Editorial With this issue, Polar Research has gone over to a double-column layout more in line with today’s international publication standards. Basic edi- torial policy remains unchanged. The expansion of the scientific information sys- tem has resulted in the introduction of new tech- niques of information transmission. Readers need to obtain and identify published material as quickly as possible. Therefore, all abstracts in Polar Research include full bibliographic identi- fication. A page biblid will be added at a later stage to facilitate identification of photocopied single pages from an article. Such page identifi- cation has proved to be of more value to the users of a journal than the conventional running head. The present issue of Polar Research begins Vol. 1, No. 1 of a New Series. This is in accordance with the general lines of international reference and abstracting services and ensures that research published in previous and future issues is readily obtainable. As well as containing complete source and citation details, title pages have the Norsk Polarinstitutt logotype providing instant identi- fication of coverless offprints.
