three papers, by Michael Schmidt, 
S. Morris Engel and Gary Jason, and 
Michael Schmidt's bibliography in 
this issue are about fallacies is a matter 
of happy happenstance, not design . 
E .P . Brandon ' s paper on ellipsis is 
therefore as much at home here as the 

others. 
We draw your attention to Schmidt's 

excellent bibliography and to his re-
quest for information about items he 
has overlooked . Is one of your favorites

IN MEMORIAM 

It is with great sadness that the editors have learned of the 
death of Professor Merrill Hintikka on January 1, 1987, after a 
short illness . Her vitality, wit and good judgement will all be 
sorely missed by those who had the privilege of knowing her . 
We are grateful for the support she gave to informal logic by 
serving on the editorial board of this journal. 

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her husband, Pro-
fessor J aakko Hi nti kka.
