Therefore, it is essential for educators to ensure that the use of TikTok in education is controlled and properly monitored. From the literature reviewed, TikTok has been shown to be an effective tool for improving EFL students' speaking skills. The platform not only enhances students' motivation but also provides them with opportunities to practice speaking in a fun and interactive environment. However, educators must be cautious in managing TikTok usage to ensure that students stay focused on educational goals and are not distracted by irrelevant or inappropriate content. Method This study uses a literature review method with a comparative analysis approach. This method was chosen to explore trends and findings in previous research related to the use of TikTok in language learning, specifically in developing speaking skills. The literature review is considered an effective method because it allows the researcher to analyze various perspectives without the need for primary data. A total of six relevant academic journals were selected as samples, based on criteria such as the focus on the integration of TikTok in language learning and its relevance to improving speaking skills. The analysis process was conducted using qualitative coding techniques, where the main themes emerging from each journal were identified and then compared to generate more comprehensive insights related to the research topic. researchers to analyze the jurnal. Repetition and Reinforcement Through repeated storytelling practice. Finding The reviewed studies collectively support the effectiveness of TikTok as a tool for improving English speaking skills, particularly among students. The integration of TikTok into learning routines has been shown to facilitate engagement, enhance creativity, and promote collaboration, all of which contribute to language development. 1. TikTok's Impact on Speaking Abilities Several studies indicate that TikTok, when used intensively, can significantly improve speaking abilities. For instance, (Agustini, 2023) highlighted that first-semester students showed considerable improvement in their speaking skills through the regular use of TikTok in their learning routines. However, the focus on early-stage college students in this study limits the generalizability of the findings to older or more advanced learners. Future studies should examine the effectiveness of TikTok across different age groups and proficiency levels to better understand its universal applicability. 2. Duet Feature and Student Engagement (Tarigan, Ninta., 2022) explored the duet feature on TikTok, noting its ability to foster a collaborative learning environment. The duet feature encouraged students to engage in real-time communication, improving speaking fluency and motivation. Despite these benefits, only 25% of students were able to pronounce each word correctly, suggesting that while TikTok encourages participation, supplementary pronunciation-focused exercises may be necessary to address these issues. Additionally, the study did not explore how different age groups or proficiency levels might impact the effectiveness of this feature. 3. Storytelling Techniques and Community Building (Zaitun, Hadi, M. S., & Indriani, 2021) emphasized the value of storytelling techniques on TikTok, which allowed students to craft and share their IDEAS, Vol. 12, No. 2, December 2024 ISSN 2338-4778 (Print) ISSN 2548-4192 (Online) 2733 narratives. This approach not only enhanced speaking fluency but also promoted a sense of community among learners. However, this study was limited to a specific age group, which raises questions about the platform's effectiveness for younger or more diverse student populations. Further research is needed to investigate how TikTok’s storytelling techniques might benefit various demographic groups. 4. Digital Storytelling and Creative Expression The study by (Febliyansyah & Syafryadin, 2023) supported these findings, noting that TikTok’s digital storytelling features, such as filters and special effects, made speaking exercises more engaging and encouraged creative expression. These features allowed students to freely express their thoughts and emotions, which in turn enhanced their confidence in speaking. (Dewi, 2023) also pointed out that TikTok’s interactive platform, which includes direct feedback from peers and teachers, creates a dynamic learning environment that encourages accountability. This feedback loop plays a crucial role in enhancing language development and should be further explored in future studies. 5. Limitations and Recommendations Despite the promising findings, several limitations were identified across the reviewed studies. Most of the research focused on specific demographic groups, with limited attention given to the diverse age groups, proficiency levels, and regional contexts that may influence the effectiveness of TikTok. Additionally, few studies addressed practical challenges such as access to stable internet connections or familiarity with the platform, which can significantly impact the success of using TikTok as an educational tool. Future research should explore these technical barriers and their potential effects on learning outcomes. Discussion TikTok has emerged as a promising tool for developing English speaking skills, particularly among students. The reviewed studies show that TikTok can enhance student engagement, foster creativity, and build a sense of community in the learning process. However, its use in educational contexts still requires attention to technical limitations and challenges that may impact its effectiveness. 1. Integration of TikTok into Formal Learning TikTok has the potential to be integrated into formal education environments, although most research to date has focused on informal learning and extracurricular activities. TikTok offers a more dynamic learning experience compared to traditional methods, such as lectures or Sendi Suwantoro, Tintin Susilowati More Than Just Entertainment How Does TikTok Empower its User to Improve Their Speaking Skills 2734 textbook-based learning. For example, the duet feature, which allows students to collaborate directly, is valuable in enhancing contextual speaking skills (Tarigan, Ninta., 2022). Additionally, TikTok's filters and visual effects can make the learning process more engaging and reduce students' discomfort when speaking in front of the camera (Febliyansyah & Syafryadin, 2023). By leveraging these features more systematically, teachers or schools can enrich speaking lessons, although challenges related to supervision and potential distractions must still be addressed. 2. Comparison with Traditional Language Learning Methods TikTok, within the context of the studies reviewed, has proven to enhance speaking skills in a more creative and interactive way compared to traditional methods. In conventional learning, students often focus on more structured speaking practices, which leave little room for personal or creative expression. TikTok, on the other hand, allows students to create digital stories and speak in a freer, more informal context (Zaitun, Hadi, M. S., & Indriani, 2021). This aligns with the findings of (Dewi, 2023) which showed that TikTok supports more spontaneous speaking practice and boosts students' confidence. However, it is important to note that TikTok cannot fully replace traditional language learning methods. Students may still require formal instruction to master more complex and accurate language structures. 3. Limitations of the TikTok Platform in Learning Despite the many benefits, there are several challenges when using TikTok for educational purposes. One major issue is the potential for distractions caused by content unrelated to learning. TikTok is an entertainment-driven platform that contains many videos not related to educational objectives, which could divert students' attention away from their learning goals. Furthermore, there is a need for tighter supervision by educators to ensure that TikTok use remains focused on learning objectives. This could add an administrative burden for teachers and educational institutions (Agustini, 2023). Future research on how to manage these distractions and balance the entertaining aspects of the platform with educational goals would be highly beneficial. 4. Future Research Directions Future research should explore how TikTok can be used within formal curricula. While some studies show positive results in using TikTok to improve speaking skills (Febliyansyah & Syafryadin, 2023) and(Zaitun, Hadi, M. S., & Indriani, 2021), further studies need to investigate its impact on students with different learning styles. Is TikTok more effective for IDEAS, Vol. 12, No. 2, December 2024 ISSN 2338-4778 (Print) ISSN 2548-4192 (Online) 2735 students who learn visually compared to those with auditory or kinesthetic learning preferences? Additionally, research on how TikTok can be more systematically utilized within language subjects or in classes with clear objectives should be conducted. This is crucial for understanding the extent to which TikTok can be used in curriculum-based learning without compromising the quality of instruction. 5. Access and Digital Literacy Limitations One significant challenge in utilizing TikTok in the classroom is the limited access to devices and stable internet connections. In contexts where access to technology is still restricted, using TikTok as a learning tool may be less effective or even inaccessible for certain groups of students (Dewi, 2023) Future research should examine the technological access gap and how it affects the success of TikTok-based learning, as well as ways to overcome these barriers, such as providing devices or offering more intensive digital literacy training for both students and educators.. Conclusion TikTok holds great potential as an interactive and creative speaking learning tool. However, its success in educational contexts depends on how systematically the platform is integrated into the curriculum, along with the management of technical challenges and potential distractions. Further research exploring its impact on students with different learning styles and how the platform can be used within formal curricula would be highly beneficial. Moreover, it is crucial to address technical barriers and accessibility issues to ensure that all students can make optimal use of this platform. References Agustina, I., & Putra, S. (2022).
