• The Prairie Chicken in Illinois by Yeatter, Ralph E. (2019) - Although there can be little doubt that Illinois prairie chickens inhabited cleared woodland soils to a considerable extent during the period of crude agriculture, these birds are at present confined almost entirely to prairie soils. • Changes in the Small Bottom Fauna of Peoria Lake, 1920-1922 by Richardson, Robert (1925) - The west littoral of the lower lake receives the discharge from most of the main sewers and industrial drains of a city of nearly 100,000 people, but although this is true, during the summer season 366 the prevailing direction of the winds and the current together seem to keep this soiHng material largely confined between the channel and the bank as far as the foot of the lake, where the first extensive mix- ing of lake water and local sewage appears ordinarily to take place. Erpobdella punctata was found only in the mixture of local sewage and lake water at the P. P. U. Bridge, below the foot of the lake, that and the occurrence in mid-channel at Chillicothe being the only records obtained anywhere in the summer of 1922. • The Orchard Birds of an Illinois Summer by Forbes, Stephen; Gross, Alfred (1921) - The distances traveled on all these several journeys were 7.8 miles through farm orchards and 129 miles through commercial orchards, and in both cases all the birds on a strip sixty feet wide were deter- mined and counted. Orchards were much less numerous, especially in northern Illinois, than in the southern part of the state, the area of farm orchards covered aggregating only 3.69 acres for the northern and 14.14 for the central part of the state, the former .07 of 1 per cent, and the latter .3 of 1 per cent, of the whole area on which the birds were determined and counted. • Some Recent Changes in Illinois River Biology by Forbes, Stephen; Richardons, Robert (1919) - After calling attention to the fact that the fishery of the Illinois River is more valuable than that of any other fresh-water river fishery in the United States, and is exceeded only by the Great Lakes and the salmon industry of the Pacific coast, and that, owing mainly to reclamation oper- ations, the yield of the river has lately been reduced to about a third that previously reported, they say : It would seem, however, that there is prospect of a good profit by intelligent fish culture in the ponds and water courses remaining within the levee districts, provided that the industry is carried on as an adjunct to farming in much the same way that poultry is ordinarily raised upon the farm. Such conditions occurred in their earlier f^hases between Lockport and Morris before 1900 at low water; but in 1911 not until somewhere between Marseilles and Spring Valley ; while optimum conditions for green plankton apparently occurred at or above LaSalle before 1900, but in 1911 not much if any above Chillicothe, and in 1918 not much above Peoria. (1908) - Confined principally to the low water of mid- summer, appearing when the water reaches a temperature of 70°, and reaching its maximum development in temperatures above this point, declining at once to small numbers (less than 1,000) when the temperature falls below 60°, but lingering till the water approaches the freezing point late in November. Thirty-three forms of ChlorophycecB were recorded, and closer inspection of the collections will undoubtedly yield a considerable additional number either of closely related, and therefore included, species, or of those which occur but occasionally or in small numbers in the plankton. • Studies of the food of Fresh Water Fishes by Forbes, Stephen A. (1888) - My specimens of this species available for a study of their food were only five in number, obtained at South Chicago in small fish ; and a third, five inches in length, had eaten a young cen- trarchid. The large ratio of insect food (about forty-two per cent.) was more than half Chironomus larvae, most of the remainder being Hexagenia larvae, taken, however, by only one of the specimens.
