Research Note Establishment of a Committee for Norwegian Stratigraphy At a meeting of the Norwegian Council of Geology (Norsk geologirAd) on 5 May 1982, a resolution was passed for the establishment of a Committee for Norwegian Stratigraphy - Norsk Stratigrafisk Komite (NSK) - which will operate under the Council’s auspices and ultimate control. At a statutory general meeting of the committee on 5 January 1983, Anna Siedlecka, Geological Survey of Norway, was voted in as chair- woman with Tore Torske (University of T r o m s ~ ) as vice- chairman. Status The Committee for Norwegian Stratigraphy is a select com- mittee under the control of the Norwegian Council of Geology. In certain cases. decisions taken by the Committee can be forwarded to the Norwegian Council of Geology for their ruling. Mandates The Committee for Norwegian Stratigraphy has been author- ized to carry out the following tasks: 1. To draw up and present a guide to stratigraphical procedure and nomenclature in Norway. 2. To give approval to existing and new terminology in Nor- wegian stratigraphy. 3. To establish and maintain a computer-based archive of terms and names used, including those judged as invalid. This applies to stratigraphic units in use on the Norwegian main- land, in Arctic and Antarctic land areas under Norwegian jurisdiction, and on the related continental shelves. 4. To produce and continually up-date a stratigraphic glossary for the areas mentioned under point 3. The glossary will contain an inventory of (a) all types of stratigraphic units (including those for biostratigraphy. chronostratigraphy, lith- ostratigraphy, lithodemy, morphostratigraphy, and tecto- nostratigraphy as well as major tectonic structures); (b) tables showing correlative stratigraphic units both within Norway and in other, neighbouring countries. 5 . To maintain a continual control of, and provide advice on, the introduction of all new stratigraphical unit names and terms. Composition and working routine The Norwegian Council of Geology has appointed the members and deputy members for a four-year period, with the possibility of re-election for a further four-year period. The appointed members of the Committee for Norwegian Stratigraphy were chosen such as to provide the most comprehensive coverage of all types and ages of stratigraphy (Precambrian to Recent) within the land and shelf areas mentioned under point 3. The Committee will deliver an annual report to the Nor- wegian Council of Geology on its activities and future plans. In addition, at least once a year it will make known, possibly through publication, all the approved, new, stratigraphical unit names. The Committee’s secretariat and computer archive are based at the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), Trondheim. Advice to authors Authors intending to introduce new names and units or redefine pre-existing names and units in manuscripts prepared for pub- lication arc encouraged to submit the proposed nomenclature to the Committee for Norwegian Stratigraphy for its ruling. Authors will be requested to provide details of each unit on forms specially devised for this purpose. These forms can be obtained from the Committee’s secretariat: Norsk Stratigrafsk Komitk, Norges geologbke unders(kelse, P.O. Box 3006, N-7001 Trondheim, Norway.
