One of the interesting novels For analyze the character's inner conflict is the novel Anything But Rain by Okke Rizka Septania . The main character, Wira, has been experiencing inner conflict since Fais his best friend died when they facing off in a taekwondo match . Fais's death triggered an inner conflict in Wira due to feelings of guilt. Guilt arises in Wira when something reminds him of an incident in his past. Usually, the short story begins at the climax point itself and as such playwrights often capture the reader's attention or audience in the opening scene with a representative incident, which is closely related to central situation or conflict. In Wicaksono (2017:133 -134), Wellek and Werren, have an opinion that the conflict is divided into two parts, namely u; (a) conflict external (conflict) physical), and (b) internal conflict (conflict inner). In analyzing conflict, one must consider whether the conflict occurs within the character, or with other characters or situations outside of the character. Literary psychology is closely related to Sigmund's psychoanalysis. Freud . Personality man according to Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis consists of on id, ego, and superego. The ego is a personality system that acts as an individual's director, located between the conscious and unconscious realms . Serves as a mediator who reconciles the demands of the superego's impulses and prohibitions . Ego is in the hands of two opposing forces and is maintained and obedient to the principle of reality . The superego is a personality system that contains values or rules of an evaluative nature, located partly in the conscious and partly in the unconscious, tasked with monitoring and preventing satisfaction. Id. The superego is the same as the conscience which recognizes good and bad values, so the superego does not consider reality because it does not grapple with realistic things . ID Following explained about conflict experienced figure main Nine months have passed, and the memories have yet to fade. Wira himself is certain they will not fade, as long as the rain falls . The tall, dark blue figure blocking Wira's vision makes him feel relieved that he doesn't have to stare at the rain for too long. (APSAH, 2016:10) above data quote depicts the inner conflict that exists within Wira that arises when it rains. The rain reminds Wira of an incident in his past. Nine months quite a long time though Hero No Can forget departure Faiz moment ambulance bring it go moment Rain As long as it rains, Wira will never be able to forget the events of his past. That's why Wira hates rain so much. Wira try avoid a feeling that really tortures him proven there is a feeling of relief when his view of the rain protected with figure tall. Id as structure very dominant personality Hero . Shadow of the past plays a big role in Wira's mind so that he is disturbed and finds it difficult to carry out his activities. But, without meaning to, his eyes caught the view outside the window again, where the rain was falling harder and harder, making the leaves no longer visible. Instantly, the sensation returned, punching him hard in the gut and his consciousness. (APSAH, 2016:11) IDEAS, Vol. 13, No. 2, December 2025 ISSN 2338-4778 (Print) ISSN 2548-4192 (Online) 7303 Wira looked out the window again, and it was indeed raining. This fact brought back memories of the past . When the rain fell, the sensations Wira had always felt returned. Wira couldn't avoid the rain because it was something humans couldn't predict when it would come or when it would stop. So, whether he liked it or not, Wira had to face it. Therefore, Wira's id didn't contain any element of pleasure, but rather something unconsciously emerged when the rain fell. The earthy scent of the rainwater rose and invaded his nostrils, making it difficult to breathe. Wira used to love this scent, but not anymore. (APSAH, 2016:14) The scent of earth is part of a series of internal conflicts Wira experiences. Wira cannot close himself off from this reality. Wira may have once loved the scent of earth, but not now. After the earth absorbs rainwater, Wira will experience the same sensation when it rains. Although the ego is now within Wira, where he no longer likes the smell of the earth that has absorbed rainwater in an attempt to forget his past and aim to move on with his life, the id was also present when Wira still really liked the smell of earth. So the ego plays a more important role than the id. Wira pulled at his hair to try to clear the painful flash from his head . But to no avail. So, he forced himself to his feet, intending to find some pain relief in the kitchen. (APSAH, 2016:32) Wira felt an inner conflict with himself again. He tried to erase the painful flashes in his mind. The painful flashes appeared as a result of the incident where Wira helped Kayla from the thugs. The image kept flashing in his mind, forcing Wira to keep thinking about it . Wira couldn't avoid it, the flashes appeared suddenly, giving Wira a headache. The Id appeared suddenly, forcing Wira to think about what he didn't want to think about. Wira was still lost in his memories of Nadine when he felt pain in his ribs. (APSAH, 2016:73) Wira is once again lost in his memories of the past. Wira still clearly feels the pain he and Nadine felt over the departure of their best friend, Faiz . Id encourages him to recall the memories that have caused him such long-term trauma. However, Wira cannot simply bury his memories. He only tries to live with the shadow of his past . Wira was stunned . He had been called a murderer before, but never a fugitive, which was new to him. Although Wira knew Kayla was only joking, the girl laughed at her own joke right after she said it, the words sinking deeply into his heart. (APSAH, 2016:88) Berthin Simega, Milka, Sugino Paundanan Review Psychoanalysis: Dimensions Personality Any Novel Characters Other Than Rain Through Analysis Conflict Inner The main character 7304 Wira's reason for isolating himself from interacting with new people is because he doesn't want them to make him even worse because of the events in his past. However, Kayla's presence, who said that Wira was a fugitive, was something new for Wira. In the past and now, Wira had indeed been called a murderer. Although Wira knew Kayla was only joking with the word, the word caused Wira to experience internal conflict. id made Wira think about no longer getting to know new people to avoid unwanted consequences for Wira. id encouraged Hero For avoid all something that makes it No comfortable, good with environment place He interact and with man. Wira was about to sink back into his dark thoughts when a gust of wind suddenly blew from behind, bringing the scent of his own alma mater jacket to his senses. Wira was reminded of Kayla and Sarang . (APSAH, 2016:92) Wira returns to daydreaming, lost in thought. The id encourages Wira to think about his past. However, the ego appears, reminding Wira of Kayla and her cat, Sarang, breaking his reverie . Therefore, the ego can control the id. He opened the door to the nest, mentally preparing to replace the newspaper bedding with a new one. However, even though his hands were working, his brain couldn't focus. (APSAH, 2016:107) Id seemed to be making Wira's mind go haywire. Wira was uneasy in that situation. Even though there was a nest (cat) that could attract his attention, it wasn't enough . Even though Wira's hands were working to clean Sarang's cage, Wira still couldn't focus. The reason Wira couldn't focus was because he was in a place he tried to avoid and buried deep. Everything related to taekwondo, Wira always tried to avoid it. Id forced Wira to forget everything, including Wira's past. Wira himself was simply stunned. His gaze was blank. His heart pounded loudly in his chest, making his entire body tremble . A sensation he hadn't felt in a long time began to creep up from his toes to his head. (APSAH, 2016:116) Wira's gaze indicates that he is burdened by various thoughts. These include past events and present ones. The inner conflict Wira feels is a manifestation of the id, which haunts him and resurfaces repeatedly without any specific timeframe. When this inner conflict arises, Wira experiences the same sensation he feels every time it rains. This id, which emerges unconsciously, is a coercive and painful id . Kayla emerged from the front passenger door, followed by Attar, whose aura was already blazing from afar. Wira took a deep breath to calm himself, trying his best to avoid causing any IDEAS, Vol. 13, No. 2, December 2025 ISSN 2338-4778 (Print) ISSN 2548-4192 (Online) 7305 more trouble with her. After Kayla explained that the nest would not be entrusted to him, Attar began to pay even more attention to Wira. During sparring sessions , Attar repeatedly offered to be his opponent and always kicked him hard. (APSAH, 2016:186) The emergence of inner conflict felt by the main character above, namely starting from the appearance of Attar behind Kayla as described in the quote above. Attar really dislikes Wira because Attar thinks that Wira's presence in Kayla's life makes Attar's relationship with Kayla increasingly strained, plus Kayla's decision not to entrust Sarang to Attar and choose to entrust it to Wira makes Attar hate Wira even more. However, Wira does not want to cause any more problems with Attar. So it is clear that the superego personality aspect in the main character is more powerful than the id. Wira's tears flowed again. He regretted having misunderstood Faiz. ( APSAH, 2016:271) Crying is one way Wira expresses his emotions. By crying, Wira feels relieved. The id that had been embedded in Wira regarding Faiz was something wrong. All this time, Wira kept telling himself that Faiz was angry with him because Wira and Nadine went to the cinema without Faiz. This became Wira's excuse that Faiz did not accept Wira's closeness with Nadine. So, during the match, Faiz could not concentrate and ultimately died during the match. However, all of these thoughts were wrong thoughts in Wira. Faiz died of a sudden heart attack. The image of Kayla in the rain earlier danced in his mind , alternating with Nadine in the rain that day. (APSAH, 2016:197) id aspect is once again more dominant in Wira, with Kayla's image in the rain constantly lingering in his mind. The id controls Wira's subconscious, causing him to constantly think about something that shook his past. Nadine, who was chasing the ambulance with Wira in the rain and now appears in Kayla's image, further immerses Wira in his thoughts. b. Ego The following is an excerpt from the inner conflict between humans, namely the main character in the novel Anything But Rain by Okky Rizka Septania : His gaze was fixed straight ahead , toward Faiz, who was still wearing his trademark smile. Trying not to be provoked by that smile , Wira began jumping up and down, then shouting to release his tension before the match began. (APSAH, 2016:3) Berthin Simega, Milka, Sugino Paundanan Review Psychoanalysis: Dimensions Personality Any Novel Characters Other Than Rain Through Analysis Conflict Inner The main character 7306 Based on the quote above, the main character tries not to be influenced by his opponent's attitude so that Wira remains calm by relaxing. His body remains under control. Wira's inner conflict involves tension, but he is able to overcome it. Therefore, within Wira, the ego plays a more important role in controlling the Id. Eventually, everything scared him . Wira withdrew from everything, including Nadine and taekwondo , and busied himself studying in his locked room. (APSAH, 2016:18) The fear that arose within Wira was part of his ego. Wira consciously chose to withdraw from everything that related to his friend Faiz, including Nadine and taekwondo, which were part of Wira's inner self. Wira preferred to busy himself studying in his locked room. However, without realizing it, his superego emerged within Wira to focus on his studies in college. Wira didn't answer , not only because he was avoiding the confused stares of the students, but also because Kayla's words made his stomach rise into his throat . So throughout the journey, Wira remained silent, trying to hold back the memories that were about to emerge. (APSAH, 2016:47) Kayla reminded Wira of his past, related to his life in the world of taekwondo . Kayla's words made Wira experience an inner conflict within himself, Wira chose to remain silent during the trip, he did not want Kayla to remind him of his life any further. Wira tried to keep his past life, or the world of taekwondo, tightly closed. This condition was consciously done by Wira, therefore ego played a role in Wira, consciously avoiding Kayla from digging deeper into Wira's old life. Suddenly, Wira was overcome with an overwhelming sense of longing . He missed the person who knew him best, the person who was always there in every fragment of his memory. The person he was forced to drown with those memories. (APSAH, 2016:75) The inner conflict experienced by Wira based on the data above is the longing for a very important figure in his life, a figure who accompanied him during his childhood. However, in the end, they had to choose their respective paths because of an incident that made them drown in their respective sorrows. Wira failed to comfort himself, as did his best friend Nadine. Nadine is one of the people who can understand Wira, understand every aspect of Wira. So Wira cannot lie to himself that he really misses Nadine. Wira's ego is more dominant because everything that arises from his inner conflict is something he consciously does. IDEAS, Vol. 13, No. 2, December 2025 ISSN 2338-4778 (Print) ISSN 2548-4192 (Online) 7307 Wira sighed heavily . The fact that Nadine was back practicing taekwondo and even competing had kept him awake all night . He wondered about her reasons. (APSAH, 2016:101) The fact that Nadine has returned to taekwondo training has made Wira unable to sleep. Wira experiences an inner conflict thinking about why Nadine has returned to taekwondo training. Whereas after Faiz's departure, Wira and Nadine promised to leave the world of taekwondo. But now Nadine has returned to training. Wira wonders if the girl is able to console himself. Ego shows that Wira is trying to think about why Nadine has returned to the world of taekwondo . Wira does not want to think negatively about Nadine, even Wira assumes that Nadine can move on with her life without Faiz. Wira looked at Kayla gloomily, before turning his gaze back towards the pool . He regretted lying to Kayla all this time , but the girl shouldn't have known anything. (APSAH, 2016:115) Gloom is a state a person sometimes experiences when something is bothering them. Wira feels gloomy as he looks at Kayla. The personality traits highlighted by the main character in the data above are ego. Ego realizes that what Wira has done is wrong. Wira realizes that his actions in lying to Kayla are unjustifiable from any perspective. Wira himself closed his eyes for a moment, hoping he'd been right in telling this girl. After learning the truth, she'd probably criticize him like everyone else, but that would also make him give up on inviting her to join the club. (APSAH, 2016:116) The inner conflict experienced by the main character again, as seen in the data above, is doubt about his decision to tell Kayla about his past. Wira himself feels a dilemma about his decision. The ego always expects the right decision and action. The ego works by considering what will happen after making a decision. The good and bad of an action are important to the ego. Now Wira is wracked with feelings of guilt . The feeling of guilt was much stronger than when he kicked Fais before. (APSAH, 2016:228) Guilt is an inner conflict within him. Wira feels guilty for still being able to compete in taekwondo, while Wira cannot. Wira blames himself for what happened. Ego feels that what Wira has done is a feeling that arises when remembering events in his past. Wira was looking at her sympathetically when he accidentally glanced at a puddle of water on the asphalt road that was creating longitudinal waves. Wira's heart skipped a beat when he realized it was the raindrops that had caused it. (APSAH, 2016:29) Berthin Simega, Milka, Sugino Paundanan Review Psychoanalysis: Dimensions Personality Any Novel Characters Other Than Rain Through Analysis Conflict Inner The main character 7308 Based on the data above The inner conflict Wira experienced was already categorized as trauma. Just by looking at the puddles on the asphalt, Wira felt the sensation he felt every time it rained. Wira's heart felt like it stopped beating because of deep fear.
