Critically endangered Ctenosaura melanosterna is known only from the Rio Aguan Valley in northern Honduras and Cayos Cochinos off the
Caribbean coast of Honduras. Extent of occurrence and area of occupancy are both estimated at less than 100 km2. The total population size is
not known, but is thought to be fewer than 2,500 mature individuals. The population is severely fragmented, with an estimated 10–15 isolated
subpopulations. Main threats to the species are habitat loss and collecting for the international pet trade. A future population decline of at least
30% is probable if current rates of habitat loss continue.
