Retreat from high temperatures observed in 20 caged animals over a period of two months indicates that they avoid exposure to body temperatures of more than 41° C. Nevertheless, lizards under apparently ideal conditions were recorded with temperatures of 42° C. immediately after they were shot, and on six occasions lizards captured alive had tem- peratures of 43° C.
