SYMPOSIUM

A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS

Every year, Indiana Law Review has the privilege of composing and hosting
a Symposium at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
Each annual Symposium is designated a different topic that relates to the law.
Knowledgeable legal scholars, professionals, and the like are asked to speak at
the Symposium to give insight on their expertise. Selected speakers are then
asked to submit an article on the topic to the Indiana Law Review, with the
potential to be published in the following year’s publication.

The announcement of the 2020 Symposium topic—Reentry: A Holistic
Approach to Combat ‘The New Civil Death’—caught the attention of many, and
was expected to be the most widely-attended Symposium hosted by Indiana Law
Review. Individuals from a variety of backgrounds, both legal and non-legal, were
invited to speak on this important topic. However, the COVID-19 pandemic
abruptly compelled a shutdown of most of the world, just weeks before the
scheduled annual Indiana Law Review Symposium. After months of hard work
preparing and planning, the Executive Board was forced to cancel the event.

In lieu of the Symposium, the Board asked selected speakers to submit an
Article or speech that reflects what they would have spoken about during the
Symposium, to be published in Volume 54. We are elated to publish this
Symposium issue, and thank each individual who has patiently awaited this
highly anticipated publication.
